Two boys growing up in a violent neighborhood of Rio de Janeiro take different paths: one becomes a photographer, the other a drug dealer.
The last shot of the movie, where the little boy loses his slipper and comes back to pick it up, was not scripted. The incident really happened during the shooting and director Fernando Meirelles kept the take because it helped to highlight the boy's presence.
Whoa, the chicken ran away. Get that chicken, dude!
In the scene where the tender trio are robbing the gas man and giving out the free gas, when the police arrive and the gang are running off, in the back ground there is a woman in a yellow dress carrying a big gas canister, yet in the next shot she is seen running in the same spot without the gas.
There are no actor credits in the opening credits.
