Many sailors claimed no line squall existed. The derecho line thunderstorm that struck the USA Eastern Seaboard on 29 June 2012 is the kind of "line squall", that wrecked the actual sailboat on which the plot of the film is based.
Captain Christopher "Skipper" Sheldon:
You can't run from the wind. You trim your sails, face the music, and keep going.
At the beginning of the film their is an establishing shot of Charles Gieg's (Scott Wolf) house which we are told is in Connecticut. The trees are full of Spanish moss which typically is not found north of Virginia and has never been found north of Delaware.
