Country legend Loretta Lynn was a prolific songwriter, undeniably. But not everyone liked to hear what she had to say in her honest, woman-centered songs — especially in the ’60s. Country radio stations outright banned a relatively small number of her tunes for being too controversial, not that it bothered her too much.
Here’s a look at why Lynn believed that happened and why it didn’t worry her regarding their chart performance. Plus, our picks for three of her most honest banned songs.
Loretta Lynn | Cooper Neill/Getty Images Why country stations banned Loretta Lynn’s songs, in her words
In Lynn’s 90-year life, she wrote hundreds of songs. Many of those she recorded for release, and 16 went to number one.
In a 1987 interview with the San Diego Union, she noted country stations banned eight. But it was a good sign. “As soon as I heard one of my songs got banned,...

Women supporting women was the main topic of conversation Wednesday night at the Tennessee premiere of Lifetime’s new film, “Patsy & Loretta,” held south of Nashville at the Franklin Theater. Starring Megan Hilty (“Smash”) as Patsy Cline and Jessie Mueller (Tony-nominated for “Waitress” and a winner for “Beautiful”) as Loretta Lynn — pictured above, with their wax counterparts — the film shines a spotlight on the friendship that formed between them before Cline’s untimely death in a plane crash in 1963.
Director Callie Khouri, the Oscar-winning writer of “Thelma and Louise” and creator of the ABC/Cmt series “Nashville,” has a history of creating powerful narratives around strong women. “I think the story of women’s friendships has never been told in enough depth,” the filmmaker told Variety at the premiere. “For women to be helping each other back when everybody thought that there was only one slot, to see somebody...

Todd Phillips’ R-rated DC villain movie Joker arrived on tracking today with an indexed first choice among all audiences in the low 20s among moviegoers that exceeded a mix of both superhero movies and R-rated fare including Batman v. Superman, Suicide Squad, It, It Chapter Two, Logan, Venom, Halloween, Us, John Wick Chapter 3 and more. That’s a huge number and speaks to Warner Bros.’ cool, hip positioning of this very dark take on the most notorious villain in the Batman canon, plus the great critical momentum that Joker has accumulated coming out of the fall film festival season, winning the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival, notching a 78% fresh Rotten Tomatoes score out of Tiff along with Joaquin Phoenix solidifying himself as the leading best actor contender this awards season.

For the finale of the Loretta Lynn birthday concert in Nashville on Monday night, the majority of the all-star cast returned to the stage to sing “Coal Miner’s Daughter,” a motley crew of Tanya Tucker, Brandi Carlile and Dennis Quaid all gathered around the guest of honor. It was a tenuous moment, with the soon-to-be 87-year-old Lynn emphatically shaking off her sister Crystal Gayle’s overture for her to sing her signature song. “I don’t wanna,” Lynn said.
But then, at the start of the second verse, Lynn seized the moment.

Since any New York City cinephile has a nearly suffocating wealth of theatrical options, we figured it’d be best to compile some of the more worthwhile repertory showings into one handy list. Displayed below are a few of the city’s most reliable theaters and links to screenings of their weekend offerings — films you’re not likely to see in a theater again anytime soon, and many of which are, also, on 35mm. If you have a chance to attend any of these, we’re of the mind that it’s time extremely well-spent.

Looks like Miranda Lambert is still grieving the end of her marriage to Blake Shelton. The country singer took to Instagram on Thursday to share a new, cryptic photo while spending some time in New York City. In the pic, the "Mama's Broken Heart" singer is dressed in a black lace dress as she lies on the ground next to graffiti that reads "Protect Yo Heart." Her short platinum blonde tresses are swept across her face as she looks towards the words. "I don't normally lay on the sidewalk in NYC....Words move me....words make me move. #NYC," she posted with the snap. This isn't the first time Lambert has not-so-subtly addressed her split from the "Sangria" singer. Earlier this week, the blonde beauty took the stage at the Acm Honors awards where she belted out Loretta Lynn's controversial divorce song, "Rated X," after presenting the country icon with the Crystal Milestone award.

Miranda Lambert continues to pour her heart out onstage as she recovers from her split from Blake Shelton. Dressed in a hot pink halter skater dress with black trimming, she performed Loretta Lynn's 1972 song "Rated X," which is about divorce, as part of a tribute to the country music icon at the 2015 Acm Honors on Tuesday. The track contains lyrics such as, "Well if you've been a married woman / and things didn't seem to work out / Divorce is the key to bein' loose and free / So you're gonna be talked about." "She sang songs that were not necessarily appropriate to sing at times, like this for me," Lambert told the audience. "So,...

