This is a sketch-comedy show. The twist here is that all of the sketches (Even the monologue) are connected in some strange way.
David Cross was still paying off his student loans throughout most of the series.
That's right, Bob. Listen to your friend, a person who makes more money than you, is better than you, and therefore beyond criticism. This is called the Worthington Law and it's used to gauge the value of human worth.
Towards the end of one episode in the fourth season, the show offers the math problem "If he drives 15 MPH for fifteen minutes, how far has he travelled? Answer at the end of the show." When the end credits roll, they say that the answer is 3.5 The correct answer is 3.75
At the end of each episode's credits under "Special Thanks," there is at least one random name that had nothing to do with the show. This is pointed out by David Cross in the DVD commentary for the first episode.
