This article contains spoilers for the season 2 premiere of "Loki."
A new season of "Loki" is finally here and, with it, a whole fresh set of headache-inducing complications regarding the nature of time travel and timeline branching and all that multiversal good stuff. What's not to love?! For Tom Hiddleston's God of Mischief and his fellow compatriots at the Time Variance Authority (Tva), like Owen Wilson's Agent Mobius, the opening minutes of the premiere (you can check out my review for /Film here) introduce a major problem for our heroes to solve: time slipping. Painfully (and gruesomely) pulled through time at random intervals, Loki's unwilling hijinks pose a pretty significant obstacle in his efforts to prevent the destruction of, well, all of time and the very fabric of the universe as we know it.
In any case, the unexpected addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe's time-travel lore...

Late in the upcoming book MCU: The Reign of Marvel Studios, authors Joanna Robinson, Dave Gonzales, and Gavin Edwards write about the explosion of Marvel movies and shows over the past few years — and, with it, the explosion in responsibility for MCU mastermind Kevin Feige. “Marvel Studios hadn’t been built to scale up the way Disney was demanding,” they suggest. “Its greatest strength quickly became its weakness. When asked a few years earlier why no other studio had been able to match Marvel’s track record, Joe Russo said,...

It is one of Beckett's most famous – and most startling – images. But what inspired the half-buried woman in Happy Days? His friend and biographer James Knowlson tracks down the first Winnies
Samuel Beckett was a passionate lover of art and a friend of many painters and sculptors. He loved Dutch and Flemish painting in particular – and art almost certainly inspired some of his most memorable theatrical images. Even his earliest plays, such as Waiting for Godot or Endgame, recall the old masters: the character Lucky in Godot may well remind you of a Brueghel grotesque; Estragon and Vladimir's physical antics echo scenes in Adriaen Brouwer's paintings ("Dear, dear Brouwer", Beckett called him); Hamm in Endgame appears to share genes with some portraits by Rembrandt, staring out at the viewer – Jacob Trip in his armchair, perhaps.
As for Beckett's late miniature works – recently revived by the Royal Court with a tour...

Punkers Rise Against crash the boards at #2, while Travis Barker bows at #9.

Adele will retake the #1 position on the Billboard 200 next week after dropping down to the #2 slot last week. Sales of Adele's 21 album were down 26 percent, but it still manages to retake the top thanks to 98,000 units moved, pushing the British R&B smoothie over the 750,000 mark after four weeks, according to figures provided by Nielsen SoundScan.
That was enough to keep veteran punks Rise Against down at #2 with the debut of their latest, Endgame, which sold 85,000 copies to edge out last week's #1, Lupe Fiasco's Lasers, which sits at #3 on sales of 47,000 as sales dropped by 77 percent. The only other debut in the top 10 comes from Blink-182 drummer Travis Barker, whose all-solo bow, Give the Drummer Some, lands at #9 (28,000).
The rest of the top 10: Glee: The Music, Volume 5 (#4, 43,000), Mumford & Sons,...

Chicago punk band Rise Against play some of the most caustic, abrasive, politically-minded punk rock in the game today, and yet they still manage to be best-sellers. Their passion and commitment to both righteous causes and extra-loud buzzsaw riffs is back again for the group's sixth album Endgame. Their previous two albums (2006's The Sufferer & The Witness and 2008's Appeal to Reason) began to push their sound into dramatically different places, and that trend continues on Endgame, their most dynamic release yet.
But where do the critics stand on Rise Against's ever-evolving sound and blood-and-guts commitment to change? The enthusiasm is there, but some people remain hesitant about the whole Rise Against aesthetic. In a three star review, Rolling Stone's Jon Dolan wrote, "Rise Against's mastery of anthemic punk rock is second only to their mastery of being pissed off," also noting that the sound expansion is probably...

Chicago – Three amazing talents converge on HBO this weekend for a ride on “The Sunset Limited,” an adaptation of a play about belief, faith, religion, science, and all the other deep issues that come to the surface when one considers the end of their life. It’s more complex, dark material from one of our best writers in this milieu (Cormac McCarthy of “No Country For Old Men” and “The Road”) and it’s vividly realized by two of the best living actors in Tommy Lee Jones and Samuel L. Jackson. Despite some flaws, there’s no good reason to miss “The Sunset Limited” if you subscribe to HBO.
TV Rating: 4.0/5.0
First, a warning — “The Sunset Limited” is almost defiantly theatrical. It features two actors for its entire running time and the dialogue is undeniably that of the stage more than the screen. Even the minimal camerawork and sparse set...