How I Became The 007 Of Covert Forbidden Film Viewing

For those of us who grew up in the suburbs in the pre-home video, pre-cable TV and pre-Netflix coupons 1970s and early ‘80s, there were few dangerous pleasures as heady as sneaking into an R-rated movie at the local multiplex. The multiplex cinema was a ‘70s phenomenon that made regulating children’s viewing habits infinitely more difficult than the old days of stand-alone, single screen theaters. Ironically, the new freedom that filmmakers enjoyed with the advent of the MPAA rating system in late 1968 was almost in perfect synch with the rise of multi-screen cinemas. Some things do happen for a reason.

If there's one thing Paul Verhoeven's original "Robocop" is famous for, it's the level of violence. Rated X, it was ultimately edited down to an R and is still considered one of the more brutally violent films of the 1980s.
Next week's upcoming remake by filmmaker Jose Padilha is a different story - it's PG-13. It gets away with a lot for a PG-13 film, yet that lighter rating means many are still highly suspicious regarding the movie and its potential quality. The film's star Joel Kinnaman recently spoke with Collider and explained why he thinks the lighter rating works in this case:
"After seeing what we got away with with PG-13 that battle became quite irrelevant... The violence of the of the original RoboCop was so much aligned with Verhoeven’s cinematic tone and his comedic tone, and our film is carrying Jose's tone which he’s a completely different filmmaker,...

Remember when Robert Rodriguez and Tarantino made "Grindhouse," complete with fake trailers by other horror/action directors? Well, Rodriguez's latest short film is a little like that, but in spaaaace!
"Machete Kills Again... In Space" actually played as a trailer in theaters before "Machete Kills," which you may or may not have seen. (Judging by box office returns, not everyone was so hot on seeing Mel Gibson and Charlie Sheen in the same movie, or at all.) Some speculate it could be turned into a feature film, much as the trailers for "Grindhouse" launched Machete himself, but who knows?
In any case, this little trailer is entertaining in its own right, with riffs on "Star Wars," plus plenty of guns, explosions, and "space babes." This includes "Machete" stars Michelle Rodriguez, Alexa Vega, and even Lady Gaga. If Michelle Rodriguez wielding a ray gun doesn't sell you, we don't know what will.

Sweet Sweetback’s Baadasssss Song is not wholly Blaxploitation. It’s a revolution. It’s a work of art. It’s a portrait on a reluctantly changing America. It’s a captivating piece on culture and society that harms itself as much as it attempts to blossom.
Melvin Van Peebles wrote, directed, starred, produced, edited, and co-scored this surreal political tale of Sweetback, a gigolo on the run after attacking two abusive white cops. A fever-dream of an odyssey, Sweetback’s voyage from the city to the desert is a portrait of black civil rights as well as the struggle through out the history of black America. Louisville, Ky. — Country music legend Loretta Lynn is three years older than she has led people to believe, an age change that undermines the story she told of being married at 13 in "Coal Miner's Daughter," documents obtained by The Associated Press show.
Lynn's birth certificate on file at the state Office of Vital Statistics in Frankfort, Ky., shows that Loretta Webb was born on April 14, 1932, in Johnson County, Kentucky. That makes her 80 years old, not 77. Also on file is her marriage license and two affidavits from her mother, Clara Marie Ramey, and S.W. Ward Jr., who was not related to the family, listing the same birthdate.
The records weren't filed until 1965, which meant that Lynn needed multiple documents to prove her age at that time. Lynn's signature appears on the document as Loretta Webb Lynn.
Melvin Webb lists his daughter "Loretta" as 7 years old for the 1940 Census, according to...

The records weren't filed until 1965, which meant that Lynn needed multiple documents to prove her age at that time. Lynn's signature appears on the document as Loretta Webb Lynn.

To Kill A Mockingbird 50th Anniversary Edition (Universal) Robert Mulligan’s film of Harper Lee’s landmark novel pits a liberal-minded lawyer (Gregory Peck) against a small Southern town’s racism when defending a black man (Brock Peters) on trumped-up rape charges. One of the 1960s’ first landmark films, a truly stirring human drama that hits all the right notes and isn’t dated a bit. Robert Duvall makes his screen debut (sans dialogue) as the enigmatic Boo Radley. DVD and Blu-ray double edition. Bonuses: Two feature-length documentaries: Fearful Symmetry and A Conversation with Gregory Peck; Featurettes; Excerpts and film clips from Gregory Peck’s Oscar acceptance speech and AFI Lifetime Achievement Award; Commentary by Mulligan and producer Alan J. While attending the Amazing Arizona Comic Con this past weekend, Deadpool creator Rob Liefeld dropped a major bit of news concerning the possibility of a future Deadpool film. Not only did he revive fans hopes by simply bringing it up, but he went on to claim that he’s actually seen eight minutes of test footage from the project!
They’ve got a great director on the movie, they’ve got a great script. I may or may have not seen some sort of test of footage that would blow your mind if you saw it and go holy crap and that’s Deadpool in costume. Katana swords, guns, shooting people’s faces off and making me laugh. And I may or may not have seen something that looks just like that. And you’ve got what would amount to the first R Rated X-Men movie. Because that script is R Rated.

