I watched this show in the 90s but never got to catch every episode, much less in order. As such I always had more questions than answers and I hate not finishing a story. Queue up to the 2020s and just about everything can be found online. I finally got to watch it in order in all its glory.

This was, and is, a great show that was cancelled too soon. Why was it cancelled when it was still rating well? Some jackass at NBC decided to can it in favor of the XFL. The XFL folded after 1 season and NBC lost 35 million dollars. Ha! Should have kept The Pretender... At least TNT gave us a couple follow-up movies. There have even been some Pretender books.

One thing I'll never forget from watching this as a kid was how much it inspired me to learn. I wanted to be like Jarod which meant learning everything I could. I got a library card and would ride to the library on my bicycle, stuffing my backpack with books until I could barely zip it shut. Then I'd come back a week or two later and do the same thing again.
  • Lots of people have already done good summaries of this show, which I think has a lot going for it. I'm on S1 E20, and am pretty much hooked. Yes, it's formulaic, but there's enough new stuff happening to keep things moving and add new dynamics all the time. Gotta say, of all the TV I've ever watched though, I've never seen a character who is easier to absolutely despise than "Miss Parker," the adult version of the child Jarod grew up with inside "The Center." She's like the "Anti-Jarod." Both of them went through awful childhoods, but he came out of it determined to try to make life better for suffering people, and she came out of it wanting to make life miserable for everyone around her. Every time I try to feel some compassion for her when she shows a little vulnerability, she goes back into her tigress mode and lashes out, abusing her equals and especially her inferiors while shrinking humbly before her higher-ups and supervisors. That makes her an A-1 coward and a bully.
  • What is disappointing is they've left many unanswered questions.
  • There's been many shows over the years featuring a nomadic character who helps people as he goes about his journey, but THE PRETENDER is probably my favorite of the bunch. Whereas in other shows the character was always the same, this series added a twist: he was a genius with the ability to assume any profession he chose, from park ranger to FBI special agent. I'm surprised he never posed as an astronaut and went into space. Michael T. Weiss was terrific as the title character, Jarod, who helps right wrongs as he attempts to find the parents he was taken from as a child and continually eludes those chasing him from the mysterious organization from where he's escaped. Because of his ability, each episode was like an individual little movie, because he was someone different each week. And one of the things I liked was the way he would get revenge. Rather than just go for the person, he would slowly toy with them, taking his plan one step at a time. It was really fun to watch him play around with the person.

Sexy Andrea Parker played Miss. Parker (an amusing coincidence that she herself said was one main reasons she took the role), who was filled with utter determination to capture Jarod and return him to the Centre, despite the times he helped save her own life and was someone she knew as a child growing up in the Centre. He even got her to start questioning the mysterious circumstances surrounding the death of her mother, whose killer has remained a mystery through four seasons and two TV movies. Patrick Bauchau was Sydney, one of the few people Jarod ever felt that he could trust, and a father figure to him. Sydney often seemed happy for Jarod that he was free of the Centre and able to experience life, and their phone conversations (when Jarod would call for advice or just to talk) were always very nice. The good supporting cast included Richard Marcus (appropriately evil as the nefarious Mr. Raines), Jon Gries as scardy cat computer whiz Broots, Jamie Denton as Parker's brother, Harve Presnell as Parker's father (though that later became debatable following events in the first TV movie), and one-time James Bond himself George Lazenby as Jarod's father, who disappeared from the show as mysteriously as he had appeared.

For three seasons, THE PRETENDER maintained a high quality of entertaining adventures and stories, with a good balance between the Jarod "pretending" stories and the Centre mythology sub-plots. But with the forth season, the show made the same mistake THE X-FILES made: it got too involved with itself. There was more and more focus on the internal conspiracies of the Centre instead of a focus on Jarod and his exploits. The show's mythology began to take over, and it seemed each week there was a new revelation about someone, like the writers couldn't make up their minds as to what they wanted to do. Thanks to this and a heavy dose of pre-emps, PRETENDER began to sag and was cancelled at the end of the season (just so NBC could carry XFL, and look how well that paid off).

