  • The special effects were good for their time. So were the characters. Interesting plot line but crappy dialog at times. Not until Heroes came along did I realize something was missing from Mutant X. Good directing! There's a distinctly cheap feeling to it at times, with backgrounds that really disappoint, and scenes added just to make the minutes.

You'll be finding yourself saying "come on come on...get to scene where they use their powers" or counting how many times they show them getting out of a car in that particular episode.

You'll like it if you're a fan of the genre. Still a nice watch if you're not.
  • The writers simply don't get it. It's a science fiction super hero series. Shouldn't the main characters be super heroes? These guys are just DUMB. The bad guys are always better prepared, smarter and more disciplined than the good guys. The bad guys are always two steps ahead, and seem to have a game plan. Adam, a brilliant scientist who can crack the genetic code can't anticipate anything that the bad guys might do and stumbles into 5 traps per episode. Acting = OK Character = OK Special Effects = really good Premise = OK Writing = Makes me think of XMen meets dumb and dumber. Not very satisfying when you know in advance your hero will get his ass kicked and his head handed to him in every episode.
  • Badly acted, cheep looking action pact fun.

The acting is below par and no amount of clever camera angles can help that but when all is said it's a pretty fun show to watch.

Not too taxing on the brain, type of thing to throw on if you got an hour to spare.

    Basically X-Men on a budget.
  • I just bought the complete first season on DVD because it's Marvel, so I figured it couldn't be that bad. My initial reaction after watching the first episode was severe disappointment, as the acting, dialogue and realism are all just so terrible. I gave the show a second chance, though, and watched the second episode. Although it was probably just as flawed as the first, it actually became enjoyable to watch. I think it just takes a bit of getting used to to be able to appreciate the show. It's an entertaining show, albeit heavily flawed. If you're a fan of the Marvel universe and can deal with a show with a thousand plot holes, then this just may be the show for you.
  • I really like John Shea and I like to know what really happened to his character. I think this show would be lost without him and they really need to get him back. I don't like getting rid of the red-headed girl. I think it was fine just the way it was. When they do this to a good show like getting rid of a wonderful talent like John Shea? They really are asking for cancellation. I remember the second season of PSI Factor, another of Alliance Atlantis productions, Matt Frewer and Nigel Bennett brought wonderful energy to that show for that season. Matt and Nigel left by third season. They brought Joanne Vannicola who lacked the spark and void left by Frewer and Bennett. Now, I am not crazy about the Mutant X show anymore. Not without John Shea and the redhead, whoever she was.

Okay, I normally don't post reviews cause i generally am to lazy to do stuff like this, and most movie's and TV shows don't inspire me one way or another to post reviews...

Then there is Mutant X, which inspired complete and total hatred within me. I don't think I have ever hated a show as much as I hated this one. The worst part about it is that I must have watched almost every episode. So really, who's got the bigger problem, the show or me.

I dare say that it's me...

Any way, this show is a train wreck; is as good an idea as jumping off a diving board into an empty pool; is like a black hole, it just keeps on sucking...

And in case you don't get my message, I really didn't like this show.
  • Mutant X holds a special place in my heart, but I believe there are areas where it could have been further improved. One aspect that could have benefitted from some adjustments is the cinematography. The frequent use of a sepia tone in many scenes of the show didn't always enhance the visual experience. Additionally, I noticed a few continuity errors that occasionally detracted from the overall viewing experience. Some of the fight scenes could have also used more refinement.

However, where Mutant X truly shines is in its acting and dramatic elements. The performances are superb, and it would be unfair to discredit the talented actors involved. The chemistry between the heroes of Mutant X is particularly wonderful, adding depth to their interactions. Moreover, the show's metaphorical exploration of mistreatment and discrimination towards individuals who are different is both powerful and thought-provoking. The series also boasts an impressive mythology that captivates viewers.

