China’s unprecedented economic and social transformation in the latter part of the 20th century has been picked over in dozens of movies by filmmakers ranging from Jia Zhangke and Zhang Yimou to Wang Xiaoshuai. Sophomore filmmaker Huo Meng trains his eye on one of those stories in his second film, “The Wind Is Unstoppable,” which he is just finishing off.
Huo burst onto the indie scene in 2018 with his debut feature, “Crossing the Border — Zhaoguan,” which travelled to the Pingyao and Berlin festivals and the Golden Rooster Awards. He will present ”The Wind Is Unstoppable” as a work-in-progress at the Hong Kong — Asia Film Financing Forum.

Fade up on a mountain of rocks in a quarry — raw material for construction, for literal nation-building, yet mining also destabilizes the land. The shot tracks along, as we hear a distant rumble – is it a storm on the horizon, far-off construction, or something more ominous? The camera comes to rest on an empty frame. The protagonist, Lim Cheng Soon (Peter Yu) and his brother Cheng Boon (Johnson Choo) rise from below, where they've been digging for rocks, up into frame.
An opening that encapsulates a film where everything important is operating under the surface, a film that needs one to excavate it for a meaningful experience. Hemingway-esque in its sparseness but also in its hidden richness and depth, much like the films of Edward Yang. We think we know what's going to happen, because we're familiar with the tropes. Of course Sza’s Sos was the album I played the most in 2023 — but remember, it came out in December 2022 and I ranked it second on last year’s list of top albums, obviously under Beyoncé’s Renaissance.
Though Sza owned the year, several great albums showed up in 2023. Here are the projects that lived rent free in my home and in my headphones.
1. Victoria Monét, Jaguar II
It’s a beautiful thing when someone working to help others achieve their dreams steps into the limelight. With Jaguar II, that’s Victoria Monét. The songwriter behind hits for Ariana Grande and others has been releasing incredible music for years — check out 2018’s Life After Love, Pt. 2 and 2020’s Jaguar if you’re just arriving at her fan club — but she’s finally at the forefront, and her major label debut album is a masterpiece. She’s bold and bombastic on “On My Mama,...

Say what you want about 1960s classic rockers, they usually spoke their minds about their contemporaries. Paul Simon called a Paul McCartney song “garbage.” He said the mindset behind the song and a political song from John Lennon offended him. The former track was banned by the BBC for being too controversial.
Paul Simon dismissed a Paul McCartney song that promotes Irish republicanism
One of Wings’ most controversial songs was “Give Ireland Back to the Irish.” It promoted Irish republicanism — the belief that Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland should be one nation with no ties to the British monarchy. During a 1972 interview with Rolling Stone, Simon dismissed the tune. “‘Give Ireland Back to the Irish’ — that’s garbage,” he said. “I don’t say that someone can’t write a social song, or even a song that’s a political song, and have it work, as a song and as a political statement.

Controversial Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy doesn’t like what he’s seen about how the journalism sausage is made.
Portnoy is hosting a “One Bite Pizza Festival” in Brooklyn, N.Y. today. Before the festival, Washington Post reporter Emily Heil reached out to the festival’s sponsors to see whether they had any comment on Portnoy’s association with the event.
A screenshot Portnoy published on the Barstool website quotes the email: “We are planning to write about the festival and how some of the sponsors and participants have drawn criticism by seeming to associate themselves with Dave Portnoy, who has a history of misogynistic comments and other problematic behavior.”
Portnoy confronted Heil in a phone call he taped and posted on social media. The video was headlined, “I Caught Wind That The Washington Post Was Writing A Hit Piece About Me And My Pizzafest So I Did What I Do.

Lionel Richie is apologizing for having to cancel a sold-out show at Madison Square Garden.
The “Hello” singer took the stage on Monday at the massive New York City venue — for the postponed concert that was supposed to be held on Saturday — and explained why he had been forced to cancel the previously scheduled show.

There isn’t anything anyone could say to Victoria Monét that would knock the confidence that functions as the driving force behind her latest single, “On My Mama.” The record, which will appear on her debut album Jaguar II when it arrives on Aug. 25, opens with a declaration: “When they say, “She get it from her mama” / I’ma say, “You fuckin’ right” / Body rude, it’s unpolite / Done bein’ the humble type.” In the newly released “On My Mama” video,” directed by Child., Monét leans fully into those affirmations.

