An undercover cop and a mole in the police attempt to identify each other while infiltrating an Irish gang in South Boston.
One of the reasons Martin Scorsese agreed to direct this movie, was because it reminded him of one his favorite movies White Heat (1949), a film-noir starring James Cagney, also partly about an undercover police officer embedded with a charismatic gangster.

(at around 24 mins) At the early police briefing on the Chinese threats of getting chips for their long distance rockets, the missiles on the screen are Russian SAM anti-aircraft rockets.
The title doesn't appear on screen until nearly 20 minutes into the movie.