Despite its shortcomings, Mutant X has aged beautifully and continues to resonate with its audience. It possesses a remarkable amount of heart that sets it apart from many other shows. With a few tweaks, this show could have been even more exceptional, but it remains a worthwhile watch for fans of the genre.
  • There are worse series and movies than this, but Mutant X didn't miss the "absolutely awful" mark by much. The problem of this series isn't shoddy camera work or crappy writing (although those two sure didn't help), but the penultimate inability of the actors to actually act! Yes, maybe I shouldn't get so worked up about some TV series that got canceled after three seasons, but someone somewhere is responsible for casting these actors, and none of them even managed to get past the two-facial-expressions-per-episode stage.

Example #1: Victoria Pratt (Shalimar Fox - what a name. She's supposed to be some catlike being, and her last name is that of a canine.) Expression #1: Blank face. I suppose she must have been thinking "nobody's gonna look at my face with the body I have". Expression #2: Pursed lip smile. You know, real actresses can actually make this one work (Angelina Jolie, anyone?), but it takes a bit of exercise.

Example #2: John Shea (Adam Kane - this name, only given after Fox's lawsuit, is actually better than Adam Xero, which sounds a lot like a brand of recycled paper) Expression #1: ARGH-Must-Concentrate! No wonder he has so many wrinkles. I've seen him use this expression in a number of movies. It almost never fails to carry the message across: Why did I become an actor? With this face alone, I could win Sumo championships! Expression #2: Relieved Smile. Must have been one helluva visit to the restrooms for him to look that smug.

Now, I agree that right after the person responsible for casting is severely chastised, it's the turn of whoever came up with the costumes. I agree that the Bad Guy does look awfully reminiscent of Andy Warhol. And "Very Evil Lines (TM)" don't help to improve his image, when I consistently get the impression that he is looking to the left of whomever he is currently speaking to, as if he was reading his lines off a billboard.

Yes, for about half an episode, this show manages to exude some kind of comic charm. After about 20 minutes, however, you cannot help but begin to think that the actors and story writers are actually trying to be earnest. If you have ever, at all, sometime in your life, read even a single issue of the Xmen (or, seen one of the admittedly somewhat disappointing movies, or been lucky enough to catch the cartoon series on TV), then you will probably agree that even the worst Xmen story "pwns" the living daylights out of this show. Yes. I know Avi Arad is at least partially to blame for this show. But for all the good he did in assisting with the cartoon series and the slightly disappointing movies (TM), he's still gonna get it for this one.

Angel at the Entrance to Heaven: So, who have we here?

    Avi Arad: Avi Arad.

Angel: Ah, yes. You helped 207 elderly ladies across the street, rescued three children from drowning, gave half your income to charity, saved a small African nation from bankruptcy - OH! What have we here?! You created the TV series Mutant X? Straight down it is for you, fella! Good riddance!

No, I'm not bitter. I'm just really sad about the time I spent watching this series (gladly, only 3 episodes). Time I will never get back (and might later on come to miss).

My advice: Stay away from this. There are much better series on TV and down the Sci/Fi DVD aisles at your local store. If you really really REALLY want a superhero/mutant series, get the original Xmen cartoon series, or try a peek at the Xmen Evolution series, if for nothing else, then to see Rogue as a confused, conflicted Goth teen.

Oh my God this show! I adore it SO MUCH! The characters, their chemistry, and all the plots in every episode! The 2000s vibes honestly give me life! 10/10!
  • Bad TV falls in to two categories: so bad it's good, and just bad. This invented a third one: so bad it makes bad TV look brilliant. Imagine the X Men, but give most of the mutants useless powers that they don't use effectively. Now throw in terrible effects; wooden acting; dismal dialogue; amateurish direction; an editor who appeared to want to use every wipe, fade, and transition that his edit suite had available; poor cinematography; and cheap sets, and you've still got something better than this tepid stool-water.

The fight scenes are obviously meant to be a dramatic and balletic, full of slow-mo and wire-work, but sadly the fight choreography fails to deliver, the actors are unable to convincingly throw a punch, and the ensuing shambles makes Power Rangers look like high art. Outside of the action things are no better; the scripts are dire, failing both in terms of plot and pacing, and what passes for each episode's story is so predictable as to be painful. As each instalment lurches towards its inevitable conclusion one can only wonder how this got past episode 1, never mind surviving three seasons. The only reason I've not given it a lower score is that the music has a certain something...

