Actress Kate Winslet is synonymous with the character of Rose from James Cameron’s disaster epic Titanic. The film saw her paired up with Leonardo DiCaprio in the doomed romance set aboard the ‘unsinkable’ Titanic in 1912. The film garnered her a Best Actress nomination at the Oscars and the film was the highest-grossing movie of all time then.
Despite earning billions, Titanic remains one of the many in Winslet’s amazing filmography. Though she is best known for her role in Cameron’s film, she has delivered far superior and mature performances since the big blockbuster. Here are three performances from Kate Winslet’s extensive filmography that are far better than Titanic.

Ariana Grande debuted an unsettling teaser Monday for “The Boy is Mine,” the eighth track on her latest album Eternal Sunshine.

The full music video, expected to be released on June 7, comes after music videos for “We Can’t Be Friends (Wait for Your Love)” and hit track “Yes, And?” came out earlier this year. Twenty years ago, Troy and its cast made its mark on epic filmmaking. Director Wolfgang Petersen’s take on Homer’s Iliad featured an ensemble cast led by Brad Pitt and created a wildly entertaining, if not entirely accurate, movie.
Working from a script by future Games of Thrones showrunner David Benioff, the Troy cast brought to life legends like Achilles, Helen of Troy, and Hector. Eric Bana, Orlando Bloom, and Diane Kruger were among those who joined Pitt in the impressive cast. While many of the actors haven’t made another film on Troy‘s scale, they continue to perform in blockbuster movies 20 years later.

Jim Carrey is one of the most prolific comic actors in Hollywood. The actor changed the way comedy stars were looked at in the industry by giving solid hits in the ‘90s with films such as Ace Venture: Pet Detective, The Mask, Liar Liar, and more. Though he has done great work in dramas such as Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, he is known for his comedic work the most.
Carrey scored a trio of incredible hits including his breakthrough release Ace Ventura. After the success of the comic book adaptation The Mask, Carrey played the role of Lloyd Christmas in the comedy Dumb and Dumber. The actor was so committed to the role of a stupid limo driver that he chipped the cap off of his tooth to give him the iconic look.

The trailer for Kate Winslet’s biopic about World War II correspondent photographer Lee Miller, Lee, shows Winslet struggling to hold a camera as bombs explode around her. Wearing a soldier’s helmet, she looks shaken and scared as she questions her life choices in voiceover: “Why does it matter? They’re just pictures.” But the emotion on her face and the trauma she subjects herself to for the pictures suggests the film, which opens in theaters on Sept. 27, will present a nuanced portrait of the photographer.

Sad tear-jerker movies are something we all need in the moments of sorrow and pain to release all our negative emotions crying alongside the characters. They get even more tearful when complicated or even impossible romantic relationships are featured, like in Ryan Gosling’s The Notebook (2004) and Anne Hathaway’s One Day (2011).
These films obviously inspired last year’s drama that takes romantic struggle to a whole other level. It focuses on the relationship of the two childhood friends, Nora and Hae Sung, who get separated by Nora’s emigration from South Korea.
A decade later, they try to reconcile via Skype calls, however, this attempt fails due to the personalities’ differences that developed during that time. Another decade later, they contact one more time, and this time Hae Sung intends to visit Nora in New York.
You can already guess how many essential issues this movie raises: the themes of emigration,...

The year 2023 was an embarrassment of riches when it came to animation. Movies like “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” became massive commercial successes and crossed the billion-dollar mark at the box office, while movies like “Nimona” and “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem” hit big with audiences and critics. There were films that boasted wildly different aesthetics and showed the power of the animation medium, like “Blue Giant” and “The First Slam Dunk.” We also saw the return of legendary animator Hayao Miyazaki, who gave us his most personal film to date with “The Boy and the Heron.”
That’s a lot for 2024 to live up to — luckily, it seems the year will bring with it a healthy mix of big studio franchises and more grown-up animated fare. There are still big and highly anticipated animated movies slated to be released in 2024. Here is a rundown of 2024 animated releases with updates to come.

Twenty years ago this month, the fairy tale-like romantic comedy “13 Going on 30” starring Jennifer Garner made its way into cinemas. The actress played Jenna Rink, a socially awkward soon-to-be 13-year-old who quickly realizes that she “hates being 13.” She makes a birthday wish to be “thirty, flirty and thriving.” With the little help of some wishing dust, she wakes up the next morning to discover that her wish has come true.
It was a defining moment in Garner’s early career. Her role as Sydney Bristow in the television action thriller series “Alias” had made her a breakout star (including at awards shows) just a few years earlier. She won the Golden Globe for Best Drama Actress in 2002 and had competed again in 2003 and earlier in 2004. She had also been nominated for two Emmy Awards one Screen Actors Guild trophy.

Morgan Freeman is one of the most respected actors in Hollywood. In his career, which has spanned nearly six decades, the actor has rightly earned a reputation for being one of the best in the business.
The Unforgiven actor has teamed up with an assortment of other artists, but his work with Jim Carrey was very special. Carrey himself is regarded as one of the most versatile actors. From comedic performances in films like The Mask, to a poignant one in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, his talent is limitless. [Editor’s note: this list was originally published in September 2019. It has been updated with new entries to coincide with the release of “Civil War.”]
Kirsten Dunst has many talents as an actor, but one of her best virtues is quite possibly just how cool she is. From her days as a teen star in “Bring It On” and “The Virgin Suicides” to her current era as an adult who takes on adventurous, ambitious roles in movies like “The Power of the Dog” and “Civil War,” Dunst has always had a charm and ease to her that has made her feel both relatable and glamorous. Part of it is her wry, catlike smile which gives her movie star looks some individuality. Part of it is her interviews, in which she projects a down-to-earth nature that feels authentic rather than put-on. And most of it comes from her choice of projects, which shows a great sense of taste and a desire to do truly great, ambitious, and weird work.

