Former cop Brian O'Conner is called upon to bust a dangerous criminal and he recruits the help of a former childhood friend and street racer who has a chance to redeem himself.
The part where the Corvette crashes into the Mustang on the freeway, was not planned, yet the stuntman walked away unscathed. Some parts of the ending were not scripted either, so the actors just improvised.

During the opening race why would any of the drivers Brian, Suki, Julius, & Slap Jack jump their cars at the bridge? The race was run for $3500/entrant for a total winnings of $10,500 not counting their own wager; all three cars that went over landed with enough force to cause structural damage to the vehicles, well in excess of the race winnings.
