The premise for "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" is a little complex for the non-Trekkie, but ripe for drama when one delves in.
The titular station, Deep Space Nine, was in orbit around the non-Federation world of Bajor. For the past several decades, Bajor had been militarily occupied by the Nazi-like Cardassians, a species that regularly enslaved and mass-murdered Bajoran citizens. At the outset of the series, the Cardassian occupation had just ended, and Bajor inherited their disused station. In order to aid the Bajoran restoration, Starfleet was assigned to run Deep Space Nine and to oversee the rebuilding of Bajor's government (which was already tilting dangerously close to a corrupt theocracy).
Commander Sisko (Avery Brooks) was the Starfleet officer put in charge of the broken-down DS9 and his first officer was the haughty former Bajoran resistance fighter, Major Kira (Nana Visitor). "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" was unique in...

The remarkable thing about Brad Pitt, who turns 60 on December 18, isn’t the 85 and counting IMDb acting credits under his belt, although that’s a pretty impressive number.

With its list of new releases for May 2023, Amazon Prime Video is increasing its global reach.
The streamer’s biggest original offering this month is a German series. Hohlbeins’ – The Gryphon, based on the works of Wolfgang Holhlbein, will present a sprawling fantasy tale about three teens discovering a fantastical world called The Black Tower where “the Gryphon, a world-devouring monster, mercilessly subjugates all living creatures.”
The only other original title of note in May is Freevee comedy Primo on the 19th. Written by author and journalist Shea Serrano and produced by Michael Schur (The Good Place), this coming-of-age series will follow a teenager balancing “college aspirations, societal expectations, and a hectic home life on the south side of San Antonio.”

For those that don’t follow real estate, one of the biggest stories on the Hollywood front is that Brad Pitt recently sold his Los Angeles home for about $40 million. That’s a hell of a haul considering he bought it for $1.7 million. Oh, and this abode that Brad Pitt purchased in the mid-’90s was actually a haunted house sold to him by none other than Elvira, Mistress of the Dark.
Elvira told People she did her due diligence of letting Pitt know that he wasn’t purchasing any ordinary home. “We were just kind of warning him that a lot of weird things have been going on there in the house since we moved in…And he was very excited about that. He thought that was really cool…So we were telling Brad all about that and he loved it. I mean, there are not many buyers who...

Brad Pitt may be one of Hollywood's biggest stars, but the one thing I've always liked is how he is willing to subvert the expectations of his screen persona. Just take his role in "Kalifornia," possibly the most '90s movie of the big 1990s serial killer trend. It came just two years after he'd wowed everyone with his breezy charisma, acting ability, sunny good looks, and impeccable pecs as a charming hustler in "Thelma & Louise." It was a breakthrough role for Pitt, but even at that early stage of his career, he refused to be typecast. So in "Kalifornia" he played a scuzzy redneck murderer on the road with a yuppie couple (Michelle Forbes and David Duchovny) and his naive trailer trash girlfriend.
As his career progressed beyond Peak-Pitt and his high-profile relationships with Jennifer Anniston and Angelina Jolie, he still refused to rest on his laurels. One...

There are some smart and even provocative ideas motivating Nicola B. Marsh’s four-part Showtime docuseries The 12th Victim, which aims to separate and rehabilitate Caril Ann Fugate from the legacy of notorious spree killer Charles Starkweather, whom she accompanied — whether willingly or unwillingly is the matter up for debate — on a multi-state rampage that left 11 people dead in 1958.
Fugate, still alive and now living in Michigan, has spent decades trying first to appeal her conviction, then for parole and finally for a full pardon. The 12th Victim, which features Oscar winner Morgan Neville among its producers, focuses less on clearing Fugate’s name in a legal sense and more on clearing her name in a cultural sense. The documentary targets the true crime genre and the way Hollywood’s mythologizing of society’s darkest and most unspeakable elements can become a proxy for the truth. This is especially true...