When it comes to difficulty, Baldur’s Gate 3 doesn’t pull any punches. The game isn’t unfair, and if you’re smart (or lucky), you can demolish most enemies before they ever know you’re there. But eventually, a goblin is going to stick you in the back with a dagger, or maybe an owlbear gets a lucky hit in and claws your face off. Either way, you will need healing, and unlike Final Fantasy, yelling “Curaga!” won’t cut it.
Here are some of the most notable ways to keep your heroes alive in and out of Baldur’s Gate 3‘s punishing combat sequences.
Baldur’s Gate 3: How to Heal During Combat
While in the middle of a brawl, your healing options are somewhat limited. Your most reliable choices are healing spells, skills, and items.

Elizabeth Olsen teamed up with Jeremy Renner for the first time in Avengers: Age of Ultron. But it might have taken some time for the two to warm up to each other because of Renner’s personality.
Jeremy Renner wasn’t ‘overly friendly’ to Elizabeth Olsen when they first met Elizabeth Olsen and Jeremy Renner | Mireya Acierto/FilmMagic
Renner was already a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe when Olsen was recruited for the superhero series. Olsen made her debut in the franchise in an after-credits cameo in Captain America The Winter Soldier. But her official run as Scarlet Witch started in Avengers Age of Ultron. The scale of the project hit Olsen while doing the movie, however, and she began second-guessing her place in the superhero team-up film.
Her first scene with Renner didn’t help her nerves. In a 2017 interview with Vulture, she confided that her co-star might have accidentally made them worse.

In the 1980s, Stevie Nicks, like many other musicians, began embracing the music video to accompany their songs. With the rise of MTV, it became a necessary way to promote music. Nicks put a great deal of effort into her videos; one required extensive shoots, costumes, and acting on Nicks’ part. It didn’t make it far, though. When Nicks first viewed the video, she decided she didn’t want anybody to see it. She thought it was a disaster.

The initial vision for the “Stand Back” music video was a Gone With the Wind-style story. Nicks wears a green velvet gown, rides a horse to a mansion, travels through a war-torn town, and meets a wounded soldier at a saloon. According to Nicks, the process of making it was disastrous.

The Penguins Of Madagascar Penguins Of Madagascar, 6.20pm, ITV2, Monday, May 1
They may have started out as bit-part players, but everyone knows the Cheezy Dibble-loving penguins were the stars of the original film in this franchise. Here they get their own adventure, taking on the evil Dr Octavius Brine (John Malkovich having even more fun than you would expect on vocals), who has a plan to turn the penguins into mutants. Along for the ride is super-spy style wolf North Wind as the action starts at a pace and doesn't let up in its Looney Tunes style quickfire humour. Perfect family viewing if you've got a Bank Holiday day off with the kids.

Beginning in a small opera house, the festival evolved into one of the largest and most respected globally over the past five decades.

For three eventful seasons, "Homeland" revolved around CIA Officer Carrie Mathison (Claire Danes) and her pursuit of disgraced marine Nicholas Brody (Damian Lewis), both professionally and romantically. The back-and-forth game between them was the source of much of the drama and tension on the show. Moreover, Brody's storyline offered a layered depiction of the United States' questionable actions overseas. That is, until "Homeland" decided to kill off the fan-favorite character in season 3. When things started getting stale, it was time to switch up the status quo. From that point on, the Showtime series reinvented itself, behind and in front of the screen.
"Homeland" covered a wide variety of issues on an international level, but homegrown threats were often the focus. The unceremonious end of the complicated double-agent relationship between Mathison and Brody after his death by hanging signified a major shift in the series. The entire third season was priming...

The Legend of Zelda is one of the only game franchises out there that can continually star characters who look, sound, and act the same without them technically being the same characters (with a few exceptions). Aside from superficial similarities, timeless character roles, and Link’s general refusal to speak, the Links and Zeldas of the Legend of Zelda franchise share little in common, including their ages.
It’s no secret that some Links and Zeldas are older than others. All one has to do is compare the Link from Wind Waker to the Link from Twilight Princess to see all Links are not meant to be the same age. However, actually determining the characters’ respective ages on a game-by-game basis is far more complicated. The Legend of Zelda games rarely come out and say how old its cast is supposed to be, so we’re usually left to rely on guides,...