But thankfully, some loose ends were tied up by TNT, who picked up the show for reruns and gave us two movies. The first three seasons were the best, and I hope some day the show is made available on DVD.
  • This is 2023 and I am re-watching The Pretender. I find myself going back to the old shows because all the new ones are CRAP. The Pretender had excellent writers, good actors and was suitable for the whole family. There have been other shows with similar story lines but lacking the humor and "justice" this one has. Two similar shows in the past that I enjoyed were "The Fugitive" and "The Immortal" with Christopher George. This show had the same qualities but was less intense. The hero was always on the run, evading and outsmarting the bad guys. No blood, sex, gore and most important NO WOKE. Happy viewing.
  • This series was a completely new concept and I haven't see any like it since. There are only a few shows like this.

It's a shame they tried to wrap it all up with a movie. This was a brilliantly written film with top notch actors and so many levels of story. Jarod is a cool character and Michael T. Weiss portrayed him to perfection. I don't understand why he didn't get more of a career from this.
  • If you haven't seen it, do it! You won't be disappointed until you realize that the show was canceled much to soon.... Just 4 seasons and two movies...:(

But apart from that it is one of the best shows ever made. Good plot, great actors, many unexpected twists to the story, funny episodes, and sad ones too. A show that one get's addicted too very fast. And there are DVD-boxes of all the seasons and a DVD of the movies is coming in March 2007, so you can watch everything over and over again.... Although the show was first aired in the mid nineties it still doesn't feel old. See it soon!

This program had it all....great character development (not to mention great actors with chemistry, ongoing mystery plot lines, wholesome good over evil scenarios completed in one(occasionally 2)epsisode. Would love to see this one resurrected. We need more TV/Movies like this. There are enough soaps on during the day. Lets get rid of the night time soaps/boob watch stuff. I am surprised that I didn't catch this show when it originally aired. I found it by accident (design?) at Costco when it came out on DVD. After reading the back I though I'd take a chance...it sounded pretty good. 20 minutes into the first episode, I was hooked. When I finally finished season 4 I was a Pretender Junkie. I went looking for more online and found 2 more virtual seasons on FanFic. I'm almost through season 6 and have 2 virtual movies to read. That should get me almost to the DVD release of the 2 real Pretender movies' release on DVD in March. Can't wait. I WANT MORE!!!!

The Pretender is the best TV series ever made. I love Jarod,he was a pretender who was on the run from The Center,Miss. Parker,Broots,Sidney,Mr. Parker,Mr. Raines,Brigitte,Mr. Lyle and Sidney,he was stolen from his parents and now he is on the run,he search from his past and he helped people,he use his knowledge as the pretender,he use other identity's to help people who were a victims and nobody cares,he investigates on his own to find the truth,to bring back family's who veer separated,he is hunted from his past, from The Center, from Miss Parker,Sidney and Broots,he is looking for his mother,he find his brother but he was shoot and killed from Mr. Lyle and only Sidney helped him,but nobody knows that, except Angelo a boy who Mr. Raines destroyed his mind. I love Jarod he was the only who cares for people, that was the best and great show,i didn't like the other characters, but i love Jarod his journey i love him,how he helped people, this is the best show ever made it deserts legendary status. I'don't know why the last only for season's why it was canceled, why,it was the best TV show, the characters, were great and the show was great, the show get more and more fans and was the most watching TV show, but why did not stand more years on TV,was because the actor's,Baywatch stand eleven years, but this show who was cool and stand only four years, only eighty six episodes were made and two movies, were Baywatch get two hundred episodes, hoe they stand so long i won't to know? I'won't know what happened wit Jarod he ever find his mother,he was ever whit hi's father and the girl Zoe who rescue her and stopped her to make suicide, what happened with Miss Parker she ever get her love of her life, what happened with Sidney and Broots and what happened with Mr. Raines and Mr. Lyle, and what happened with The Center, can somebody explained it's just like it was in the Nowhere Man when Thomas Veil get's the answers they cancel the show and was never explained what happened wit him,or in Two what happened with Gus McClain he ever clear his name and he proved that he gate a twin brother, every that show was great, they canceled why is that, why they did not made a fifth season that's not fair, some boring show's made two hundred episodes and the they stand for ten or eleven years and the best and the cool shows don't. I don't know why they doing that but is too bad for The Pretender it was the best show that it was created,i'watch every episodes and both movies and i'was never bored, every episode was exciting, but why they not filming the third movie of The Pratender and explained the end. I'can say only one thing i'love Jarod and The Pretender.

