A love letter to Mark Hamill’s great Comic-Con set mockumentary.
When I was in college, some friends and I had a ritual we’d do on nights where several of us were bored. We’d grab my friend Joe’s high-8 camera and wander into the bowels of the library to shoot our own improvised movies. These were all done with editing-in-the-camera, meaning we shot in sequence, one shot at a time with no post-production work. We never started with a script, though by the end we were bringing along an array of costumes and props.
None of these were great films, but there was an infectious energy about them. The first film was just myself and Joe, and we took turns holding the camera depending on which of us was in the shot. We had fun but wouldn’t have repeated the experiment had the friends we showed it to not said, “When...

Hello again, dear readers. I hope you’re enjoying the summer movie season. This week takes a break from the big blockbusters, with the two major releases being Clint Eastwood’s musical Jersey Boys and the completely unnecessary comedy sequel Think Like a Man Too. And in the spirit of offbeat releases, this week’s slightly-delayed installment of Trailer Trashin’ features the upcoming comedy-drama Birdman.
Premise: Washed-up actor Riggan Thomson (Michael Keaton) – famous for playing the iconic superhero Birdman – struggles to mount a Broadway play, an adaptation of Raymond Carver’s 1981 short story collection What We Talk About When We Talk About Love. In the days leading up to opening night, he battles his ego and attempts to recover his family, his career, and himself.
My take: For people my age and younger, it’s getting hard to remember a time when superheroes haven’t been a huge part of movies.

"I would laugh too if an acid bath only bleached my skin."
After donning his voice to numerous tv episodes, feature length animated adventures, and video games (including Arkham Asylum 2), Mark Hamill announced today that he will no longer be voicing The Joker.
Sad news indeed, as a fan of the animated series and games, I will most likely not the first to say that whoever steps in his place can only at best mimic the role of Joker that Hamill has perfected better than any other over the years.
Now Heath Ledger nation can rain down on me for saying he is not the reigning Joker of all time, but lets give credit where credit is due shall we? Here's a comparison of Heath Ledger and Jack Nicholson laughing in their respective psycho clown personas.
Now Hamill.
I think you see my point. In more promising and less shoving...

Lloyd Kaufman
By Scott Zakarin
(April 2011)
Lloyd Kaufman is a scoundrel to the studio system, a rebel to the film festival independents and a hero to the filmmakers who don’t fit into the models that are general accepted as what movies are supposed to be. His production company Troma Entertainment (co-founded with partner Michael Herz) has been making movies with titles like “The Toxic Avenger,” “Class of Nuke ’Em High” and “Tromeo and Juliet” for almost 40 years.
The films have one thing in common: They are fun. Kaufman’s films don’t take themselves too seriously. Instead, they celebrate true independence, where the boundaries of what is considered acceptable has no bounds. A graduate of Yale University, Kaufman is fiercely intelligent and incredibly driven, and despite his outlier status, he has an incredible track record of profitable releases.

Mark Hamill is to direct a big-screen version of his comic book miniseries The Black Pearl.
He announced the project, a £5 million ($7million) movie to be made through new production company Berkeley Square Films, at the Cannes Film Festival.
Published by Dark Horse Comics in 1996, the five-part comic focuses on Luther Drake, a troubled man who takes the law into his own hands when a neighbour is kidnapped.
Hamill (pictured), best known for his Luke Skywalker role in three of the Star Wars films, said the project was originally penned as a screenplay 14 years ago but then ended up being turned into a comic book.
The title will be adapted for the screen by Hamill, The Fighter scribe Paul Tamasy and writing partner Eric Johnson. The comic is a "dark, edgy thriller" and Hamill hopes the film will get an adult rating.

Mark Hamill (otherwise known as Luke Skywalker or The Joker depending on what camp you’re in) has been given the chance to bring a much treasured personal project to the big screen – his comicbook miniseries, The Black Pearl. The project will arrive via new production and financing arm, Berkeley Square Films according to Variety.
The project, which was originally penned for the screen 14 years ago, was released in comicbook form by Dark Horse Comics in 1996. The project has been given a (very) modest budget of just $7 million. This from Variety:

Looks like Luke Skywalker himself may be setting his sights on getting behind the camera again, if his recent comments at the Los Angeles Comedy Shorts Festival are to be believed. Mark Hamill recently took part in a panel entitled "Famous People Talkin' About Sh*t", where he revealed that he is working on an upcoming project that he is not allowed to announce until Cannes. He hinted that it would be based on a comic book that he wrote, and that "at first glance it’s a drama, but it has dark humor." He seems to be referring to The Black Pearl (no relation to Pirates of the Caribbean), a five-part mini-series that he wrote about a man who becomes a costumed vigilante after he prevents a crime and the media turns him into a hero. Hamill is best known nowadays as a voice actor (many believe his take...

Mark Hamill, the once known Luke Skywalker turned voice for The Joker, is turning behind the camera to possibly direct the film adaptation of his comic book creation, The Black Pearl.
The news comes from The Wrap, where they believe Hamill will direct his own comic creation yet an official announcement will not be made until his partners are ready to talk at the Cannes Film Festival in May.
The facts stated by the Hamill in the interview say the project he is trying to get off the ground is “at first glance a drama, but it has dark humor.” The site speculates that it is based on a comic book that Hamill wrote, which is also set in the real world.

Mark Hamill has come a long way from playing Luke Skywalker in the first 'Star Wars' trilogy. And if the news we’re hearing is accurate, his next move could be bringing his comic book work to the big screen.

Dimension Films has pre-emptively bought John Unholz's superhero spoof Comic Book: The Movie. The spec, which was bought for mid-six against seven figures, went out wide Thursday morning and was acquired by Dimension on Thursday night after drawing interest from multiple studios. Described as in the vein of the Scary Movie franchise and the recent boxoffice hit Date Movie, Comic Book is a spoof of comic book-based films. There are no producers or director attached yet. Alexander Franklin is shepherding for Dimension. Dimension, which has a history of success lampooning the horror genre with its Scary Movie franchise, also had been developing the satire Superhero! with Scary Movie 3 filmmakers David Zucker, Craig Mazin and Robert Weiss. That project has had no new movement in more than a year. Unholz, a former TV scribe who was a staff writer on WB Network's Hype, sold the TV pilot Operator Standing By to Happy Madison Prods. Comic Book marks his first foray into feature film writing. He is repped by manager Dave Chariton at Miners Mills Entertainment and attorney Mark Wetzstein.
Creative Light Entertainment has signed a first-look production/distribution deal covering film, television and home entertainment with Miramax Films and announced that the first release under the deal will be the semifictional documentary Comic Book: The Movie, starring and directed by Mark Hamill. Slated for a fall release, Comic Book is an improv film in the vein of Waiting for Guffman that follows the antics of the world's biggest comic fan, who has been hired to direct a documentary about his favorite comic book heroes of all time. It was filmed on location at the world's largest comic book convention, San Diego Comic Con, and features numerous cameos from such notable pop-culture figures as Spider-Man creator Stan Lee, Playboy founder Hugh Hefner, director Kevin Smith and The Simpsons creator Matt Groening, among others.
