During her family's move to the suburbs, a sullen 10-year-old girl wanders into a world ruled by gods, witches, and spirits, and where humans are changed into beasts.
Chi and Sen both use the same Japanese Kanji, which means "one thousand," but are different readings of the same character. The name "Sen" is also a play on the name "Chihiro."
I'll miss you, Chihiro. Your best friend, Rumi.
At the beginning of the movie, the space where Chihiro's family parks their car is covered in stone, and at the end it is completely grassy and lush.
The credits have a series of still images from the film. The last image before the film fades is Chihiro's shoe in the river.
