  • I recently watched Gullah Gullah Island and have mixed feelings about it. On one hand, I appreciated the show's attempt to celebrate Gullah culture and incorporate it into its themes and stories. The music and dancing were fun and engaging, and I appreciated the show's efforts to teach young viewers about different aspects of life on an island.

On the other hand, I found some aspects of the show to be dated and cheesy. The acting and dialogue were often over-the-top and unrealistic, and some jokes and gags fell flat. Additionally, the show's production values were only sometimes up to par, and some special effects and puppetry could have been better.

Overall, I would give Gullah Gullah Island a 6 out of 10. While I appreciate the show's cultural significance and educational value, some aspects are lacking in quality and entertainment value.
  • I can remember sitting down and watching this show with my daughter everyday, as she would not let me do her hair until she saw how the girls on this show looked! Always funny and thought provoking (even for small children), this show stands out for me because it featured real people, rather than cartoon characters. This give my daughter a real sense of what the message of each show was, plus she learned that people of different ethnicities can live together and share as well.

She especially loved it when Abuelo was on the show, as her own grandfather died before she was born! I had hoped to be able to take her to one of live shows, but they never came to our city! Thanks Ron and Natalie, for making my child's first years that much more magical!!
  • I too, watched this with my daughter! We were living in North Carolina at the time, and it really piqued my interest in Gullah culture, since it was so close by. The show was so positive the kids were real and fun, the parents so smiley and happy, and who didn't love Binyah Binyah polliwog! My daughter loved the bright colors of the set and clothing that the cast wore. I am so happy to see that the Daises are still married. The show had such a good vibe surrounding it that we couldn't help but get caught up in it! Our cable company airs reruns of this wonderful show on a kids channel. Definitely one of the better children's programs of the 1990's. Thanks Ron and Natalie for the great entertainment!
  • Allegra's Window, Gullah Gullah Island, and Little Bear are the three original Nick Jr shows and since I've already reviewed Little Bear and Allegra's Window, so it only made sense to review Gullah Gullah Island as well. While I loved this show and Allegra's Window as a small child, I had forgotten about both for a long time before recently rediscovering them via YouTube, another reason to review it after reviewing Allegra's Window. The show stars an African- American family living on a fun-filled island off the coast of South Carolina along with all their friends and neighbours. Just for the record, I know absolutely nothing about the Gullah culture but revisiting this nice show has my curiosity pique. I remember especially liking Binyah Binyah and Abuelito. The parents are so sweet and loving, the kids so positive and fun, Abuelito is a total sweetheart, and who could resist Binyah Binyah Polliwog? A perfect 10/10.
