When Merry and Pippin are talking about 2nd breakfast and an apple is thrown to them, Merry catches the first apple and walks off. Then a second apple hits Pippin and falls to his right. Immediately Pippin raises his left hand and an apple has appeared there. There would be no time to transfer the apple to his left hand even if he was able to catch it.
