It’s been two decades since an epic fantasy film made history at the Oscars, winning every category in which it was nominated, and three women set new records. There weren’t many surprises at the 76th Academy Awards, but there were some memorable moments. Billy Crystal hosted for his eighth time on February 29, 2004. Read on for Gold Derby’s Oscars flashback 20 years ago to 2004.
It was finally Peter Jackson‘s time as the third installment of his “Lord of the Rings” trilogy earned him a trio of awards. Despite numerous nominations, the first two films failed to make big showings; however, “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King” not only claimed Best Picture, but won all 11 categories in which it was nominated. It tied with “Ben-Hur” (1960) and “Titanic” (1998) for most wins in one ceremony, and holds the record for biggest sweep. It was the 10th film...

Cillian Murphy considers Red Eye to be a B-movie and believes he didn't give a nuanced performance. Despite Murphy's opinion, Red Eye is actually an underrated thriller with strong performances from both Murphy and Rachel McAdams. Critics praised the film upon its release, with Roger Ebert specifically noting Murphy's ability to avoid cheesiness and keep the movie grounded.
Although Cillian Murphy isn’t too fond of his 2005 psychological thriller Red Eye, the thriller co-starring Rachel McAdams is an underrated genre gem. Cillian Murphy has an impressive career. Since he first rose to prominence in the early ‘00s with roles in Disco Pigs, Intermission, 28 Days Later, and Cold Mountain, the star has gone on to headline both commercial blockbusters and acclaimed dramas. Two decades ago at this time, the Oscar race for Best Actor was shaping up to be a rather competitive one. We had no idea what we were in for. Allow me to backtrack just a bit.
Three-time previous nominee Sean Penn had taken an early lead for his role as a troubled ex-convict and grieving father in Clint Eastwood’s crime drama “Mystic River.” Then Bill Murray began to generate major buzz for his portrayal of an aging movie star in Sofia Coppola’s acclaimed Tokyo-set comedy “Lost in Translation.”
The Golden Globes did little to clarify things. Penn prevailed in the drama category while Murray picked up the comedy/musical award. The latter did arguably get a bit of a boost with his charming acceptance speech.
All eyes were then on the Screen Actors Guild Award, which many thought would serve as a tie-breaker. But in the ultimate awards twist,...

This year marks the 20th anniversary of The Return of the King, the final part of the Academy Award-winning The Lord of the Rings trilogy. Adapted from celebrated author J.R.R. Tolkien’s high fantasy novels of the same name, these films more than just introduced the iconic realm of Middle-earth to millions of fans around the world; they became legends in their own right. So much so, The Lord of the Rings has become a holiday staple celebrated by millions around the globe.
Indeed, despite being set in a world without the usual Yuletide trappings, this trilogy has quietly become something of a Christmas tradition, and an annual viewing appointment every December. Here’s how the films’ surprise connection with the holiday season began, why they’re so perfectly suited for the festive start of winter, and how The Hobbit trilogy only strengthened the association a decade later.

Taryn Manning’s audition for the Britney Spears starrer Crossroads was so good it made director Tamra Davis nervous.
“She was picking something on her arm, and it looked like it might start bleeding,” recalls Davis of a casting session for the 2002 road trip drama, written by soon-to-be TV mogul Shonda Rhimes. “I thought ‘Oh my, she’s too much, this girl.’ But at the same time, she was the girl.”
Manning was vying for the role of Mimi, a trailer park teen with dreams of moving to Los Angeles to make it as a singer. Manning so nailed the mannerisms and soul of a girl from the wrong side of the tracks who longed for stardom that Davis also felt confused. “I remember quietly telling [casting directors Kim Davis-Wagner and Justine Arteta] that while she was amazing, I needed a real actress. Jack Lemmon won for his supporting turn in “Mister Roberts” in 1956 before he took home Best Actor in 1974 for “Save the Tiger.”

Faraway Downs is a miniseries that adds 40 minutes of footage to the 2008 movie Australia, making it a more complete story. Nicole Kidman portrays Lady Sarah Ashley, who must save Faraway Downs from King Carney with the help of Nullah and The Drover. The show features a talented cast, including Hugh Jackman as The Drover and Brandon Walters as Nullah, and premiered on Hulu in November 2023.
Faraway Downs' romantic drama is driven by its well-written character, portrayed by a roster of well-known actors. Although Faraway Downs is a six-part miniseries, it premiered as a movie titled Australia in 2008. Even though Australia was not a critical success when it first released in the theaters, director Baz Luhrmann wanted to give it a second chance and complete its story by re-releasing it as a miniseries.
Despite being an episodic version of the 2008 movie, Faraway Downs has some original story elements, adding 40 minutes of footage to Australia.