May on the Criterion Channel will be good to the auteurs. In fact they’re giving Richard Linklater better treatment than the distributor of his last film, with a 13-title retrospective mixing usual suspects—the Before trilogy, Boyhood, Slacker—with some truly off the beaten track. There’s a few shorts I haven’t seen but most intriguing is Heads I Win/Tails You Lose, the only available description of which calls it a four-hour (!) piece “edited together by Richard Linklater in 1991 from film countdowns and tail leaders from films submitted to the Austin Film Society in Austin, Texas from 1987 to 1990. It is Linklater’s tribute to the film countdown, used by many projectionists over the years to cue one reel of film after another when switching to another reel on another projector during projection.” Pair that with 2008’s Inning by Inning: A Portrait of a Coach and your completionism will be on-track.

Let’s not mince words: “Jazz Fest: A New Orleans Story” is a high-stepping, hand-waving, spirit-lifting gas. Co-directors Frank Marshall and Ryan Suffern, with the invaluable assistance of editor Martin Singer, have fashioned an infectiously exuberant overview of the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, the Big Easy’s unique and enormous celebration of its music, cuisine and multiculturalism, by combining their own footage of performances and interviews at the 50th iteration of the star-studded annual event — the last before Covid-19 forced cancelation of the 2000 and 2001 editions — and archival footage dating back to the festival’s earliest days.

Whatever the creative team working on Ru Paul’s Drag Race have been doing differently these two past weeks they need to keep it up as the last two episodes have been fantastic! The Daytona Wind acting challenge was hilarious (before the childish farting audio added in post) and last week’s sixties girl-group inspired musical challenge were both extremely entertaining. The latter of which really stepped on production value with graphics, lights and matching costumes but the icing on the cake was that the performance was filmed in one continuous set which really fitted the sixties genre they were aiming for. After her gospel-infused verse clashed with the sixties style everyone else went for, Keri Colbi was sent home which came as a surprise to many as they would assume she would go all the way to the end of the season. Keri’s drag haus is supposedly well...

China has released the list of nominees for its upcoming Golden Rooster Awards, a set of government-approved film industry prizes that it wants to be seen as rivaling the Taipei-based Golden Horse Awards, historically considered as the “Chinese-language Oscars.”
The winning Roosters will be announced amidst a film festival running Dec. 28-30 in the port city of Xiamen in coastal Fujian province, just a short boat ride away from Taiwanese soil. Established in 1981, the event was previously held biannually until China’s rift with the Golden Horse prizes occurred in 2018 following a pro-Taiwanese independence acceptance speech and prompted the Roosters to become an annual occurrence.
This year’s twenty different Rooster Awards will honor films screened theatrically between July 1, 2020 and July 15, 2021. As the event is backed by China’s propaganda department, only local and foreign titles that have received official censorship approvals will be considered.

Deborah Mailman is reflecting on playing Senator Alex Irving, her in character Total Control – the most complex role she believes she’s had in a more than 20 year career.
The Blackfella Films political drama is set to return for a second season tonight on the ABC, and for Mailman, the emotional stakes this time around are higher again.
In the Aacta Award-winning first season, Irving engineered a coup to dethrone Prime Minister Rachel Anderson (Rachel Griffiths), who appointed her to the Senate.
Now, she must face the reality of the alliance she’s made with the Opposition Leader Laurie Martin (William McInnes), taking orders from him and his offsider, enigmatic Indigenous politician Paul Murphy (Wayne Blair).
“In season two, the writers took Alex pretty much to breaking point,” Mailman tells If.
“The emotional energy that was required for some of those moments was exhausting.

This year’s Melbourne International Film Festival (Miff) promises the Australian premieres of highly anticipated local features such as Leah Purcell’s The Drover’s Wife The Legend of Molly Johnson and Justin Kurzel’s Nitram.
Miff unveiled the first slate of projects for its 69th iteration today, which sees it return to cinemas, with the full line-up to be announced July 13.

“This is a film made for Miff’s return to cinema – an outback western of grand vision; a resonant, revisionist force of filmmaking that...
