Documentary fans have a lot to be excited about this month on HBO and Max. April begins with the premiere of The Synanon Fix, a docuseries that follows the rise and fall of the cult-like drug rehabilitation program Synanon. The documentary Brandy Hellville and the Cult of Fast Fashion takes a deep-dive into the controversial “one size fits most” clothing brand Brandy Mellville and the impact of fast fashion on the planet.
An American Bombing: The Road to April 19th looks at the surge of political violence and anti-government sentiment that led to the 1995 Oklahoma City Bombing, and the effects still felt nearly 30 years later. HBO is also returning with a second part to their popular docuseries The Jinx, with filmmakers continuing their investigation of Robert Durst.
But if documentaries aren’t your thing, there’s still plenty of popular films hitting Max in April, like Scott Pilgrim vs. The World,...

Most daytime talk shows save their musical performances for a particular segment, but Jennifer Hudson can’t help but break into song with her guests as often as possible. On the latest episode of the Jennifer Hudson Show, the singer welcomed music legend Smokey Robinson into her impromptu approach to re-create another spur-of-the-moment performance: Robinson singing “Ooo Baby Baby” with Aretha Franklin on Soul Train in 1979.
“I don’t remember exactly how it came about,” Robinson recalls. “I think that she was going to do a performance on Soul Train that day,...

A month ago, Sen. John Fetterman of Pennsylvania posted a selfie to X, formerly Twitter, that would shock America — and kick off weeks of feverish, unfounded claims that he had been replaced by a lookalike. The caption read, “Lost a bet to Karl.” The outcome of that wager with his teenage son was immediately obvious: instead of the trademark goatee he’d sported from his earliest days as a national political figure, he had… a mustache.

I honestly never expected Steven Spielberg in a Criterion Channel series––certainly not one that pairs him with Kogonada, anime, and Johnny Mnemonic––but so’s the power of artificial intelligence. Perhaps his greatest film (at this point I don’t need to tell you the title) plays with After Yang, Ghost in the Shell, and pre-Matrix Keanu in July’s aptly titled “AI” boasting also Spike Jonze’s Her, Carpenter’s Dark Star, and Computer Chess. Much more analog is a British Noir collection obviously carrying the likes of Odd Man Out, Night and the City, and The Small Back Room, further filled by Joseph Losey’s Time Without Pity and Basil Dearden’s It Always Rains on Sunday. (No two ways about it: these movies have great titles.) An Elvis retrospective brings six features, and the consensus best (Don Siegel’s Flaming Star) comes September 1.

At this stage of his life, you could forgive Smokey Robinson for coasting off past glories. The 83-year-old icon wrote some of the most enduring songs in American history during his time at Motown and with the Miracles, not to mention the pop hits (“Just to See You” and “One Heartbeat”) he scored in the Eighties.
But Robinson still feels a need to create, which is why his new album, Gasms, comes out April 28. It’s his first LP in nearly a decade. “I’m still in the record business and I still write songs,...

Are the Grammys over yet?
You could make a case that the 65th annual Grammy Awards telecast on CBS was a reboot of “The NeverEnding Story.” It went on. And on. And on. And then on some more. It kept going for 3 hours and 53 minutes and not a single acceptance speech was interrupted by an orchestra to play them off. Then even when it was seemingly over, there was still one more performance left, outside Crypto.com Arena in Downtown Los Angeles and fronted by a giant table of fruit.
But this isn’t a pan of the show. Far from it. It felt like a defiant celebration of all that is musical, a multi-ethnic, multi-generational party that put the performers and winners front and center. And while yes, it could have stood to be a good half-hour shorter, not at the expense of changing the Grammys to the sort...

Los Angeles was the place to be this week, especially if music is your scene. The pre-game Grammys celebrations rolled into town, luring everyone from Leonardo DiCaprio to Trevor Noah to hit the scene to see Latto, Anitta and other new chart-rising musicians perform. Meanwhile, Oscar nominations narrowed the field as the awards season raged on, with AARP holding a glittery awards show as “Elvis” stalwarts Austin Butler and Baz Luhrmann continued to be the Energizer Bunny duo on the party scene. Tom Brady quit football and started his Hollywood career this week, too; apparently no one told him that releasing a movie in January is not prime time.

“God Is Now Here”: Revisiting Matt Reeves’ Paranormal Procedural “Miracles” for Its 20th Anniversary
Matt Reeves set the tone for Miracles, a supernatural and spiritual procedural series that’s full of the director’s trademark touches.
“What’s the point of faith if it’s never tested?”
“I’m beginning to think that we’re on our own down here…”
Matt Reeves has comfortably made a name for himself as not only one of horror and science fiction’s biggest filmmakers, but he’s gone on to become the guiding force behind the latest iteration of the cinematic Batman universe. Reeves’ directorial career has been allowed to thrive the most in film, but he has a history in television and was even the co-creator of Felicity alongside J.J. Abrams. Reeves has directed episodes of Felicity, Homicide: Life on the Street, and Gideon’s Crossing, but one of his most rewarding TV efforts is his direction for the pilot for Miracles, a short-lived supernatural procedural that...