I don't know why I ever started watching this show. I have seen every episode, but I wish that I could go back in time and prevent myself from wasting all the free time. There are much better things that I should have been doing with my life instead of watching this dumb TV show. I don't understand why anyone in their right mind would like this show. There is too many questions that go unanswered and never will be. This show doesn't even have an ending. It quickly went nowhere fast and not even the writers seemed to understand what should be happening on the show. I know that this is science fiction and it is unrealistic, but that's no excuse for crappy storytelling. For every question there are more and more questions and ultimately, no answers. If you've never seen this show, don't waste your time. I already have.
  • I did not catch this series when it first aired. My brother constantly spoke its praises, but I believed it would be the usual boring weekly drama.

    I was wrong.

On my brother's recommendation, I taped every episode of the show when it ran in syndication on various channels. I have been slowly watching them during the Year 2002 (and now 2003), and after the first 40 or so episodes, I am here to tell you that this show is nothing short of amazing. The characters are interesting, the premise is, if not unique, at least enjoyable, and the subplots make you yearn for more. Just when you think it can't get any better, it does. It's difficult to believe that this show debuted in 1996. Not only has it stood the test of time, but it is better than most of the fare that has been aired in 2000 and beyond.

I am looking forward to the next 40 episodes and the TV Movies, which I hope will be equally engaging. I recommend that, if you haven't watched this program, start from the beginning and give it 6 episodes or so. You'll be hooked.

    1. Love the character of Miss Parker. I'm fed up with the dumb shallow bimbo female leads. 2. I love the B side of the story, much more intriguing then the Jarod beats up the bad guy every week, while those entrapped within the Centre fight for the lives and their sanity. 3. I like Sci fi, and although there are no space craft, there is the cloning, the 1984ish. Fahrenheit 451 touch of evil. 4. It has a great ensemble cast. I can't see the show without anyone of them. 5. The actors have made the characters their own. ex. Andrea Parker OWNS Miss Parker, as to Michael T Weiss own Jarod. Or Jon own Broots or Patrick own Sydney. 6. You never know what to expect from one episode to the other. You go one week from a heart wrenching scene to a rather off the cuff scene with Mr. Wiggles. (April Fools show) 7. Great writing for the most part. 8. I can watch the show over and over and even though I know my favorite episodes by heart they never seem dated to me. 9.There is nothing on TV that challenges this show, even yet. Alias tried but got too tied up with soft meaningless episodes. 10. Did I mention: Great acting, great writing, and a very unique story. and of course Miss Parker.
  • Like so many others I was preteen/teen when this show first aired & it was my first real "favorite" tv show. Having all 4 seasons on Prime to watch again brings me back to my childhood & it gives me something to bond with my aunt with. It's an absolutely wonderful show with a great storyline. Something that keeps your interest from one show to the next. I would like a decent final movie to be done. Maybe with Prime bringing it back they're gauging to see if there would be enough interest. The fact it only took them two weeks to add the final two seasons I think goes to show there is still plenty of interest left in the show. Recommend this for everyone!
  • Absolutely wonderful series with the amazing Michael T. Weiss and Patrick Bauchau. The series were definitely ahead of their time! I remember being absolutely glued to the TV as a teenager for this. What a concept, that Jarod could portray a different person with a different job in every episode. I wanted to be like him when I grew up.

Sadly, the series ended too soon, or well, it ended with two movies that didn't make a lot of sense and then got taken off TV unfortunately. I am still expecting an ending or a sequel.

