Of all of Angelina Jolie's films, this is rarely discussed. Jolie did discuss it briefly on "Inside the Actor's Studio" in 2005. She said: "I did a fantastic B-movie." When host James Lipton asked if it was a happy experience, she replied: "It was until I saw it."
Angelina Jolie told The New York Times in 2001 about this movie: "After I saw it, I went home and got sick. I saw it and I threw up. Just nausea. But the kickboxing was fun. It was the first time I was sent to do kickboxing. But I was 17 and I think I thought I was making a real movie, which is odd, since there's a scene when I'm decapitated and talking ... as one does. But, yeah, I saw it and got really sick. I just remember my brother Jamie [Haven] holding me and saying, 'It's going to be all right.'" She didn't audition again for another year.
The film takes place decades after the original Cyborg (1989) starring Jean-Claude Van Damme. Jean-Claude Van Damme, Dayle Haddon and Vincent Kyln appear as Gibson Rickenbacker, Pearl Prophet and Fender Tremolo, in a flashback from archive footage of the first film, which is mentioned by Mercy.
Although the movie is a sequel to the Jean-Claude Van Damme film, in the opening crawl it is not explained what happened after the first movie.