Much like the work of a classical Hollywood movie star, Kate Winslet’s power lies more in the brusque delivery of a cutting line or a piercing glance. There’s a looseness writhing to get out beneath the false composure of her characters, who are almost always marked by their prickly defiance and wit.
Whether bound inside a corset, or to the social and gender mores of a period setting (into which she’s often typecast), there’s a feral charm to her approach. It was just last week we were celebrating the 20th anniversary of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, which catapulted Michel Gondry into the Hollywood system with the likes of Be Kind Rewind and The Green Hornet. After the failure of that superhero tentpole, he retreated back to France, directing a handful of smaller-scale features, the latest of which, The Book of Solutions, gets meta following a filmmaker struggling with the editing of his big-budget project. Gondry is now mounting his return to Hollywood, the details of which have now been unveiled.
Deadline reports he’s directing an untitled coming-of-age musical, which is loosely inspired by the upbringing of Pharrell Williams. Set to star Kelvin Harrison Jr. and Da’Vine Joy Randolph, coming off her Oscar win for The Holdovers, the Universal-backed project is set in 1977 Virginia Beach. Our newest Best Supporting Actress Oscar-winner, Da’Vine Joy Randolph, looks to have her next project in view. 20 years later, and “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind” hasn’t been remotely forgotten. Michel Gondry’s science fiction romance has, if anything, enjoyed renewed attention in 2024, thanks to the release of musician Ariana Grande’s “Eternal Sunshine” album. Grande, famously a fan of the film’s leading man Jim Carrey, referenced the film both in the album’s title song, and a music video that fully recreated the mind-wiping film’s romantic storyline for the single “We Can’t Be Friends (Wait For Your Love)”. The tributes came just weeks before the film’s March 19 anniversary, and hopefully should lead to one of the 21st-century’s greatest romance films getting even more fans.

Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet forget they used to be in love in a wonderfully inventive and moving reminder of why romantic pain is an important thing to remember
The greatest screen romances are usually about failure, not happily ever afters. Love sacrificed. Love unrequited. Love forbidden by social mores or bad timing or the tectonic forces of history. Think Casablanca. Brief Encounter. In the Mood for Love. The Age of Innocence. Moonlight. Considered another way, though, they’re powerful because they end so pristinely, before the banal hassles and petty fissures of everyday life make a mess of things. Give a relationship enough time and Before Sunrise turns into Before Midnight.
One of the reasons why Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, now 20 years old, ranks among the best love stories of the 21st century is that it makes the unique argument that failure is an essential, precious part of romantic experience.

One of the reasons why Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, now 20 years old, ranks among the best love stories of the 21st century is that it makes the unique argument that failure is an essential, precious part of romantic experience.

Ari Aster has assembled an all-star cast for his next film, “Eddington,” recruiting Joaquin Phoenix, Emma Stone, Austin Butler, Pedro Pascal, Luke Grimes, Deirdre O’Connell, Micheal Ward and Clifton Collins Jr.
A24 is financing and producing the movie, which — based on Aster’s track record — we can only assume will give us nightmares. Plot details are kept under wraps besides the fact that the film “follows a small-town New Mexico sheriff with higher aspirations.”
“Eddington” starts production this week, with Aster writing, directing and producing alongside Lars Knudsen under their Square Peg banner. Two-time Academy Award nominee Darius Khondji is the director of photography.
“Eddington” marks the sixth collaboration between Square Peg and A24, which produced and distributed Aster’s previous three films — “Hereditary,” “Midsommar” and “Beau Is Afraid” — as well as “Dream Scenario” and the upcoming “Death of a Unicorn.”

“Cheech and I were on the Paramount lot after we’d done the movie, and we’re kind of trying to figure out what we were going to do next— how we were going to get another movie going,” remembers Tommy Chong of the weeks following the 1978 release of Up in Smoke, the first film from him and comedy partner Cheech Marin. “And Warren Beatty, pulls up in his convertible. He took off his sunglasses and looked at us and he goes, ‘You guys have no idea what you’ve done.’ And we looked at each other like thinking, ‘Oh, what did we do?’ What we did was we pulled a movie out of thin air.”
Up in Smoke, which was made independently by principals with no filmmaking experience, grossed over $100 million at the box office, simultaneously launching and proving the commercial value of the genre, all in one go.

“I’ve never seen someone lie like you do / So much, even you start to think it’s true / So now we play our separate scenes / Now, now she’s in my bed, mm-mm, layin’ on your chest / Now I’m in my head, wonderin’ how it ends,” Ariana sings in the first verse.

In the film Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, estranged lovers Joel and Clementine, played by Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet, undergo an experimental treatment to remove memories of each other from their brains. A wrinkle in the procedure results in Joel’s realization that erasing his pain also means forgetting the joy and happiness he shared with her.
Ariana Grande’s Eternal Sunshine takes the first part of that narrative as its inspiration, perhaps not recognizing that it’s the second bit that makes Michel Gondry’s 2014 film, the title of which was inspired by Alexander Pope’s poem “Eloisa to Abelard,” such a devastating cautionary tale. “Now I’m in my head, wonderin’ how it ends…I try to wipe my mind just so I feel less insane,” Grande sings on the title track, directly invoking the film’s plot but only vaguely acknowledging that some memories are irreversible.
