Aaghaaz is one such film where Sunil Shetty is given another chance to prove himself as a capable actor after some horrible films like Kala Samrajya. The movie has a damn good start explaining the problems of what a place like Mumbai has in general and how the bad people like our villains are doing too much bad making things out of control. However, the first half of the film is based on romance between our calm and gentle hero and heroine. But, circumstances make Shetty marry another girl and leave the heroine. This is a good flow as there isn't boring romance throughout the film. The main romantic twist in the first half is how the bad brother in law kills the wife of Sunil who just wanted his wealth. However, the second half is where the actual fun starts. Though described as a typical action hero and always being the saviour of the poor, Shetty excels in his action scenes. He beats the baddies black and blue. But, they obviously get tough and torture our hero but stabbing him several times and have her sister molested in public which is just too much injustice. The main problem wit the story is these parts that drag the movie for an extra 20 minutes. The courtroom scenes and the scenes where Shetty is crying in pain to ask for help for his sister is just too much. Plus, some unknown actors like Akshay Anand perform poorly which annoys. The performances are average. Shetty excels and so does Sushmita Sen. Alok Nath also does well as the dynamic character who lures Shetty to the den and gets him wounded at the hands of the enemy. His change of character is good. The rest provide good to average support. On the whole, Aaghaaz will only be remembered as a typical film. Though, the film was a hit it has been criticized.
  • Newly arrived Govind Narang gets into the bad books of Mumbai underworld when he rescues a girl from being molested by them. Soon the goons are after him, and with this return people or Narang's past, the whole of which form Aaghaaz.

It is a film depicting the mafia nuisance in society. The film is a mix of comedy, romance to please everyone in the crowd, because of which the film deviates it from its social direction.

The ladies acting is weak. The camera work is poor, being fast and shaky. The editing is weak with rapid transition from scene to song.

It may have a been a high budget movie of those days, as evidenced by the huge star cast, especially serial actors, and shooting in exotic locales like Malaysia and Switzerland.

Sunil Shetty does well in the film

    Deserves 5*
  • Director Yogesh has a very good plot and motivational storyline but he hasn't utilized the screenplay well and stretched the film in the 2nd half with no proper storytelling. Performance of the cast is the only highlight of the film because rest is just average and typical bollywood style.

Suniel Shetty carries the whole film from start to end specially in action & emotional scenes he is quite good and make the interest of the audience to watch the film.

Sushmita & Namrata did a perfect job of supporting cast both played their characters well and one can totally enjoy watching them on screen. Rest of the cast is average nothing much to do as per the storyline.

Music & Bgm is fun to listen and definitely engaging for the film.

All n all it's an Average Action Drama film which is definitely a one time watch for social message & performance of Suniel Shetty...

There is not a lot new in the plot of "Aaghaaz". It's a pretty standard fusion of revenge drama + love story. What makes it worth watching is Suniel Shetty flexing his acting muscles - finally. Well, that and the chili powder scene referred to in the title of this review.

Suniel has done a lot of these "protector of the people" roles but few allow him to act because few provide him a character with any depth. The character of Govind comes across as somewhat naive and simplistic in his uncompromising morality in the first half of the film. It is only after the intermission that Govind shows some layers. Suniel gives a solid performance in the 2nd half as a man betrayed by the unwillingness of neighbors he once aided to help him when he's in trouble. The scene when neighbors come to confront his legal tactics at his home is a demonstration of acting ability. Govind says nothing but the viewer can see what he's thinking, feel what he's feeling and understand his unspoken rage. It is a case of the writing, direction and performance being in sync. The very fact that he says nothing but commands the scene is marvelous.

There is a somewhat anemic love story attempted. It is not compelling, partially because there's no preamble. The first time we meet the characters, they're already in love. The reunion at the end is not really satisfying.

The songs are good but unremarkable. Production quality is reasonably good - lighting, framing and costumes\set decoration all meet expectations.

The scene with the chili powder is a fave of mine - Govind is wounded and takes refuge in a shop were red chilies are ground into powder. He takes a handful of the powder and smears it into his fresh lacerations and emits a scream of defiance and "*$@#!% that hurt"! His enemies realize how tough he must be and take off running only to be chased by chili-powdered, butt-kicking Govind. Classic!

The only downside to this film is the somewhat graphic depiction of rape in full view of the public. It's a bit unsettling.

But otherwise, watch it if you're a fan of Suniel or a lover of the wounded hero subgenre of Indian films. It's a satisfying ride.

    Warning: Spoilers
Sunil Shetty started as an action hero but after HU TU TU he started doing diverse cinema, yet he also did commercial films like this The film is a remake of a telugu film SIVIAH but there is nothing worthwhile to talk, It reminds us of almost every action film Sunil Shetty plays a village guy who then fights against the gundas his sister gets raped and he sues the bhastiwale for being mute spectator There are other sub plots too like Sunil's marriage with Suman Ragnathan, Sunil loving Sushmita.etc but overall the film is crap In fact it's predictable, annoying and the unwanted comedy too irritates

Direction is crap Music is okay

Sunil Shetty repeats his BHAI, KRODH act but what else you expect him to do in such roles? Sushmita Sen is decent but hardly looks a cop, Sharad Kapoor in his first release after JOSH where he got praise is wasted, Among villains Gulshan Grover, Mukesh Tiwari, Alok Nath(yes) are all stereotypical, Suman Ragnathan is hardly there, Namrata Shirodkar plays the second heroine, rest are okay
  • Basically, a Bollywood mobster movies pitting two spice merchants, along with their predictably gorgeous love interests, AAGHAZ has some good music clips, and is aided by stunning locales near Cape Town, South Africa. As a musical mobster movie, I would say it succeeds, if you can accept the whole premise of a melodramatic musical about mobsters. If the concept seems ludicrous to you, so will the movie. Piece by piece, the film does have some good points: the locales, cinematography, and music clips already mentioned, a couple of the performances... But as whole, this film is a disappointment.