There’s no question Hulu wants to get its viewers in the Halloween mood — the streaming service will add a fresh slate of horror movies to its collection once October hits. In addition to watching Jigsaw psychologically torture victims in “Saw,” “Saw 2” and “Saw 6,” audiences will also be able to see the original Hill House in the 1963 thriller “The Haunting.” For those in the mood for a classic, horror favorites from Alfred Hitchcock will also become available come Oct. 1, including “Rear Window,” “Psycho” and “The Birds.”

Spooky season is upon us, and Hulu is getting into the spirit with a number of horror or Halloween-themed offerings on its October line-up.
Along with Hulu originals like the horror anthology “Into the Dark” and the second season of Stephen King’s “Castle Rock,” the streamer is also offering films from the “Saw,” “Blade” and “Hellraiser” franchises beginning next month. For the more faint of heart, Hulu is also offering three seasons of Food Network’s “Halloween Wars” and the surely adorable “Kids Halloween Baking Championship.”
Not specifically Halloween-themed, but potentially haunting: All six seasons of the original run of “The Hills” will be available to stream on Oct. 1 for those looking to revisit the halcyon days of reality television and questionable late-aughts fashion.

Amazon Prime Video has confirmed that five original shows will be debuting new episodes on the streaming service in September. Among these are the first seasons of the groundbreaking animated series “Undone,” which will be available in both 4K and Hrd, and the German import “Chris Tall Presentes,” an unscripted series starring the comedian. Another animated series, “Niko And The Sword of Light,” returns for a sophomore season. And “Transparent” will sign off with a sung finale.
The Amazon original film “Late Night” will start streaming justt a few months after its successful theatrical run. Mindy Kaling both wrote and starred in this wry look at the world of TV, with Emma Thompson stealing scenes as the beleaguered host of a failing talk show.

Amazon is out with its list of new additions coming to Prime Video next month, and you’ll want to mark your calendar for the epic musical finale of “Transparent,” coming Sept. 27.
“Chris Tall Presents…” — the first unscripted German Amazon Original which features six episodes of the comedian performing stand-up and introducing his friends as guests — will premiere at a date still to be determined. The same is the case for “Family Man,” a new Amazon Original series which, according to the streaming giant, tells the story of a middle-class man who works for a special cell of the National Investigation Agency.
Other Prime Originals include the first seasons of “El Corazón de Sergio Ramos,” about the Spanish soccer player, and the animated series “Undone.” “Rango,” “Legally Blonde” and “Saturday Night Fever” are among some of the already released movies that will now be available on Prime.

The acclaimed actress plays a single mom who takes on Octavia Spencer in the new Blumhouse thriller.
Juliette Lewis is so well-known for playing so many characters on the edge that it’s almost surprising to see her in director Tate Taylor's Ma as Erica, a single mom who moves back to her hometown with her teenage daughter Maggie (Diana Silvers). Determined to get back on her feet after a divorce, Erica is equally resolved to be a solid parent to her daughter while also being her friend.
Yet Erica and Maggie are soon both caught up in the web spun by Sue Ann (Octavia Spencer), who lures Maggie and her friends to her basement with promises of a safe space to party and drink. But “Ma,” as she tells the kids to call her, has a psychotic agenda of her own, fueled by her own history in the town,...

Directed by Dominic Sena and written by Tim Metcalfe with Stephen Levy, Kalifornia is essentially a snapshot of the early 1990s. The film centers on a cute creative couple that feel something is missing in their lives, and so wish to go to California to liven up their work lives. Carrie, played by Michelle Forbes is a photographer who specializes in edgy black-and-white nudes and fetish shots, is the type of strong, take-no-shit woman who embodies the cultural shift that '90s ladies did --- a precursor to the Riot Grrls in black leather boots and red lipstick with an empowered view. USA Network gave a straight-to-series order to Treadstone, a Jason Bourne spinoff covering Operation Treadstone, the fictional (or so we think and hope) CIA black ops program that turned Jason Bourne into an amnesiac killing machine.
Heroes creator Tim Kring will serve as showrunner and writer on Treadstone, which showcases the formation of the franchise's CIA black ops program, following the exploits of its sleeper agents, activated for stealthy missions around the world. Production is set to begin in 2019. There is no potential release date lined up yet.

