Believe it or not, Aronofsky's Noah got an award nomination this morning. It didn't land a nod in any of the major categories, but it did receive a nomination for Best Song for Patti Smith's "Mercy Is." That's probably the biggest honor the film will receive (perhaps it could get an Oscar nomination in the same category), but that film is in the past for director Darren Aronofsky now, and the filmmaker behind The Fountain and Black Swan is lining up new projects. He's already working on an adaptation of the MaddAddam trilogy at HBO, but Tracking Board reports his company Protozoa is adapting the book The Good Nurse. Read on! Update! We've been informed by publicity that Aronofsky is attached to produce with first refusal to direct, so the project is still early in development and there is no assurance that Aronofsky is actually going to direct, but he might.

Director Darren Aronofsky is moving from mastering the scale of a great Biblical flood in his 2014 drama Noah to taking on The Year of the Flood. The Black Swan director has been tapped to possibly helm a drama series on HBO, based on an acclaimed trilogy of dystopian “speculative” sci-fi novels from author Margaret Atwood. Aronofsky is already signed on to executive produce MaddAddam through his Protozoa Pictures banner, and he definitely has the credentials to direct as well.
The trilogy of novels include Atwood’s Oryx and Crake (2003), The Year of the Flood (2009) and MaddAddam (2013). The series takes place during the mid-21st century, where corporate villains reign, governments have fallen, and society has embraced genetic modifications. Much of the story occurs after a Waterless Flood (i.e. a man-made plague) has wiped out most of civilization. The characters focused on in Atwood’s novels consist of some of...

Exclusive: HBO has put in development drama series MaddAddam, executive produced by Oscar-nominated Black Swan helmer Darren Aronofsky through his Protozoa Pictures banner. The project, based on Margaret Atwood’s book trilogy Oryx and Crake (2003), Year Of The Flood (2009), and MaddAddam (2013), is being developed as a potential directing vehicle for Aronofsky. MaddAddam marks the first project to come out of the three-year first-look deal the filmmaker and his Protozoa Pictures inked with HBO in January. The story in the MaddAddam books, part of Atwood’s self-described genre of “speculative fiction,” is set in the mid-21st century in a world where corporations have taken over for governments and the genetic modification of organisms is perversely ubiquitous. It centers on the events before and after a Waterless Flood that wipes out almost all of the world’s population and follows an extensive cast of characters, including those responsible for the apocalypse...

"I'm not alone." Paramount has unveiled yet another brand new international trailer for Darren Aronofsky's Biblical epic Noah to compliment the international trailer that came with the debut of the first theatrical trailer. Russell Crowe stars as Noah in the classic story of Noah's Ark, also featuring Jennifer Connelly, Anthony Hopkins, Emma Watson and Logan Lerman in the cast. There's a few bits of new footage in this, but most more of the same gritty action and dialogue from the first two trailers. Nonetheless, as a huge Aronofsky fan I am very excited to see this. I'm hoping it lives up to high expectations. We'll find out soon. Here's the second international trailer for Darren Aronofsky's Noah, found on YouTube (via SlashFilm): In Darren Aronofsky's take on the Biblical tale, Noah (Russell Crowe) suffers visions of an apocalyptic deluge, and takes measures to protect his family from the coming flood.

Last week, director Darren Aronofsky officially wrapped what is easily the largest production of his career, "Noah." And with the film not due until March 28, 2014, so begins a long fifteen month wait for the movie. So what can we do until then? How about taking a quick trip back in time... The director's very early, 1994 short "No Time" has made its way online. It's one of three short films he directed as part of the masters program at the AFI Conservatory (the other two were "Protozoa" -- also the name of his production company -- and "Fortune Cookie"). There's not much other detail about it online, but it's a comedy, and it's certainly very different from anything he would go on to do in his professional career. Yes, longtime collaborate Matthew Libatique is behind the camera, and it's an interesting look at the formative work of Aronofsky. Give it a spin below.

Don't worry, there's no actual stealing involved here, it's all in order. If you remember, we covered a few news stories on a project called The Tiger that Darren Aronofsky was developing to direct. The story is indeed about a man-eating tiger attacking the inhabitants of a remote Siberian village. Well, since Aronofsky has gone on to build Noah's Ark instead, the project has found a new director - Michael R. Roskam. Roskam is the Belgian filmmaker who made the Oscar nominated film Bullhead last year, which rocked me to my core and launched the career of actor Matthias Schoenaerts. He's a hell of a good filmmaker to watch. The report confirms that Brad Pitt, who was attached to star, is still involved. Darren Aronofsky is out! According to news released today, Aronofsky has changed his mind about directing the 20th Century Fox sequel The Wolverine due to the fact that it would keep him out of the country too long.

