Whenever Larry inevitably finds himself lying to his wife, Cheryl, about his latest convoluted mishap, Cheryl Hines is as genuinely in the dark, as her character. That's because she is not privy to the full script outline, only being exposed to her own scenes.
"We'll love each other throughout this lifetime, but after death through all eternity."
Larry: You mean this is... this is continuing into the afterlife?
Cheryl: Yeah, that's the idea. Do you have a problem with that?
Larry: Well, I... I thought this was over at death. I...
In season five Richard Lewis has a set of golf clubs that he's so attached to that he won't loan them out, even to Larry who has just agreed to give him a life saving kidney transplant. In season six Larry and Jeff take Richard golfing and he knows nothing about the game.
Since the dialogue is always ad-libbed, the episodes get a "Story by" credit but not a "Teleplay by" credit.