Oh, and as a final note, for some reason the Big Bad appears to be an Andy Warhol impersonator.
  • OK so i saw the third season only where Lexa Pierce enters. AND IT WAS AWESOME!! And after reading some of the comments i think i would love to watch the other seasons to prove them wrong. They only say that they were disappointed with the first episode because they started watching with high expectations. They expected it to be a good show like Xmen and all the other mutant and powers movie. i was just flipping through the channels and i saw the cast and i loved it. the cast is awesome. They make a great team and i think that if they didn't cancel the show that it would have gotten better. The viewers would have been able to see more about what happened to Adam Cain and also see where the Mutant X relationship where going to go and how they were all going to end up. I think this show is great and even though they stopped recording and writing scripts i think they should at least put re-runs. It's a great show and people just think that since there's mutants it would be like fantastic four or x-men and it is not.

Made way through the first 2 episodes, it was hard going, forcing myself to continue in the vain hope that it might improve.

Bad camera work, bad ideas, bad music and terrible dialog all add up to a train wreck of a show. It feels as if I am watching a show made by first year film students because it is so poorly put together. It reminds me of the short movie Nightwalker (google it, u will find it).

All in all, I am not surprised that the show was canceled, I am surprised that they let it go on for so long. If you want to see a top class mutant show, watch Heroes. That is a perfect example of how to tell a story.
  • I love this series and still watch it even though its canceled. Adam Kain developed the mutants, but did so only to help mankind. He was searching for to be able to manipulate DNA to help cure diseases. But in some, their genes mutated, giving them mutant abilities. You can tell throughout the episodes he feels responsible for all the problems connecting with mutants. Shalimar is a feral- who is like a cat. Adam brought her in from abuse when she was a child and helped her to cope with her abilities. Through all the episodes, you see a father-daughter relationship with the two. Brennan- shoots electricity through his hands. He is a street wise guy who was a thief. Now turned straight, he sometimes struggles with not just "taking down" his opponents. He has a problem with not being in charge and not in all the loops, but Adam slowly helps him to start calming down. Emma-controls minds. She is soft and quiet and strives to feel needed. She feels close with people they are often after, giving another side for who they are after. Jesse-turns into brick and "phases" letting things go straight through him. He comes from a rich family and wants to prove he can fight. He is very smart when it comes to computers. The newest edition in the end is Lexa- maipulate light. She has a dark past and a good reason for it. She has a habit of keeping the others outta the loop, but learns there is no room for that. She tends to keep people at arms length because of her past and is pretty much hated for it. But as time goes on, she learns to grow more and to trust. This series is very good, the action is great, actors are great and you can feel compassion for the characters.
  • It's interesting to go back and see old marvel before the movies. But not in this case. It has very little to do with Marvel even the alternate earth comics never reference Mutant X because there just weren't enough fans of the show for comic writers to shoot out a nod to Mutant X, and Marvel comics are filled with call backs be it just a passing joke or a full plot device, but Mutant X is never referenced in any comic in any form because it's crap.

The one vague thread it holds to Marvel is the idea of mutants, and even then it's watered down to where the X Gene comes from genetic science, not random mutations or something from the comics.

I watched the X-Men cartoon and read the comics growing up, this was exciting to see previews for but the one thing I didn't pick up on at the time was that they were not pushing that they had any marvel characters in the show. And in fact when it did air it turned out it had nothing to do with the comics and cartoons. It was really a complete waste of a licensed IP, they could have at least had the New Mutants(X-teens in training to become X-Men in the comics) and drawn in NM fans but they went to all the trouble of licensing Marvel and didn't use anything!

I have no idea why it's rating above average at 6 besides some dishonest raters are marking this show 10 but I would say it's easily a 3, its not good(7-8), it's not awful (1-2), It certainly is below average but by how much? Well- If I could point to one appealing aspect I would give it a 4 but there isn't much of anything so it's really a 3.
  • OK, I never saw this from the beginning of it's run, I just saw the re runs on SPACE. I remember the first season it was gonna be on, I saw the ads. They looked pretty good and I actually wanted to see this. So the first episode comes along, and I was a little disappointed. I mean, it was OK, but nothing special. The problems I had with it mostly revolved around the characters. I thought that the characters were a bit wooden and were a bit stock. But I saw the potential for this thing to become a dark twisted bio punk show and thought that perhaps the characters would evolve as the episodes went on. There was one minor thing that annoyed me. When the electrical one blasted the telekinetic mutant that was chasing him and ema, he was not effective because the telekinetic guy was wearing rubber shoes or something like that. Now that on it's own is plausible, however, the electric jolt actually knocked the telekinetic guy backwards. Now this is obviously contradictory, but I let it slip in hopes that the series would evolve from this point.

