Though he’s most well-known for revolutionizing the zombie genre with 1968’s Night of the Living Dead, George A. Romero also filmed a unique take on vampires with 1977’s Martin. Following the titular character’s vampire-like serial killer streak in Pittsburgh, the movie features a memorable soundtrack that’s now being released on a limited edition vinyl with new artwork and liner notes:
Press Release - “February 2nd 2015, NYC, NY – Ship to Shore PhonoCo. announced today that the score from George A. Romero’s Martin, once named “one of the top 100 coolest soundtracks of all time” by Mojo Magazine, will be available on vinyl for the first time since its original release in 1978.
“Donald Rubinstein contributes a haunting, melancholy score punctuated with sudden, passionate riffs. It is the perfect accompaniment to this tale of lost souls in a barren, nearly post-apocalyptic environment.” – Roy Frumkes, producer of Street Trash and director of Document of the Dead.

Growing up in a small town in California in the 1980′s and into the 90′s with nothing to do, I existed on a steady diet of TV and books. Street Trash is one of those movies that would show up occasionally and piqued my interest because it seemed like something of the Troma variety. In fact, one could look at it as the best film that studio never made. I do recall the film looking rather grungy and beat up, so seeing it uncut and presented so beautifully was a bit of a shock. Who knew this little movie could look this fantastic? Let’s take a trip to the junk yard, shall we?
The biggest bum fest this side of John Waters’ Desperate Living, Street Trash tells the happy tale of a liquor store owner just trying to make a living and a group of local homeless people trying...

We reported that Roy Frumkes (Document of the Dead, Street Trash) owned the rights to Arthur Crabtree's 1958 creature feature Fiend Without a Face way back in 2010. Finally an update on it and more has come.
"I’ve wanted to do this film for 40 years, so I already had it all in my head, and it wasn’t hard to write. What I didn’t have was the technical information; I’m no science buff. Now I’m interviewing scientists, getting the technology straight,” Frumkes tells Fango. "It’s set in a think tank in the Berkshires, and it’s not about young people. It’s a mature film, but it has a Street Trash sensibility, so the people who like my work will not be disappointed.”
The site also scored a still from a fund-raising trailer Frumkes shot for his Fiend flick with director Franco Frassetti, which features Ursula...

Synapse Films president Don May Jr. wrote a detailed update on the site's blog explaining that their long-awaited Blu-ray “Meltdown Edition” release of James Muro's 1987 cult classic Street Trash, originally slated for June 11th, has been delayed slightly due to technical issues in the restoration and HD remastering process. Street Trash was transferred in high-definition from the original camera negative, which had many physical flaws to be addressed – flaws which were not visible in the earlier standard definition DVD release – and May says those issues were not addressed to his satisfaction by the authoring facility involved. “For me personally, this project is currently in a state that I refuse to release,” he writes. “I have discussed it with my business partner, Jerry Chandler, and we both agree that the delay, to fix the issues at hand, is more important than to release a botched product to our fans, and to the marketplace,...

You know… George Romero doesn’t get enough credit for inventing the modern zombie movie. Oh wait, yeah he does. In fact if there’s one thing you can be certain of, it’s that George will get tied to any discussion on the zed words that you’d care to read. In 1985 Director Roy Frumkes put together a documentary focused in on Romero’s second zombie opus, Dawn of the Dead and exposed a small but dedicated audience to life behind the camera of the dead. While it’s been over thirty years since Dawn of the Dead was lensed and just under 25 years since this powerful look into zombie filmmaking first made reared its rotten head, the story is just as relevant, the revelations behind the creation of the modern zombie movie movement are powerful and the story is worth revisiting. Thus Synapse Films has sought to bring...

Whether you are a Blu Ray junkie who requires the highest defintion possible for your rare acquisitions or you’re just a fan boy of the man who made zombies cool, Synapse has a product that is certain to be for you. Document of the Dead is coming out on a Blu Ray/DVD combo back with both full length version of the doc on DVD and original release on Blu Ray. Once in a blue moon, a movie comes along that provides like no other. Mafioso hell-bent on burying his (even more hilarious!) entrance usher, a junkyard Colonel...