"I always liken myself to the bearded lady," says Juliette Lewis. "Because I'm an actress turned musician, a woman doing male-dominated rock & roll. ... I'm the oddity at the freak show, you know?"
Lewis is speaking with Rolling Stone from New York City where, in a few hours, she'll be attending the Tribeca Film Festival premiere of a new documentary on her musical life, Hard Lovin' Woman. Since breaking out over 20 years ago in "Thelma & Louise," Brad Pitt has been difficult to miss.
After landing his place in cinematic history as a hunky (and shirtless) criminal, Pitt's career blossomed with starring roles in critical and box office hits alike, such as "A River Runs Through It" (1992), "Seven" (1995), and "12 Monkeys" (1995) -- just to name a few. In the past two decades, Pitt has become one of Hollywood's biggest stars, but his role has expanded beyond just acting. In only the past few years, he's produced two Best Picture nominated films, "Moneyball" (2011) and "12 Years a Slave" (2013). This fall, he's back in front of the camera leading his battle-hardened platoon into Nazi Germany in "Fury."

For this week’s spotlight piece, I wanted to take a look at one of Hollywood’s absolute bigger stars. He’s about as A-list as the A-list gets…the name? Well, Brad Pitt of course. Not only is he a movie star with all capital letters (Movie Star!) and a top tier celebrity, he’s also developed into one of the industry’s best and most interesting actors as well. Pitt is the type of star that doesn’t rest on his laurels and often seems to attach himself to challenging material, something that will win the man an acting Oscar one day (he already won his first one last year for helping to produce Best Picture winner 12 Years a Slave). As high as he’s soared already, the best could still be to come. Pitt got his noticeable start in the business (after some uncredited acting jobs on...

At 18, Juliette Lewis was a Hollywood star. But fame brought drug addiction and panic attacks. As she returns to the big screen, she talks revolt, rehab and rock'n'roll with Ryan Gilbey
Juliette Lewis has been drug-free for – how long is it now? Give her a minute. She's working it out. "I was 22. I'm 40 now. So that's …" And yet one of the pleasures of being in her company is that she acts like someone trying to conceal a certain chemical wooziness. She totters and wobbles when she crosses the room like a human Slinky, in her low-cut cream top and black leather smudge of a skirt. Her speech patterns have the same jerkiness: when she declares that she has finished doing TV appearances for the day and so can now "be as idiosyncratic as I want", she pronounces that adjective gingerly, with the trepidation of someone walking a tightrope in heels.

It’s fitting that Brad Pitt’s first-ever role was in a movie called Hunk. For the better part of the 1990s, Pitt fit the hunky bill, with his long-flowing locks in Legends of the Fall and romancing Geena Davis in Thelma & Louise, his breakout film role.
Pitt has always made creative choices, even in the early days of his fame by mixing mainstream turns in A River Runs Through It with the edgy Kalifornia and dark True Romance. He’s an actor who has continued to make bold choices both in front of the camera as an actor and behind-the-scenes as a producer.
His latest role puts him on screen opposite Michael Fassbender in the star-studded Ridley Scott drama The Counselor. As womanizing and charismatic middleman Westray, the role is just the latest in a long line of Pitt’s nearly thirty-year career.

Is Brad Pitt really the right guy to take on a global zombie epidemic in "World War Z"?
Sure, he's got leading man and action hero credentials, not to mention a handful of Oscar nominations that suggest he'll be convincing at playing a guy fighting off the undead.
Still, based on his filmography, shouldn't we be a little suspicious? Judging by the roles he's played, couldn't he be a secret zombie himself?
That's right: Brad Pitt, an undead monster, a cold-blooded hunter of humans, an emotionless automaton, a seemingly unstoppable killer. Pitt has embodied all these aspects of zombiedom on-screen, many times over. Oh, sure, he's Angelina Jolie's devoted fiancé and father to her six kids, but then, what better cover? Besides, isn't she the woman who used to wear a vial of blood around her neck? Could the two of them be raising, in secret, a brood of ridiculously good-looking zombies?...