All the characters on this show were amazing: Jarod, Sydney, Ms. Parker, Lyle, Broots, Angelo, Raines, Zoe! I loved all of them!
  • I have seen all kind of TV shows and movies. I can say the pretender is the best TV show out of all of them.

They should get new episodes like a spin off show or at lest a 3rd movie. But i think both a new movie and a spin off show would be the best thing they could do.

TNT did Premiere 2 pretender Movies how ever they did not wrap up the story lines and the movies were more like top episodes of the show then a big movie. So i hope if they make an other movie it would be biger like they did with the 1st x files movie and the new star trek one.

Well i went on the internet and look up the pretender and i found a few sites. One of them i found was

    www.gopetition.com.au

It is a petition site and i found one for (A third The Pretender movie, New episodes or a Pretender Mini Series). So i put my name on it. At this time it has a few Signatures on it.
  • Warning: Spoilers
The Pretender is definitely a cut above the rest. However, it's still far from flawless. Think of it as a combination of Quantum Leap (at least the first season of TP), Dexter, The Fugitive, The X-Files, Profiler, and Alias -- all rolled into one. It has tension, suspense, surprises, secrets, conspiracies, lessons to be learned, some eye candy, some cannibalism, a little bit of humor, and even a little bit less of romance. Unfortunately, it also has an annoying amount of formulaic predictability, and some instances of weak/lazy writing, including but not limited to the over-use of dead people who never actually died, as well as plot arcs that simply vanish for entire seasons (or longer).

The Pretender is a show about innocence lost; innocence sought; innocence never fully recovered; vengeance; justice; 21st century end game global politics; and, most important of all, genetic manipulation coupled with extensive mind control. It's also about the importance of family, and while that's a good thing in itself, when it comes to the Parkers, that's more than an oxymoron. (The Parkers are more like the perennial winners on: "THE INFERNAL FAMILY FEUD".)

Despite its strengths, there are some aspects of The Pretender that are claustrophobic -- meaning, things are too nuclear and too tight and too dense. (i.e. Miss Parker's maniacal obsession with "FINDING HER MOTHER'S KILLER"; "FINDING JAROD"; "FINDING JAROD'S FATHER"; and, possibly, most nauseating of all: "EARNING DADDY'S LOVE".) Then, on the other hand, there are elements so loosely connected to the story that they barely make sense. (i.e. Mitumbo, the "Circle Of Fire", the Jarod clone, the 3 Argyle episodes, Broot's daughter, Jarod's mother -- who is shown ONCE in real time, then never again, etc.) And of course there are the all too common for this genre stupid Keystone Cops moves made by a so-called clandestine intelligence agency, in this case, The Centre. (And the constant lack of voice, location, and email monitoring is just outright laughable.)

The acting is about what you'd expect from a major network TV series. It's good at times, passable at other times, and poor some of the time. But the actors seem to be well cast, for the most part, and they pull off their respective roles admirably. (I just wish they would have chosen someone else as their hairstylist. Jarod's hair style for the first season was a distraction, and Miss Parker's hair style looked like a helmet/wig for most of the series. Her makeup also looked, at times, like it had been applied with a trowel.)

Most of the seasons are solid, except for season 4 -- they really dropped the ball with that one. All we get are 18 formulaic "save/revenge" scenarios, and none of the "looking for father, mother, sister" arcs. It was silly -- and outright annoying -- especially considering the major revelations presented in season 3's finale. The writers clearly lost their way in season 4. (And if I were Michael Weiss, I'd stick to acting and forget about directing. His "Ghosts From The Past" directorial debut was probably the worst Pretender episode in the entire series.)