New ghouls on the block, Crystal Plumage Films, are screening a 35mm print of cult classic Street Trash on Saturday, November 6th in Metuchen, NJ. Not only is this print a personal copy of the film's writer/producer, Roy Frumkes, but he’ll also be attending the event as a co-host and then signing autographs after the Q&A.
In keeping with Crystal Plumage Films’ Diy horror stylings, they have tasked a local artist to create limited hand-numbered silk-screened posters, which will be available for sale at the event (see it below). But wait, there’s more: For those lucky kids that show up, there will be a raffle with many possible splendid prizes: Street Trash t-shirts as well as Street Trash and Document of the Dead DVDs. Free things, my monster kids! That alone should motivate the tri-state horror crowd to come to Central Jersey this weekend. Hell I’ll even drive you.

Arrow Video does not limit their considerable energies to only Italian masters. They seek out the blood wherever it may be found. Including my home turf, the good old USA. In choosing an American master to champion, Arrow Video did the wise thing and picked George A. Romero, father the the zombie film, himself. In the USA we've had dozens upon dozens of releases of Romero's Dead series, but they'd not been treated as well by the UK.
The USA got Anchor Bay's Dawn of the Dead Ultimate Edition years back, this included all three common versions of the zombie masterpiece on DVD. Arrow Video decided it was time that the UK, and the world, got a competing release. Arrow Video's Dawn of the Dead Blu-ray set features the theatrical cut (Romero's preferred version) in HD, as well as the extended "Director's Cut" version, and the Argento European cut...

Remakes are something we as movie fans have come to expect from Hollywood. Why think up something original when you can use a tried and true story that has name recognition and an already built in audience? This time though, a classic Criterion release is getting the remake treatment. Arthur Crabtree’s Fiend Without a Face (Spine #92) is getting the chance to shine again on the big screen by none other than genre filmmaker Roy Frumkes, who made the fantastic documentary Document of the Dead, about the making of George A. Romero’s Dawn of the Dead.
Frumkes has been friends with the original producer of the classic sci-fi/horror hybrid, Richard Gordon and struck a deal with him to remake the film, but he isn’t going about it in the typical fashion. “…I set my own deadlines: The option started January 1, and I gave myself two months to...

Arthur Crabtree's 1958 creature feature Fiend Without a Face is such a film of its time, would a remake work today? Roy Frumkes thinks so. He tells Fangoria that he optioned the rights to the original. He's got a script almost ready to go and by the end of the year he'll possibly have interested investors. Right now, he says, it's all about researching the scientific aspect of the film which he goes into detail about here . Frumkes directed the Dawn of the Dead documentary, Document of the Dead , and penned Street Trash . The original film is set on an American base in Canada where an Army Major is tasked with investigating a series of deaths. He comes to discover that the murderous culprits are invisible brain creatures - the results of an experiment in telekinesis....

Although I’m generally not a fan of opportunistic directors who revisit previous successes for new material once the creative well has run dry, Greg Lamberson’s follow-up to his gory 1988 cult classic “Slime City” has the potential to be something special. “Slime City Massacre,” which stars Debbie Rochon in addition to newcomers Jennifer Bihl and Kealan Patrick Burke, takes the concept touched upon in the first film and cranks it up several disgusting notches, which, if you’re going to a sequel 21 years after the fact, is the smart thing to do. The film also features cameos from genre favorites Lloyd Kaufman and “Document of the Dead” director Roy Frumkes, just to name a few. As a fan of the original, as well an unabashed follower of 80’s splatter cinema, I’m all sorts of excited. And because Lamberson is well-versed in the ways of self-promotion, there’s always...

Filmmaker Gregory Lamberson passed along an update on Slime City Massacre, the sequel to his 1988 flick Slime City, which is gearing up to shoot next month. He additionally sent some photos of a makeup FX test session with actress Jennifer Bihl and a postapocalyptic concept image; you can see those below.
“I developed this project simultaneously with another one called Deadly Rites,” Lamberson says. “I suspected that the executive producer on Deadly Rites was jerking my chain, and when my suspicion proved correct, I had Slime City Massacre ready to go. I knew that the only way I was going to get another feature off the ground was to say, ‘I’m going to make this film come hell or high water. Somehow I’ll raise the money and begin production on July 11.’ I was only off by one day—we’re shooting on July 10!”