Horror stories that are grounded in reality, and yet not bound by rules … these inspire Adam Simon and Tim Metcalfe (The Haunting in Connecticut). And it’s what they appreciate about Seed, a powerful and terrifying novel written by Ania Ahlborn. Simon and Metcalfe have been selected by Amazon Studios to adapt Seed for the screen.
“Ania’s character insight and scenic eye managed to do what few horror writers even attempt, let alone succeed at – and that is, create a fictional world we instantly recognize as our own, as true,” Simon said. “Like Stephen King and a handful of Horror masters, she knows that writing great horror fiction is like directing lightning – your pole’s gotta be grounded.”
Seed was added to the Amazon Studios development slate last year, and Ahlborn says the experience has been “nothing but awesome.” And she’s a fan of Simon and Metcalfe. “I...

Kirsten Dunst was only 11 when she took a role in Interview with the Vampire opposite Tom Cruise (Sexiest Man Alive, ’90) and Brad Pitt (Sexiest Man Alive, ’95). Playing an immortal child-vampire with an eerie maturity, Dunst actually got to kiss Pitt during filming. You would have thought that this would have made her feel like the luckiest little girl in the whole gosh darn world. But in an interview with Bullett magazine, Dunst reveals that kiss was “just a peck,” and it wasn’t even a particularly memorable peck. “Everyone at the time was like, ‘You’re so lucky you kissed Brad Pitt,...

Movie characters may seem more glamorous than you and me, but they've gotta eat. And you know who eats a lot in movies? Brad Pitt. And unlike the rest of us, even in comic moments, he looks good doing it (shocker).
Pitt did a fair amount of eating in his Oscar-nominated turn as Billy Beane in "Moneyball," but he chows down so much in so many movies, we're starting to wonder if the actor just gets hungry on set and brings his lunch into the scene with him. We're just waiting to see how much he ingests in "Killing Them Softly," out this week.
Movies Included (Click to Buy):
Troy | Mr. and Mrs. Smith | Moneyball | Ocean's Eleven | Johnny Suede | The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford | The Devil's Own | Inglorious Basterds | Across the Tracks | Cutting Class | Kalifornia | Spy Game | Meet Joe Black | Sleepers | Seven Years in Tibet...

The number two slot in our most hotly anticipated films of this year’s Cannes film festival goes to Andrew Dominik’s third film – following the excellent Chopper, and the beautifully crafted The Assassination of Jesse James…
Killing Them Softly, which of course was initially called Cogan’s Trade, follows the director’s trend of making crime pictures: adapted from George V Higgins’ classic 1974 crime novel, the film follows Brad Pitt’s enforcer Jackie Cogan who is called upon to clean up after a high-stakes card game is heisted. There is no doubt potential for Driver style stylised hyper-violence, and the tacky rename does imply something more generically crass than we will probably get, but the opportunity to see such a plot through Dominik’s own artistic filter is hugely intriguing.
I can’t resist the parallels with the excellent Ben Affleck project The Town, and indeed this could well...

Nominated for two Academy Awards, Brad Pitt's eccentric career is finally getting serious recognition. He talks about his love of obsessive characters, his acting highs and lows – and how he smoked himself into a doughnut
Brad Pitt pops his head through the balcony doorway and stage-whispers my name. He bounds round to shake hands and surveys the cauldron below that is Hollywood Boulevard. No fuss. No fanfare. No harried flunkies with clipboards listing the dos and don'ts. Just one of the most recognisable men on the planet in a black jumpsuit and sneakers. And me. And a bodyguard as tall as a sequoia outside the hotel room. "How ya doing?"
And then the deluge. I had heard of Pitt's lively curiosity, his passion for architecture, philanthropy, his catholic taste in reading material. I didn't know about the delivery system – a lava flow articulated in a deep, rural drawl: "Who...