The 1800s continue to be a fascinating era for movies, with Little Women being a highly regarded period drama that captured viewers' hearts. Films set in the 1800s can transport audiences back in time, allowing them to explore the technology, beliefs, and society of that era. There are numerous movies set in the 1800s across different genres, such as Sherlock Holmes, The Great Train Robbery, Amistad, Cold Mountain, The Lighthouse, The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly, The Elephant Man, Pride & Prejudice, The Man Who Would Be King, Les Misérables, and Nosferatu.
Before her amazing success with Barbie, Greta Gerig delivered one of the best movies set in the 1800s with Little Women. Historically accurate war movies gain respect from historians and soldiers for their attention to detail and portrayal of real-life events. Saving Private Ryan's D-Day landing sequence is praised for its intense and realistic depiction, earning praise from veterans for capturing the experience accurately. Cold Mountain's attention to detail, including accurate flags and trench warfare, contributes to its authenticity and makes it more realistic for viewers.
War movies are often judged by their commitment to historical accuracy, and the best war movies can win praise from historians, or even soldiers who lived out the events being depicted on screen. War movies focus on real-life stories more than most other genres, so it's always interesting to see how well they portray historical events. Some movies don't pay much attention to the finer details, but inaccurate war movies can often be distracting. Deviations from historical fact can ruin a movie.

Emma Thompson has turned in a host of eclectic, effective, excellent performances throughout her illustrious career. She started out with period dramas such as “Howards End” and “The Remains of the Day” before later moving into fantasy with roles in “Nanny McPhee” and “Harry Potter.” Add to that top-tier performances in the likes of “Sense and Sensibility,” “Saving Mr. Banks,” “Cruella,” and “Good Luck to You, Leo Grande,” and you’ve got one hell of a performer.
However, Thompson has stated herself that the role she gets the most praise for is actually… “Love Actually.” The classic Richard Curtis Christmas movie, which turns 20 this year, tells the interconnected love stories of eight different sets of people with Thompson delivering the most emotional and heartbreaking storyline of all of them. Emma Stone won the Best Actress Oscar in 2017 for her role as an actress trying to make it big in Damien Chazelle‘s “La La Land.” Stone has also earned two Best Supporting Actress bids, the first in 2015 for “Birdman” and the second for “The Favourite” in 2019. She reteams with the latter’s director, Yorgos Lanthimos, for Searchlight Pictures’ “Poor Things.” The film, which is out in US theaters on Dec. 8, follows Stone as Bella Baxter — a woman brought back to life by a scientist (Willem Dafoe) and subsequently goes on a journey of self-discovery, meeting a variety of people along the way including a lawyer (Mark Ruffalo) and a potential suitor (Ramy Youssef).
Stone’s performance is remarkable here, as many critics have noted.
Nick Schager (The Daily Beast) declared that Stone will “blow your mind” in the movie, writing: “Nothing overshadows Stone’s odd, amusing and affecting performance as Bella,...

The following article contains spoilers for "Killers of the Flower Moon."
Martin Scorsese's "Killers of the Flower Moon" hits theaters this week, and if you've seen it, you know that the cast is astonishing. Lily Gladstone turns in a powerful performance as Mollie Burkhart, an Osage woman whose family is part of the horrifying murders of tribespeople to gain their money and profit rights after oil is discovered on their land. The Osage Nation became wealthy, and white men used a number of underhanded and despicable ways to get their hands on the money. That includes the plotting of a series of murders by William King Hale (Robert De Niro) and his nephew Ernest Burkhart (Leonardo DiCaprio).
Based on the true story of the Osage murders in Oklahoma at the beginning of the 20th century, the cast includes Jesse Plemons, Tantoo Cardinal, John Lithgow, Brendan Fraser, Cara Jade Myers,...

Historian Garry Adelman praises Cold Mountain for its dramatic power but criticizes its inaccuracy in depicting a crucial scene from the Civil War. Adelman points out that the film leaves out the detail of a Union bomb not initially going off, requiring a brave soldier to relight the fuse. The film's portrayal of the "turkey shoot" scene, where Union soldiers become trapped in their own crater, is deemed exaggerated and not entirely accurate by Adelman.

The Rise of the Guardians voice cast is full of recognizable A-list actors. Released in 2012, Rise of the Guardians is a DreamWorks animated feature that revolves around the Avengers of childhood heroes: Santa Claus, the Tooth Fairy, the Easter Bunny, and the Sandman. The Guardians reluctantly team up with Jack Frost to prevent the villainous Pitch Black from destroying the world with darkness. The screenplay by Pulitzer Prize-winning Rabbit Hole playwright David Lindsay-Abaire is adapted from the book series The Guardians of Childhood and William Joyce’s short film The Man in the Moon.

Character actor Richard Brake has a lot of success in his career, racking up almost 90 screen credits over the last thirty years. Those credits include roles in Cold Mountain, Batman Begins, Doom, Munich, and Hannibal Rising, so he started getting cast in major productions with some frequency rather early on. But it’s interesting to see how much more prolific he has gotten since playing The Night King in Game of Thrones and Doom-Head in Rob Zombie’s 31. About half of his credits have come just in the seven years since 31 was released. Next up for him is The Gates, where he co-stars with John Rhys-Davies of the Indiana Jones and Lord of the Rings franchises (in addition to over 250 other projects). The film is scheduled to receive a digital and VOD release in the US and Canada on June 27th, and a trailer for it can be seen in the embed above.

