When an old enemy, the Cylons, resurface and obliterate the 12 colonies, the crew of the aged Galactica protect a small civilian fleet - the last of humanity - as they journey toward the fabled 13th colony, Earth.
In the miniseries, the pilot of Colonial One is heard establishing contact with Gemanon Liner 1701, a nod to Star Trek. Ronald D. Moore was part of the production crew of Star Trek: The Next Generation.
Crewman Specialist Cally:
Starbuck's notes on the Cylon Raider are a mess! She said the engine power-up sequence began... "By squeezing something that looks like a red ligament with blue veins on the right side... coming out of a sack of gooey fluid... shaped like a dog".
Chief Petty Officer Tyrol: ...
In the miniseries pilot, Colonel Tigh says no one has attempted a jump in 20 or 22 years, yet, a few minutes later, just as they execute the jump, Cally observes that she "hates this part". This is actually not a mistake however as Cally is referring to having experienced jumps many times through training simulations.
The second half of the opening credits for the first season is a montage of quick teaser clips from the current week's episode. Ron D. Moore said he took the idea from "Space: 1999". This was removed at the beginning of the second season, but later reinstated.