Brad Pitt is a bit of a puzzle. One of the best character actors working today, he's trapped in a leading man's bone structure. And his choices defy traditional Hollywood logic; after bursting onto the scene in 1991 as the small-time hustler who seduces Geena Davis in "Thelma & Louise" and as the beatific brother of 1992's "A River Runs Through It," he likely had his pick of big movie roles. Instead, he grew a wild beard, had his front tooth chipped by a dentist, and appeared not to wash his hair for weeks to play a crazed killer in the indie "Kalifornia."Pitt's career would continue this somewhat schizophrenic pattern; for every big-budget blockbuster he appeared in ("Interview With a Vampire: The Vampire Chronicles," "Ocean's Eleven," "Troy"), he would lend his star power to a smaller movie that likely wouldn't have gotten made without his participation ("The Assassination of Jesse...

What defines a ‘gonzo’ character? Recklessness. Fly by the seat of your pants attitude. They are troublemakers and pranksters. When they enter frame things are ratcheted up on the crazy scale. And, maybe most importantly, they represent an element of danger (to themselves or those around them). However, to make this list, they cannot be mentally disturbed.
My list is definitely thin on women, but not for lack of trying. If you have some good ones that slipped through my cracks, let me know.

Straddling the fine line between success and failure in Hollywood is like walking a tightrope of future career persecution and retrospective judgement.
Success on the TV screen is not always amply rewarded with a success on the big screen. There are a few ways to make the cut – reinvent your career through TV (Keifer Sutherland style), take the path less trodden with a series of slow-burning support roles (Jk Simmons) or have a huge hit on TV simply too large to ignore (Ricky Gervais).

My memories of 1993's Kalifornia are vague, but I recall liking it at the time. Co-star David Duchovny was a big deal because of The X-Files, you had Juliette Lewis playing the lover of a maniac one year before audiences saw her in Natural Born Killers and then there was Brad Pitt, bringing his charisma and weird tics to the role of Early Grayce. It was also Dominic Sena's feature debut; he later went on to helm Gone in Sixty Seconds, Swordfish and last year's dud Season of the Witch.
For the release of Kalifornia, DC/Vertigo Comics was planning to publish an adaptation of this R-rated thriller. Duncan Fegredo and Chuck Dixon were involved and, last night, former DC/Vertigo employee Tim Pilcher ran all 32 pages of the Kalifornia unpublished adaptation on his blog.

You may have thought he was just pouting at the camera, but Brad Pitt follows a profound and complicated acting method
Unusually for a movie star of his stature, Brad Pitt has never appeared on Inside the Actor's Studio. Perhaps this is because he doesn't want to spend an hour of his life being fawned over by a creepy-eyed interviewer and a room full of drippy sycophants, but it's more likely that he's just very wary of revealing the secrets of his acting method.
Because, make no mistake, Pitt has an acting method. It's why he can flit from action to comedy to impressionistic, dinosaur-heavy meditations of the meaning of life itself with enviable ease. But what's the secret behind Pitt's style? Is it that he's really pretty? No. Well, yes, a bit. But mainly no. In fact, Pitt has a long and complicated process that's kept firmly under lock and key.

Cage earned respectability in Tinseltown by demonstrating an unwavering commitment to immersing himself in virtually any role, eventually earning an Oscar fifteen years ago for his work in Mike Figgis' Leaving Las Vegas. Three months later, Cage turned himself into an action star with the arrival of Michael Bay's The Rock in the summer of '96 and things have never been the same. There was a time when I didn't mind Cage making soulless action-adventure films because their success gave him the breathing room to take risks with small wonderful dramas like Ridley Scott's Matchstick Men,...