While preparing to play King Henry VIII in Firebrand, Jude Law wore a perfume to replicate the smell of sitting on a different kind of throne.
As reported by Men's Health, Law spoke at a presser following a screening of Firebrand at the Cannes Film Festival and described how he prepared to play the former King of England. One of these preparations involved wearing perfume that smelled like feces. According to Law, the perfume contained fecal matter, blood, and sweat. "I read several interesting accounts that you could smell Henry three rooms away," he said. "His leg was rotting so badly. He hid it with rose oil... I thought it would have a great impact if I smelt awful."

For most actors, winning an Oscar is seen as the absolute pinnacle of a Hollywood career. For a select group of performers, though, one simply isn’t enough.
There have been 44 different actors to have won multiple awards, the first coming in 1937 when Luise Rainer became the original two-time Oscar darling.
Some manage to win every time they are nominated. Others, such as the inimitable Meryl Streep, have careers peppered with nominations, winning only when the so-called narrative dictates.
In 2021, Anthony Hopkins took home his second statuette, for his role in The Father. The year before, Renée Zellweger took home her second Oscar after playing Judy Garland in Judy.
In 2020, Mahershala Ali picked up his second Best Supporting Actor Oscar for Best Picture winner Green Book. He previously won for Moonlight in 2017.
Here are the actors with the most Oscar wins.

Any belief that the Oscars award the right films, directors and performances has faded over the years.

Almost every year there’s at least one actor who sweeps through all the major precursors prior to the Oscars. But this year none of the four acting categories will have had a sweeper through the entire season. The last time a scenario like this played out was actually way back in 2002.
SEECan Andrea Riseborough (‘To Leslie’) pull a last-minute Best Actress Oscar upset?

Look at any list of 2022’s best movies and you’ll see The Banshees of Inisherin near the top. Martin McDonagh’s latest film uses the fallout between the best friends Pádraic (Colin Farrell) and Colm (Brendan Gleeson) to examine masculinity, the cost of ambition, and the best way to live a life. The film’s deftness with these topics (and its ability to do so in a way that is often funny) and the environment that surrounds these characters are excellent, but McDonagh’s writing was not always so clear. At a recent awards show, he recalled one of Inisherin’s stars giving him a less-than-stellar review of the original script.

Any belief that the Oscars award the right films, directors and performances has faded over the years.
While every ceremony has a smattering of correct decisions – trophies handed to the right people for the right films – more often than not, the pervading feeling is one of pessimism caused by a deluge of undeserving recipients.
The Oscars are a far cry from what they claim to be – a celebration of the previous year’s cinematic offerings. But his does not stop people from trawling the internet the following morning in the hope that maybe, just maybe, the winners list impresses rather than disappoints.
With the 2023 ceremony taking place in March, we have highlighted 17 films that really should not have been awarded Oscars.

The BAFTA Awards just gave its acting prizes to Cate Blanchett (“TÁR“), Austin Butler (“Elvis”) and “The Banshees of Inisherin” duo Kerry Condon and Barry Keoghan, but we may have a different set of winners at Sunday’s Screen Actors Guild Awards. In fact, completely different if our odds prove to be correct. At the moment, Michelle Yeoh (“Everything Everywhere All at Once”), Brendan Fraser (“The Whale”), Angela Bassett (“Black Panther: Wakanda Forever”) and Ke Huy Quan (“Everything Everywhere All at Once”) are the projected champs, which would mean no overlap with the Brits. But how many times have SAG and BAFTA gone 0 for 4?
Since BAFTA became an Oscar precursor 22 years ago, the answer to that is zero. Even with various snubs, ineligible films and category messiness — Jennifer Connelly (2001’s “A Beautiful Mind”) losing in lead at SAG and winning in supporting at BAFTA; Alicia Vikander (2015’s “The Danish Girl...

Hot off her 2022 Best Film Actress SAG Award victory for “The Eyes of Tammy Faye,” Jessica Chastain is now in the running for the organization’s Best TV Movie/Miniseries Actress prize as the star of Showtime’s “George and Tammy.” This would be her third SAG Award win in as many categories, as she achieved her first one as an ensemble member of the 2011 film “The Help.” It would also make her only the fourth person to ever pull off back-to-back solo SAG Award wins for two different performances.
The special consecutive champions club Chastain is looking to join was formed in 2000 by Angelina Jolie, who was honored that year for her supporting turn in the film “Girl, Interrupted” immediately after her TV movie performance in “Gia” was lauded by the acting guild. She has since been followed by Renée Zellweger and Viola Davis.

Few people know this, but Renee Zellweger starred in the most overlooked entry in the Texas Chainsaw Massacre franchise, right before she established herself as one of the best actresses of her generation. Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Next Generation takes place after Leatherface: The Texas Chainsaw Massacre III and only briefly touches the events that happened in the previous sequels. After the third movie's bad reception, 1995's The Next Generation was also unanimously destroyed by the critics, bringing the franchise to a halt: the next movie came out eight years later and ended up being a remake, telling the story of Leatherface and his family from a fresh start.
Zellweger took part in the popular slasher franchise hoping to break through as an actress. She had previously appeared in two movies that would become cult classics — Dazed and Confused, which featured many future stars, and Reality Bites — but only in minor roles.