Overall, however, the series is definitely addictive, and is at its best when Jarod ranges from innocent (i.e. the first time he tastes ice cream, the first time he sees Silly Putty, etc.) to Dexter-like (i.e. plotting and implementing appropriate revenge scenarios). It is also truly at its best when it shows the touching connection between young Jarod and young Miss Parker. It is also strong when it reveals the true evil elements via Dr./Mr. Raines, Mr. Parker, Lyle, Mr. Cox, Mitumbo, and even early Sydney. On the other hand it is weak when it tries to get too cutesy (i.e. the 3 Argyle shows), when it over-uses the "back from the dead" themes, and when it fails to allow Miss Parker to grow emotionally and intellectually from the start of the series to the final episode. She just never seems to "get it" (i.e. that Jarod is the ONLY one she can really trust, aside from Broots), and it gets really old after 84+ episodes.

The most egregious offense, however, comes at the transition between the end of season 3 and the entire season 4. Season 3's finale was very powerful. Then season 4 ran for 18 weeks without a single reference to the major developments that occurred in Season 3's finale. It never even got tied up in Season 4's finale, and that's just inexcusable. The show teased its viewers, which is fine to a certain extent; it's what contributes to its addictive quality. But the Season 3 to Season 4 gap is just too large to be acceptable at any level. The writers clearly got lost and took the viewers along for far too many dead end rides. The shows also got a little too heavy handed with Jarod's delivery of the moral punchlines; they were too over-acted and predictable.

When it's all said and done, however, The Pretender is one of the best shows, if not THE best show, of its kind to ever air. The characters -- and some of the lessons -- will stick around in one's mind for a long, long time.

    The Pretender: Rating: 8.5/10
  • I somehow missed this show in its original run in the mid/late 90's. But as luck would have it, I've recently discovered this show in re-runs and was so interested by it that I even bought the Season 1 DVD set. The show consists of a hero (Jarod) who is a genius capable of insinuating himself into any profession or situation. Kidnapped as a child and exploited by "The Centre", Jarod escapes and sets out to find his long-lost parents. During his search, Jarod uses his abilities to seek justice for strangers he reads about in newspaper articles. Part of what makes this series great is the relationship between Jarod and Centre psychologist/instructor Sydney who has raised Jarod from childhood and become the closest thing Jarod has ever known to a father. Additionally, Centre Hench-woman "Miss Parker" tracks Jarod relentlessly, while discovering more and more that the Centre has manipulated her own life almost as much as they have Jarod's. The only negative thing I have to say about this show is that it was canceled prior to its conclusion. An attempt at a TV Movie "Pretender 2001" was made to give us the answers about Jarod's family but I have yet to find a copy to see how it ends. It's too bad there aren't quality shows like this on today to save us from Reality-TV.
  • This is the Best TV show EVER AND EVER!!! This TV Show MUST Continuous, because it never show how it ends!! I hope seen it again. I have waited for .. 10.years and i need answers!! - and i need Andrea Parker in that show!!! about show: Miss Parker- she is perfect, i can't explain with words: she is the best!! the evil+with sensitive and good. Perfect. Emotional best play in show.

and other cast is perfect. i never regret that i have watched all 4 season. YOU MUST SEEN IT!!

    you won't regret!!

I HOPE SOON SEE REST OF MOVIE or better- season 5!!!!
  • This show started out as a mid-season replacement in '96 on NBC. However, The "Pretender" went on to prove its worth in the prime-time ratings-game, season after season.

The "Pretender" could best be summed-up as part of a sub-genre of the Action-adventure category; the Chase-show. The Chase-show always revolves around one basic plot-line; the main character(s) are running from, and/or to someone, or something. These Chase-shows can be some of the worst on TV, or some of the best. The "Pretender" falls into the latter category, in my humble opinion.

The main character in the series, Jared, was kidnapped as a child, and whisked away to a heinous organization called the "Centre". Jared happens to be a genius, and he's used by those at the "Centre", to create ingenious methods to destroy their enemies. As an innocent child, who'd been swiped from his family, Jared has no choice but to go along with those at the "Centre", who exploit his genius IQ.

As an adult, and by then fully aware of the exploitation he'd been forced to endure by the "Centre" during his childhood, Jared escapes. He's pursued by his former mentor (and former father-figure) Sydney. Joining in the quest to capture Jared, are the rabidly-determined femme-fatale, Miss Parker, and her computer-whiz henchman, Broots.