Danny Boyle's true tale of Aron Ralston, the trapped hiker who cut off his own arm with a penknife, is a world away from Slumdog Millionaire
It's a gloriously sunny spring day in the suburbs of Salt Lake City. Step inside the old furniture warehouse and the bright light gives way to a dark, dusty space. Past a small, windowless room where a man is carefully painting freckles on to a prosthetic arm with a tiny brush. Past piles of orange-red soil, hand-made boulders and a vast vertical canyon so realistic it looks as though it's been airlifted from the deserts of Utah.
Right at the far end, black cloth curtains hang loosely around a rectangular space. A machine pumps dust out relentlessly. A gap in the curtains allows a glimpse of red rock. A disembodied Lancastrian voice booms out: "Right, James, let's go! Action!" The set is utterly silent.

Shakespearean actor who played many familiar roles on film and television
Few actors can claim to have played most of Shakespeare's clowns and made some of them funny, but Geoffrey Hutchings, who has died of meningitis aged 71, did just that. An associate artist with the Royal Shakespeare Company, he played Launce, Bottom, Feste, one of the Dromios and even the impossible Lavache in Trevor Nunn's great "Crimean war" All's Well That Ends Well, with Peggy Ashcroft making her RSC farewell as the Countess of Rousillon. Hutchings brought an individual quality of asperity and crackle to everything he did, and was noted early on as a character actor of uncommon personality: small, slight, but always ferocious, he was like a terrier with a dangerous bark.
He grasped Autolycus, for instance, that wandering snapper-up of unconsidered trifles, in Ronald Eyre's 1981 The Winter's Tale at Stratford-upon-Avon, and transformed him into a...

HollywoodNews.com: “Glee” fever is so strong that it swayed Emmy voters who lauded the TV show with 19 nominations. But that wasn’t the only show to catch their eye: HBO’s miniseries “The Pacific” harpooned 24 nods.
In years past, the Emmys use to favor those series which were on the air for seasons on end, often times honoring them later in their run. But in recent years, the organization has become open minded to frosh shows, evident in its embrace of Fox’s “Glee,” ABC sitcom “Modern Family,” CBS’ “The Good Wife” and Showtime’s “Nurse Jackie.”
That said, the Emmys continue to have its favorites, i.e. “Mad Men,” “Breaking Bad” and “30 Rock.”
The 62nd Primetime Emmy Awards will air on August 29 on NBC with Jimmy Fallon hosting from the Nokia Theater in Los Angeles. For the first time in 30 years, the awards show will air live all over the nation.

Director Conor McPherson has a straightforward philosophy on how to learn to make movies: “You’ve got to make a few bad films first.”
Sharing this, the Irish filmmaker recalls his first cinematic directorial attempt, which came in the form of a feature film entitled “Endgame” instead of through the more common route of making a short film. McPherson, a playwright and stage director at the time, had gotten the job to direct after writing the screenplay for the 1997 film “I Went Down.” “Playwrights who direct [film] don’t trust the image,” says McPherson. “At first, I wanted to get the characters to talk as much as possible.”
McPherson has come a long way since then, evidence his most recent film, the supernatural horror/romance “The Eclipse.” The film is filled with breathtaking vistas of a picturesque Irish seaside town and elaborate long takes. In fact, dialogue is subdued and used sparingly.

#232 (Vol. 2 #4): David Levine On Stage
The great caricaturist David Levine, who passed away at the close of 2009, was the subject of a sad profile article, “Levine in Winter“, written by David Margolick in Vanity Fair in November of the previous year. It was yet another variation on what has become an all too familiar theme: the troubles of the comics or cartoon art professional when, for whatever reason, his career goes into decline. Levine’s brilliant caricatures of politicians, authors, and other notables had regularly appeared in The New York Review of Books for over forty years. His work appeared in other publications as well, but the Review published half his work over the years. But, in his eighties, Levine suffered from macular degeneration, which greatly dimmed his vision, hence handicapping his ability to draw. This led to an awkward situation: though Levine believed he could adapt and continue working,...

Stephen Rea, born in Belfast, Northern Ireland, admits there are American dramas that are culturally alien to him and require research. But that's not an issue in the plays of Sam Shepard, one of Rea's favorite playwrights. Indeed, Rea has been featured in Shepard's work in Dublin, London, and New York for more than 30 years. Rea is currently co-starring in Shepard's "Ages of the Moon," now playing Off-Broadway at the Atlantic Theater Company. "When you're acting in it, you feel more like a musician than an actor," Rea says. "You don't feel hidebound by mere character and situation. The performances are freer and more open because of it. At the same time, this play requires such precision and concentration. There's nowhere to hide."Set in rural Kentucky, the two-hander (also starring Irish actor Seán McGinley) is a dark, comic piece about two old friends who are lost souls. They reminisce,...
