Roberto Rodriguez (the main character) is named after Nicolás López's idol, Robert Rodriguez. Lopez finally met him during the press junket of Sin City (2005), because Rodriguez's wife and producer Elizabeth Avellan loved the movie (she watched it in the SXSW Film Festival after reading a letter that Lopez sent to Rodriguez begging him to watch the movie).
'Benjamin Vicuña' (Fele) was sick during the shooting and the production used a double in some scenes in which you cant see the face of the character.
The movie is based on Nicolás Lopez's weekly column "Memorias de un pingüino" (memories of a penguin) that the wrote during his high school years from 1997 to 1999 in the Chilean newspaper El Mercurio. The best columns were published in the book "Promedio Rojo: how to study cinema making your own movie", that was released as a tie-in for the movie, featuring also the screenplay of the movie, marketing, storyboards and a life diary of Lopez
The movie was number one at the Chilean Box Office for two weeks, beating the Exorcist Prequel and A Shark Tale
Miguel Asensio, the producer of the movie, was the "second unit director" (uncredited). He directed the pseudo-kung-fu fight that you can see in TV in the scene when the Grandpa of Roberto