Jared manages to elude his would-be captors, by impersonating a different member of a profession in each episode. Throughout the series, Jared had posed as a doctor, lawyer, policeman, airline pilot, etc., etc., etc. One of the main reasons the show held my interest, was to see who Jared would impersonate in the next episode. Whenever Jared morphed into one professional or another, he got to help out others in trouble, while keeping one-step-ahead of his pursuers from the "Centre".

Jared also kept trying to find out about, and get in contact with, his real family, during the course of the series. As someone who had been cruelly wrenched away from his family in childhood, he was a man determined to solve the puzzle of his past.

Then, there was also the sub-plot running through this series. This involved how Sydney, Miss Parker, and Broots, were all just pawns of the "Centre" themselves. The real evil character in the show, and the one who had orchestrated Jared's childhood kidnapping, was Mr. Raines.

As the series progressed, Miss Parker, Sydney and Broots, together tried to figure out just what the sinister "Centre" was up to, and how to stop it. This all made for an Adventure-show with much more depth, and character-development, than most of its ilk.

Overall, I'd say the that, "Pretender" was the best of all the Adventure-series, which were on TV during the 90s.
  • One word : BRILLIANT! I watched this series about 10 years ago, and remembered it few weeks ago.. Absolutely fantastic plot, not too much action (which I like), good vs. bad, justice, love, lies and betrayal from nearest person, twisted friendship - even though she is chasing him, she loves him (one way or another) ..... And all of these dosed properly! Perfect!

I love the relationship between Sydney an Jarod (I secretly hoped that Sydney is Jarod's father), that Sydney's fatherly protection and Jarod's thrust in Sydney even after all those years in The Centre... And , of course, Jarod and Miss Parker (now I'm secretly hoping that there is gonna be filmed another movie (or any kind of closure), and that they would be together)!!

I hope that there would be a decent end of The Pretender. Soon, with same cast, because the actors are getting older... I keep my fingers crossed!
  • Listen, I don't take much of my time to write about shows on T.v. because I have always been into just movies. However, I have been proved wrong on how I feel about T.v. shows. I have to admit that I got caught (in 2002), with this show since it was shown twice daily back then on TNT. I quickly became a loyal fan to what the creators were trying to convey... because this production is so much different than any other production I can relate to. I've got season four, and I can say that the creators have outdone themselves allowing the Center to twist all reality to a max.

Can fully relate to how the Center perverts all aspects to suit it's own evil ends.

Definitely, a must - watch . . . for the person who always thought they were different! People in bondage to the mundane. . .probably will not understand or be able to appreciate being brought to the reality that this production reveals.

C'mon, good people, it's time for justice and innocence to redeem this world. . . let's see how it's done. . .
  • mitpen30 November 2022
I remember watching this when it was on television from 1996-2000 when I was 10-14 years old.

I loved the premise. This is probably the first show that I truly got into&had to watch each episode every week. This is my first real fandom.

Years later I bought the dvds&finally saw the whole thing including the tv movies.

I love all of it but wish they had finished the series.

There was a myth that the writers wrote screenplays for season 5+ but never found them. It'd be great to someday see this show return even just as a single "final" season; but as actors get older it seems quite impossible.
  • The talented Michael T. Weiss is Jarod, a man who can become anyone he

wants to be, in order to save lives, or prevent disaster. In the first season, he escapes from the Centre and three workers, Miss Parker, Sydney, and Broots

are after him all through the series and he keeps going. The series was meant for adults and thus was a success for people over the age of eighteen. Great

action sequences and Michael T. Weiss was very very good as the title

character, coming a long way from "Days of Our Lives" while Andrea Parker was hot and sizzled as Miss Parker, a dark but light hearted female lead. But my

favorite was Patrick Bauchau as Sydney, whom would always be in contact with

Jarod and not let the Centre know about it! Too bad there was never a fifth

season as I would have like to see more!
  • The Pretender is a criminally underrated show. It is one of my all time favourites. The plots, characters, themes are all very intriguing. You can be anything you want to be-just look at Jarod!