Marvin Gaye’s 1972 lost album, You’re the Man, will finally be released March 29th, just days before what would’ve been the musician’s 80th birthday, April 2nd. You’re the Man was supposed to be the follow-up to Gaye’s 1971 classic, What’s Going On. Gaye recorded the tracks for the would-be record in Detroit and Los Angeles during a particularly prolific period, but none of them – save the titular single – were released at the time.

Exclusive: DeVon Franklin, the producer behind faith-based films like Miracles from Heaven, The Star, and the forthcoming Breakthrough, has teamed with Fox Family for a live-action/ CGI musical twist on the story of the Garden of Eden, the biblical paradise introduced in the book of Genesis. The Garden will follow how the first animals and people discover the meaning of friendship, community, and unity in a world that is completely new.
The film is based on a pitch by Michael Weiss and Greg Ostrin.
“Most of us know a version of the story of the Garden of Eden, but never before has this story been told in such a unique way and it’s the first time we have the technology to see this story come to life like never before,” said Franklin, who holds an overall deal at Fox via his Franklin Entertainment shingle along with film and television producer Karen A.

A new fall TV season has finally arrived, and it’s got us feeling a bit nostalgic for long-gone series that never made it to Season 2 (or beyond). Don’t get us wrong: We’re still hooked on long-running series like Grey’s Anatomy and The Big Bang Theory, and there are plenty of sophomore-year standouts that we’re happy to have back on our screens.
But we’d be lying if we said we didn’t miss Pitch, or The Mayor, or Almost Human, or any of the dozens of quality series that were prematurely axed by the networks that aired them.

Smokey Robinson joined Aretha Franklin for a stunning rendition of the Robinson-penned “Ooo Baby Baby” on Soul Train in 1979.
At the time, Franklin was going through a commercial drought: Her last Top 20 crossover hit was released in 1974, and she hadn’t had much success with the disco wave that was sweeping the nation. Robinson was also several years removed from a pop hit, though his 1975 LP A Quiet Storm proved to be one of the most influential R&B albums of the Seventies, and few months after this performance, “Cruisin” went Top Five.

Welcome to Random Roles, wherein we talk to actors about the characters who defined their careers. The catch: They don’t know beforehand what roles we’ll ask them to talk about.
The actor: Skeet Ulrich may have spent years suffering the slings and arrows of critics who’ve described him as Johnny Depp Lite (not to mention far worse things), but it’s easy to endure these sorts of remarks when you’re in a bona fide box office sensation like Scream and co-starring in a film that‘s nominated for Best Picture (As Good As It Gets), even if your role does end up getting cut down dramatically. In recent years, Ulrich has spent the majority of his time on television, starring in such short-lived cult favorites as Miracles and Jericho, but he’s just been upped to series-regular status on the latest CW sensation, Riverdale. I attended the 2015 Texas Frightmare Weekend the same way I do every year. This year I decided to come up with a plan of attack for my interviews and convention coverage. One of the main themes of this year's Texas Frightmare Weekend was the Scream films. I decided to ask all the actors at the event a two-part question that was relevant to the Scream theme: "What's your favorite scary movie and why?"
The first interview I posted from Texas Frightmare Weekend 2015 was with Star Wars voice actor Joseph Gatt for "May the 4th Be With You" and "Revenge of the 5th" Days. I think it's only fitting to follow up that timely post with the next sensible one. I had the opportunity to pose the question to Scream's Billy Loomis himself, Skeet Ulrich. Aside from the original movie that kickstarted that franchise, he's also appeared in The Craft,...

Charlie Lyne's documentary Beyond Clueless harks back to the classic teen movies that shaped the '90s.
Featuring narration from The Craft's Fairuza Balk (and with clips of Robin Tunney, Devon Sawa and co), it made us feel a sudden pang of nostalgia and sent us on our own trip down memory lane to find out where they - and the rest of the '90s teen movie crew - are now.
So, here are 11 stars from some of our favourite '90s teen movies, and what they've gone on to do since:
1. Devon Sawa - Idle Hands (1999)
Dreamy Devon Sawa starred as lazy stoner Anton Tobias - who turns mass murderer after his hand becomes possessed - in the horror comedy Idle Hands.
He went on to play teenage prophet of doom Alex Browning in Final Destination (2000), and appeared as similarly unstable Stan in Eminem's controversial music...