Well let's just say, the show got a lot worse after this.

After the first episode, the whole series fell apart. I think the characters actually became more wooden, mutant x becoming like the preppy popular club of the mutant world. Every episode consisted of the same thing. Mason Eckhart had some new mutant brought forth to capture other new mutants (why are they called new mutants?) This new mutant would come up with some plan to capture other new mutants, be thwarted by mutant x, be put into a stasis pod for their failure, and then repeat next episode. This got really redundant really quick. And some of the mutants had the lamest powers. I remember one had super hearing. He wasn't lucky enough to at least get super senses, no, he got super hearing. And the ones with good powers never used them properly. which brings me to my next point.

The mutants powers were not used right. Take for example, Ema. now in the first season she was probably the least powerful of the group besides shalimar. However she was still useful. But when they were in a fight, instead of confusing the people mutant x was fighting, she joined in the hand to hand combat. What the hell, she has a pretty useful power and never uses it? In the second season when all the mutants got their powers upgraded, she was easily the most powerful of the group. The only one that could compete was that dude who could phase in and out of stuff, I forget his name. Even when she got the upgraded powers, SHE ALMOST NEVER USED THEM IN A GOOD SITUATION. she usually joined in the usually lame fighting scenes kicking and punching, yet she can kill people with her mind.

The electrical one, Brennan, is another matter. One thing that annoyed me about him is how water was his weakness. Seriously, he can generate electricity through his body, yet can't get electrocuted by his own electricity? what the hell. And once again he almost never uses his powers when it's a good situation. He goes into the fights kicking an punching instead of electrocuting people. the one that phases in and out is one that should go into the fight kicking and punching because of what his powers are. However, he never phases out to dodge, except in exceptional circumstances, and never increases his mass to hit, except in exceptional circumstances. And then there's shalimar, who had her DNA spliced with a cats or some stupid thing like that. What the hell is her power, kung fu master? I know, i know, she's supposed to be super strong and super agile and stuff like that, but I guess the low budget of the show didn't allow it to be obvious, seeing as her fighting not only looked forced, but didn't even seem to be noticeably better than a normal human.

Anyway, I only saw part of season one, a little of season 2 and none of season three, just because the episodes were so bad I couldn't watch them anymore. The only reason I watched them in the first place was because there was nothing else on I wanted to watch during the time slot and I usually have the TV on in the background when I'm on the computer. Anyway, I was really way to nice to the program in this comment, but I thought I'd write something at least a little constructive. The only reason I didn't give the show a 1 is because the concept was good, the writers just dropped the ball on it.
  • I have to say, ever since young, I've been watching X Men. When Mutant X came on, I thought that it was probably just a copy of X Men, but it wouldn't hurt to give it a chance.

And I'm glad I gave it a chance.

Mutant X, I say, has a great storyline, and the characters, I must say, are pretty much perfect. I myself have only watched 5/6 of the episodes, but I know that I can safely say that Mutant X is NOT a mere copy of X Men. I've introduced this series to others, and all of them, every single one of them agreed that it is a good series, and it was very upsetting when they canceled the fourth season, we all looked forward to it.

For those who have said that MX was a terribly series... Something must be wrong with you. I have no idea how you can say that MX was terrible, it was great, an excellent series that is a must watch.
  • Mutant X is by far one of the worst series I have ever watched. I know it's already 20 years old, but Jesus the dialogues, special effects, story, music, fighting scenes and so on are so cheap and terrible that it gave me headaches. I couldn't bring myself to continue watching after the first season, it's just too bad. These teenie dramatic love stories and the music they add during the fight scenes are too much for me. The show reminds me the power rangers series. I know some people love watching trash or B-Movies, if you are looking for a trash series, then go with it.
  • AngelHonesty16 December 2019
Not for everyone. The filming is lower budget. The acting is cheesy, so is the storyline. But if you want to watch a show with people who have powers and look very beautiful, then I would give it a try.
  • This is a great sci-fi action show.I know it's not as popular as some, but I think it's cool. The fx are awesome, the stories are great, the dialog is good, and the characters couldn't be better. This show has some really good actors who almost convince you they ARE the characters they play. This show may not get rave reviews, but I think it's worth watching.

