  • Randy Quaid struggles to keep this beautifully photographed, but ultimately pointless, adventure movie interesting. The premise is a good one, a lost lake of gold, and an old coot with a diary and a map searching for it. Various shady characters are all interested in just one thing, finding the gold. Unfortunately "Legends of the North" has a choppy and badly undeveloped script which sinks the entire movie. Supposedly based on a story by Jack London, you would expect better. Characters drop in and out with little development. Certain parts of the script seem based on nothing more than lame coincidences. A love story appears out of nowhere, and then vanishes in another contrived dead end. 95 minutes of nice landscape, with characters wandering about in the snow, does not make a movie. A disappointment. - MERK