Supernatural, Season 9, Episode 23: “Do You Believe in Miracles”
Written by Jeremy Carver
Directed by Thomas J. Wright
Airs Tuesdays at 9pm (Et) on The CW
Over the course of Supernatural’s ninth season, the Winchesters have faced two major threats in the form of Abaddon and Metatron. Having successfully vanquished the former, the brothers’ attention turned to the latter over the past few episodes. Metatron, however, has proven to be a trickier enemy to deal with, as he has relied on cunning to stay a step ahead of his foes, whether it’s by recruiting Gadreel to kill Kevin, or brainwashing Angels into killing themselves for Castiel. This week’s season finale sees the brothers, with the help of Castiel and Gadreel, make their final stand against the former tablet scribble, in an entertaining episode that deals a major blow to Dean.

Castiel has been a fan favorite since first appearing in "Supernatural" Season 4, but the status of Misha Collins, the actor who portrays him, has been in a constant state of flux, going from recurring to regular, back to recurring, and even switching to "Special Guest Star" in Season 8.
He's been considered a series regular this year in Season 9, and things will remain the same for Season 10; however, per TV Guide, the role Castiel will play hinges on how the battle with Metatron is resolved in the season finale, which airs on Tuesday, May 20th.
And we've just gotten hold of the synopsis for said finale, Episode 9.23, "Do You Believe in Miracles?," which you'll find below the summary of the upcoming Episode 9.22, "Stairway to Heaven."

AMC has released a teaser for its new series "Turn," which is set during the Revolutionary War. But this is not your typical patriots-vs.-Redcoats story.
The show promises to tell "the untold story of America's first spy ring," which is a novel way to explore the nation's war for independence. The series, set to premiere in the spring, stars Jamie Bell ("Billy Elliot," "Jane Eyre") as Abe Woodhull, a farmer in New York who joins a network of spies known as the Culper Ring that helps turn the war for independence in the colonists' favor. It's not entirely a popular position within his community.
The cast also includes Kevin McNally ("Pirates of the Caribbean"), Angus Macfadyen ("Chuck," "Miracles"), Daniel Henshall, Meegan Warner, Burn Gorman and Heather Lind. "Nikita" Ep Craig Silverstein created the series, which is based on the book "Washington's Spies" by Alexander Rose.

Felicity co-creator Matt Reeves is returning to television with an overall deal at 20th Century Fox TV. Under the pact, Reeves is expected to create, write and direct broadcast and cable projects as well as supervise other writers. Reeves was a feature writer-director (The Pallbearer) when he teamed with J.J. Abrams to co-create Felicity, which helped put the WB on the map. Paranormal Activity 4 has a writer and a release date. We are halfway there! The fourth installment of the wildly successful found-footage series is keeping the plot under wraps, but one can only assume that, since each installment acted as a prequel to the film before, that this one will follow suit. So who is in charge of this mystery script? Writing duties have gone to Zack Estrin. Estrin ought to have a good grasp of Paranormal Activity creator Oren Peli's style; he is one of the executive producers on Peli's TV series, The River. Estrin has written and produced for a number of genre and genre-lite TV series: No Ordinary Family, Tru Calling, Miracles, and Charmed, to name a few. Paranormal...

This pilot season is shaping up to be an especially busy one -- more than 80 new comedies and dramas are in development at the five broadcast networks. Over the next couple of weeks, we'll be spotlighting some of the projects that have caught our eye, either because of who's in them, who's making them or some combination of the two.
First up: ABC, which is taking its usual deep dive into the development pool. The network has two dozen shows in the works, and if recent history is a guide, a good third of those could end up on the air next season. Here are six we're curious to see.

Suddenly my interest in checking out CBS's new Hawaii Five-o series just went up thanks to the new casting of Grace Park as a series regular. Park played Sharon "Boomer" Valerii/Number Eight/Sharon "Athena" Agathon throughout all five seasons of the new Battlestar Galactica. She also made me forget that Boomer was originally a black man in the original BSG (no disrepect to Herbert Jefferson Jr. intended.)
Besides starring in Battlestar and being the subject of a legendary Maxim photo shoot, Grace has been working as an actress for a decade and been in shows like Stargate Sg-1, the new Outer Limits, Andromeda, The Dead Zone...well, just about every sci-fi series that's been shot in Vancouver between 2000 and 2010. ABC on Tuesday night picked up a crime drama pilot from writer Richard Hatem and director Gary Fleder.
The untitled project, from ABC Studios, centers on a beautiful female detective who teams with a disgraced ex-cop to solve crimes and untangle the conspiracy that sent him underground.
Hatem ("Miracles") wrote the script, with Fleder on board to direct.
Both are executive producing with Bert Salke and Chris Brancato.
This is the second ABC crime drama pilot for ABC Studios-based Brancato and Salke, who are also behind "True Blue."...
