While not a fan at all of the Blue Racer cartoons, 'Blue Racer Blues' and the previous cartoon 'Freeze a Jolly Good Fellow' were pleasant surprises. Despite not caring for Crazylegs Crane in the Tijuana Toads series and even more so in his own theatrical series, there was intrigue still in seeing how he would fare with Blue Racer. 'Snake Preview' is the second of three appearances of his in the series, but seeing as his role in 'Blue Aces Wild' was a very small one this felt more like his first appearance.
And a fairly lacklustre appearance too, as well as a lacklustre cartoon overall. Anybody that was pleasantly surprised by the series' high point 'Freeze a Jolly Good Fellow' would naturally hope that the improvement would continue, after all the Tijuana Toads cartoons (despite not caring overall for that series) got a little better briefly, but alas 'Snake Preview' is a return to the general mediocrity of most of the Blue Racer cartoons. Not terrible, but a long way from good.
'Snake Preview' isn't all bad. There are some nice colours and the same goes for Blue Racer's character animation (namely the facial expressions). Doug Goodwin's music is upbeat and characterful as ever and the theme tune is another infectious one.
Larry D. Mann does a good job as Blue Racer, with the voice suiting the character design and the character's characteristics more than ideally. The best character though is the crafty bee, who is quite a formidable match.
However, while Blue Racer has grown in personality he grew to be very samey as a character, very little variation from one cartoon to the other other than craftiness or feeling sympathy when too cruelly treated. 'Snake Preview' does use Crazylegs pretty poorly, he is underused here again and his personality is bland. Have always never cared for Mann's voice acting for Crazylegs, he just sounds too goofy and oafish and it doesn't fit Crazylegs' character design or the way he behaves.
Not much funny here, other than some amusing lines for Blue Racer, with it being quite silly, and nothing is original, pretty much all of it being stale retreads of already tried and tested gags. The story is very thin, lacks energy and gets very repetitive, everything that happens here is easily foreseeable quickly before they even happen. Most of the animation is flat and rushed-looking, the purposefully abstract style looking here simplistic. The chemistry doesn't really connect or make an awful lot of sense.
In conclusion, lacklustre. 4/10.
