An undercover cop and a mole in the police attempt to identify each other while infiltrating an Irish gang in South Boston.
When the film won the Oscar for Best Picture, Martin Scorsese said that he was surprised the film had won. Scorsese said that because the film is such a tough, nasty, and violent film he never thought about the idea of awards while he was filming it.

In the scene where Colin is interviewing Fitzy as his "lawyer", Fitzy is seen talking on the phone but when the camera goes back to Colin you can see Fitzy in the mirror with his hands folded not using the phone. The camera then goes back to Fitzy and he is still on the phone.
The title doesn't appear on screen until nearly 20 minutes into the movie.
