For a short film, this is one is solid.
Most short films that receive praise suck. Let's face it. Film is a conservative art form, and for the most part people who give out awards love to bestow them on films that don't take risks, and aren't creative. But this film, while widely praised and held up as one of the best shorts to come out of Loyola Marymount University's film program in the last few years, does not fit into this trend. It deserves all the praise it has received. Plain and simple, "Paul is Dead," is good. Or, if you want, solid. It stands on it's own two feet as an entertaining piece of cinema, and would make anyone proud to call it their directing debut. Unlike many films that are given lip service at film festivals, "Paul is Dead," will not make you feel like you just wasted seven minutes of your life. It is funny, concise, and smart.