X-Men wannabe... Marvel sold rights for X-Men to Fox and then based on X-Men made Mutant X series. And of course they were sued. If they decided to risk law suit they should have at least made show worth that sacrifice. I don't say it's unwatchable, but in endless see of amazing shows available this one is complete waste of time. First thing to annoy me was terrible music. Then there's irritating editing and atmosphere of old Power Rangers. It's better that I do not start about action scenes in slow motion. They say that story is full of holes and illogicality, but I wouldn't know as I gave up on this after first episode. I have no time and nerves to spend 66 times 45 minutes on production so lousy.

    4/10
  • I saw only maybe 20 minutes of it and I turned it off. It was horribly boring. The acting was made to seem like the real villain and the hero was the eject button.

Mutant X is a show I'd recommend for NOT TO DO tutorial.

No one has ever heard of it. There is a reason why.

    The End.
  • I have recently started to watch this Tv series and in all honesty I am very underwhelmed! As it is 2023 and this show was made in 2001 I have to allow for its age but in saying that I have some of my favourite series that were made around the same time and have held up to time mainly due to the story being good and acting! However this series does not have that benefit either story wise or acting wise as the main characters are quite wooden which is emphasised in action shots that are quite pedestrian. The music accompanying the show is very dated and does not fit well in the slightest! I can see why the show didn't go very far shame it didn't have better writers and cast!
  • I first want to start out by saying that Mutant X is an excellent show. The element that drew me in was the mutant angle of the show. I have been a follower of the X-Men for years and even though Mutant X is not a part of the X-Men universe I was interested. I have not been disappointed by the show. Mutant X has a lot of adventure and action but it also has emotion and intrigue that make it dynamic. It is nice to have a chance to get to watch a show about mutants on a weekly basis and I look forward to seeing each new episode. I find it somewhat liberating to watch Mutant X because I can start out fresh with all the concepts and characters.

Adam, John Shea, is very interesting because he is human. Adam is the founder and leader of Mutant X. He has great compassion for the members of his team. It is his mission to take care of those who are mutants. He has a very good reason why he wants to help mutants.

Shalimar Fox, Victoria Pratt, is intense because of her feral nature. Shalimar is a tough fighter who protects the members of Mutant X like a fierce mother bear.

Jesse Kilmartin, Forbes March, is fascinating because of his ability change the nature of his body at will. Jesse is the good-hearted boy next door type that truly wants to make a difference for mutants.

Emma deLauro, Lauren Lee Smith, is intriguing because of her telempathic ability. Emma is a caring person who is exploring her possibly enormous gift.

Brennan Mulwray, Victor Webster, is electrifying literally. Brennan has the power of electricity which matches his personality. He is a bit of rebel which will help Mutant X.

Mutant X has an enemy in a human named Mason Eckhart, Tom McCamus. Eckhart may bear a striking resemblance to Andy Warhol but he is a dark individual who wants to hunt down mutants.

I believe that Mutant X will continue to grow and change. It is at the beginning of its story and the story has a lot of directions that can be explored. The same can be said of the characters. I feel that Mutant X is a great show that will get stronger and even better with every episode.
  • If you're into guys, then this show might be worth watching for the occasional shot of star Victor Webster without a shirt. That's about the only redeeming factor that I can find for the show. Even allowing leniency for superhero/comic-book physics, I still find the mechanics of the storylines to be obnoxiously bad most of the time. I'm a big sci-fi and X-Men fan, and I was excited about this series when I first heard about it. However, the last time I sat through an episode I told my roommate that if he ever saw me watching this show again to take the remote from me and start hitting me in the head with it until I got up to change the channel.
