  • Oru CBI Diary Kurippu (1988) : Brief Review -

A Classic Murder Mystery in Typical Indian Style Drama. What Dev Anand's CID missed can be found here as the time gap was big enough to fill the loopes. Having seen almost hundreds of Mystery thrillers from Hollywood Golden phase (30s, 40s and 50s) and some popular Bollywood films from 50s and 60s, Oru CBI Diary Kurippu was like a reply on different screen. The gap between these films is too much for what i can say, the filmmaking became much advanced and writers got enough references rather than making a pure original version. Oru isn't actually a dark crime film like those Old Hollywood's detective/cops thrillers but yes it is influenced by some of the old Bollywood and South Indian films. Actually, almost all Murder Mysteries are similar in a way, but we just have to differentiate them according to situations and storytelling. Instead of calling it a Murder Mystery, i would say Oru is solid Investigation Drama. Mostly, such films keep the murderers unknown till the end but Oru starts off right with known killer family, if not the exact killer. Those Satyajit Ray's Films on Feluda were damn slow and dark and missed light tone like this. Well, it wasn't needed but just to say that it adds repeat value to the Film. Prabhakara Varma is called upon to investigate the death of Omana, the daughter-in-law of a local businessman. It looks like a suicide but, Varma is sure that is not so. Then the CBI Officer Sethurama enters to solve this murder mystery with smooth and proper investigation. Mammootty arrives little late but once he arrives, he takes the charge of the film like all alone. The supporting cast is good. The screenplay is engaging, writing is superb, dialogue are regular, cinematography is average and Madhu's direction is fantastic. Overall, a Classic Murder Mystery in audience friendly atmosphere.

  • Warning: Spoilers
'Oru CBI Diary Kurippu' was the birth of the legend that beats justice with more brain than brawn - Sethuram Iyer, CBI. Essayed to perfection by the inimitable Mammooty, the movie is based on a case diary of a CBI investigation headed by Iyer. Suspecting foul play in a suicide of a young married girl, Iyer and his crack team of Vikram (Jagathy) and Harry (Suresh Gopi) get down to solving the mystery behind the death. Supported by a lingering theme song and a stellar cast, this movie's different approach {There were no songs nor heroines to distract Iyer :)} was eagerly lapped up by audiences, young and old alike.

    A classic movie. I rate it 10/10.
  • This is like the Poirot stuff of Malayalam Movies. Iyer and his team goes a level beyond the CSI. This too should be made as a Web series in Netflix or something at the earliest; with some young cast - showcasing the beginnings or sequel of CBI Diary Kurippu .
  • A Investigative Officer with his wits and swag ! Considered the best Investigative Suspense Thriller in the history of Malayalam movie. 4 Sequels have been released of this Movie with the same character Sethuram Iyer as the Protagonist, the only Malayalam movie with the same actor playing 4 sequels !!

    Warning: Spoilers
First of all i watched this movie in the year 2021,have heard about it and have it a try. At first I thought it may not be as suspenseful as today's mystery thrillers. To be frank the movie reveals the one of suspects at early stage,it was like going to be will cop get to them or not story....but wait ,has to be done under law ,and what evidence they are left with .Now comming to what made this movie a watchable even after all this year's is that it covers lot of basics .Method of investigation, name the three stages ,it makes sense how the cbi work. Still you need to bring a lot of things like bank account, call traking with some sense. that's how this movie made it to all time watchable. Stay long Malayalam cinema with this kind of stories ,,,from tamilnadu
  • I can't say this is the one of the best thriller. This is the one and only edge seat investigation thriller in Mollywood. Another masterpiece from the titan of Indian cinema