It sounds like things are actually moving forward on the live-action Deadpool movie set up over at Fox. Rob Liefeld and Scott Lobdell had a few some pretty cool information on the movie, like the fact that director Tim Miller has shot some test footage for the movie. Here's what they had to say at the Amazing Arizona Comic Con last weekend...

[1] Together with writer Fabian Nicieza, comic artist Rob Liefeld created the character Deadpool, the 'merc with a mouth,' in the early '90s. The character quickly became a fan favorite, and was incorporated into X-Men Origins: Wolverine when that film was shot in 2008. That version of the character, played by Ryan Reynolds, didn't exactly inspire the same sort of devotion dedicated to the comic incarnation. Fox seemed to realize that it screwed up Deadpool in the film, and moved to exploit the character with a movie of his own, in which Reynolds would star as a more faithful recreation of the mercenary. Former visual effects guy Tim Miller is making the step up to director [2] with Deadpool, based on a script [3] by Zombieland writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick. We haven't heard a whole lot about the film in the past few months, but last weekend Liefeld strongly hinted...

No-one can be entirely sure how, when or why things went wrong for Meg Ryan; however, since 1998’s often parodied You’ve Got Mail in which she and Tom Hanks failed to relive the magic of the identically themed- but infinitely better written- Sleepless in Seattle, her output has degraded to the point of insignificance. For over ten years, Ryan has produced an endless stream of indistinct, fluffy, saccharine romantic comedies, coupled with the occasional generic aberration to which absolutely no one paid attention.
So after years of embarrassment- coupled with international mockery for her performance on Parkinson and increasing resemblance to Mickey Rourke- at her own irrelevance in front of the camera, she is set to make her debut behind it with Into The Beautiful.
Described by the film’s producers as, “a contemporary Big Chill with longtime friends reconnecting,” it sounds like exactly the sort of piece...

Meg Ryan will be making her directorial debut with Into The Beautiful, Variety is reporting.
The film is to be a comedy-drama, scripted by Anne Meredith, a relatively little-known writer, who was part of the team that wrote Rated X, the Emilio Estevez-directed TV movie about the notorious Mitchell Brothers, starring Estevez and his brother Charlie Sheen in the leading roles.
Ryan, who is approaching the big 50 mark this year with her birthday in November, has had a wealth of experience in comedy-dramas throughout her career, after her leading role in When Harry Met Sally… brought her international recognition back in 1989. Now, she has decided to step behind the camera lens for the first time, and I have to admit, I’m quite looking forward to seeing how this film turns out. Ryan’s expertise in the genre will almost certainly give her a great vantage point from which to start her directorial career.

But today that changes, as the once Hollywood darling is back making her directorial debut with the film Into The Beautiful. According to Variety, the new comedy-drama from screenwriter Anne Meredith (Rated X) is being developed as a modern version of Lawrence Kasdan's excellent 1983 film The Big Chill, about longtime friends reconnecting. That Jennifer Lopez honeymoon tape just went from Rated X to PG. "There wasn't anything close to sex in it," Lopez's attorney John Lavely tells People. "We never alleged that. But it's still private and personal to my client." A Los Angeles judge agreed Tuesday, upholding a ruling that Lopez's ex, Ojani Noa, is forbidden from using 11-plus hours of home video - 20 percent of which allegedly features Lopez - for a mockumentary about his life as a Cuban immigrant, previously titled How I Married Jennifer Lopez: The JLo and Ojani Noa Story. Martin Sheen begged son Emilio Estevez not to cast his other son, Charlie Sheen, as a sleazy cocaine addict in their movie Rated X (2000). Sheen says he worried that the film, about San Francisco porn peddlers JIM and Artie Mitchell, might tempt Charlie back to abusing alcohol and drugs. But now that he's seen it, Martin couldn't be prouder. He says, "It's one of the most extraordinary performances I've seen. You may not be able to endure it. Charlie shows you the road to hell... You can't play sick unless you're healthy. He's finally free. It was hard to watch. I forgot he was my son."...

Brothers Charlie Sheen and Emilio Estevez have put an end to their dysfunctional relationship and become the best of pals after working together on new movie Rated X (2000). The brothers sons of Apocalypse Now (1979) actor Martin Sheen, would often go for up to seven months without talking and admitted they'd grown apart. But the sibling stars have become so close after working on the movie about two pornography-making brothers, they now call each other three or four times a day - despite hardly speaking for a decade. Sheen says, "We had come out of really not having a relationship for 10 years and then suddenly boom, you know, we had an opportunity to work together and now we are friends again... There were patches of time when we wouldn't speak for several months and now since doing the movie we speak every day, several times a day." And Estevez, who also directs the movie, jokes, "In fact, Charlie, if you would stop calling me, I would appreciate it. I have a life to lead."...
