This show introduces the Special Victims Unit, a specially trained squad of detectives in the NYPD who investigate sexually related crimes.
The longest-running and most successful spin-off of Law & Order. The franchise includes: Law & Order (1990), Law & Order: Special Victims Unit (1999), Law & Order: Criminal Intent (2001), Law & Order: Trial by Jury (2005), Law & Order: UK (2009), ... ...
Not to mention the fact that I lost a wife after less than one night of connubial bliss to someone who was not only a detective but a member of my own squad.
Cases occasionally involve a murder that the detectives investigate. Though they'd be consulted on any sexual aspect of the crime, SVU wouldn't investigate the murder itself.
From the second episode of the second season (2000-2001), the opening credits break the pattern followed by the earlier episodes of SVU, the original Law & Order, and Criminal Intent. Instead of the credits ending with a shot of the cast walking towards the camera, they instead are shown sitting around a desk.
