This show introduces the Special Victims Unit, a specially trained squad of detectives in the NYPD who investigate sexually related crimes.
Before Kelli Giddish landed her role as Detective Amanda Rollins, she first appeared as a rape victim by the name of Kara Bawson in season eight, episode twelve, "Outsider".
Det. Monique Jefferies:
Are you gonna eat this?
John Munch: Suppose we say yes.
Det. Monique Jefferies: Suppose I was just being polite.
John Munch: That would be a first.
Brian Cassidy: Go ahead, Munch doesn't eat veggies
Det. Monique Jefferies: Really? I heard that's not the only thing John doesn't... eat.
Cases occasionally involve a murder that the detectives investigate. Though they'd be consulted on any sexual aspect of the crime, SVU wouldn't investigate the murder itself.
From the second episode of the second season (2000-2001), the opening credits break the pattern followed by the earlier episodes of SVU, the original Law & Order, and Criminal Intent. Instead of the credits ending with a shot of the cast walking towards the camera, they instead are shown sitting around a desk.