I knew it wouldn't be long before we saw Darren Aronofsky back at it again, even if it is only in a producer capacity. Just as the filmmaker had decided to take a break from unleashing upon the world another punishing portrayal of psychological strife and human misery -- he's directing The Wolverine, shooting this April -- he's now ensured that his name will be attached to at least one movie fitting that mold in the coming years. That film is Intricate, a "dark story of a drug underworld". The picture centers around a promising young athlete who gets caught up in the drug trade in '90s New York. Directing the project is Brad Furman, who's moved his way up from serving as an assistant to Julia Roberts on Erin Brockovich and The Mexican to recently helming the soon-to-be-released legal thriller The Lincoln Lawyer. One week before his first significant studio effort The Lincoln Lawyer opens and director Brad Furman has found himself a follow-up gig with Black Swan’s Oscar nominated director Darren Aronofsky, producer Scott Franklin and their Protozoa Picturs banner.
24 Frames say Furman is to direct Intricate, a drug drama based on the true story of “a highly touted college basketball recruit who gets involved in the drug underworld after his hoops career doesn’t pan out. At the time, the New York narcotics trade is rife with violence and connections to the burgeoning rap industry.”
When you remember that Aronofsky came onto the scene with the drug drama Requiem For A Dream, which rivals Trainspotting for it’s glorification & at the same time harrowing depiction of substance abuse, you can see why he would have interest, albeit only producing, in bringing this tale to the big screen.
No screenwriter has been locked in just yet.

Now, with a burgeoning new career as a hot screenwriter, Heyman is about to get to work on Age of Rage, an original sci-fi project from an idea by Spidey director Marc Webb.Webb is producing, along with his (500) Days of Summer cohort Mason Novick, and Heyman's task is to put meat on the bones of an idea involving a post-apocalyptic society where all the adults are dead, leaving the kids to build a new civilisation. All kinds of echoes in there, from Logan's Run (where life ends at thirty) and Children of the Corn (kids kill all adults, life ends at eighteen), to Village of the Damned (creepy...

The Oscar nominations have been announced and it’s great to see Inception, Toy Story 3, Alice in Wonderland, Harry Potter, How to Train Your Dragon, Iron Man 2, Tangled, Tron, and Wolfman being honored this year. This year’s nominations hit the familiar marks that the sci-fi genre is most associated with in the categories of special effects, art direction, animation, costuming, and make-up.
Inception is the most visibly well-rounded in achievements in film-making and leads the sci-fi/fantasy pack with eight nominations, though director Christopher Nolan was snubbed in the Best Director nominations. Toy Story 3 follows with an impressive five nominations, and both films garnered nominations in the Best Picture category.
Check out the breakdown of the nominations by film, followed by a listing of all nominations by category. [Sci-fi nominees in bold]

"Black Swan" will be released December 3, 2010.
"Darren’s vision has brought audiences some of the most original and memorable stories and characters in recent motion picture history," said Fox Searchlight's Steve Gilula and Nancy Utley. "We can’t wait to see what else Darren has in store for us.

Darren Aronofsky has spoken a little about 'The Wolverine' to superherohype, 'The Wolverine' deals with Logans escapades in Japan:
"There's all the samurai elements that are really exciting," he told us. "I'm a big fan of Japanese movies, we're going to try to have a good time." Aronofsky confirmed that he'll be casting a lot of Japanese actors, but is still unsure whether they'll be speaking in Japanese or English. "It's still under discussion, we'll see what happens," he said about that.
Not everyone was a fan of Gavin Hood's previous movie X-Men Origins: Wolverine, which partly suffered from nearly half a dozen writers (not all credited) being involved with the screenplay, but clearly, this movie should be different going by what we were told. "Chris McQuarrie wrote a great screenplay. We're trying to get it into a slightly better place but he's working on it,...

It’s good times for the most exciting film-maker working in America. Darren Aronofsky’s magnificent Black Swan is released next month in the Us and January in the UK.
It’s my official ‘Film of the Year’ even though I saw it at the gala UK screening during the London Film Festival. Some might say it’s cheating since it’s only played the festival circuit but what the hey! You can read my review here.
After being intoxicated with cinematic excellence by Black Swan, there’s still the phenomenal news the director is making an X-Men movie when he shoots The Wolverine next year.
In an official press release today, Fox studio announced the director and his company – Protozoa Pictures – had signed a two-year deal. Below is the full statement:

Three cheers for Darren! Or maybe just two for two years? It was announced today (read the press release) that Fox Filmed Entertainment has signed one of my very favorite filmmakers, Darren Aronofsky, and his production company Protozoa Pictures to a two-year, overall deal. Under the pact, Protozoa will develop and produce films for both 20th Century Fox and Fox Searchlight Pictures. Ever since The Wrestler sold to Searchlight a few years back, he's been situated well within the studio, and I've seen him conversing openly with Fox head Tom Rothman at parties. It's obvious they like him or they wouldn't have him for Wolverine. Aronofsky's debut picture under the pact will be The Wolverine, starring Hugh Jackman. Written by Oscar-winner Christopher McQuarrie, the film is scheduled to begin production in April next year. As if it wasn't already officially official, now it is officially official: 20th Century Fox has confirmed that Darren Aronofsky is directing "The Wolverine," the second solo movie starring Hugh Jackman as the claw-popping Canadian mutant.
If you're wondering why it took so long for Fox to confirm Aronofsky's involvement in the Marvel Comics adaptation, it appears that there's a perfectly good explanation.
According to a press release, Aronofsky and his Protozoa Pictures production company have agreed to a two-year overall deal with the studio, which sees Protozoa developing and producing films for 20th Century Fox and Fox Searchlight Pictures. Aronofsky's first priority, of course, is directing "The Wolverine," which heads into production in April next year.
