Plenty of shows these days embrace their inner batshit insanity. Challenging norms via wild narratives or atypical execution is so deep within their nature that the show thrives on such inherent madness. Here at IndieWire, we refer to such efforts as “bonkers” TV, and Hulu’s latest original series, “Shut Eye,” could certainly be a candidate if it ever fully leans into its freshly bizarre elements.
After all, this is a show that constructs a climactic scene in which a woman walks between two rows of gypsies in a candlelit East L.A. mansion as the offended parties spit on her. And that’s just the start of her punishment for breaking the gypsy code. What comes next is enough to make even hardened TV viewers raise an eyebrow.

Zayas will be Eduardo Magana, a wealthy and trusted client of Jeffrey Donovan's character, Charlie.

It may have gone out with a whimper rather than a bang, but Dexter won’t be remembered for its finale. It’ll be remembered for fully committing to its bonkers premise of a serial killer who channels his violent urges into only dispatching other serial killers; for a truly great ensemble cast; and for that meme of Doakes saying variations on “surprise, motherf*cker.”
The show, which starred Michael C. Hall in the eponymous role, actually had a good line in making the main character seem sympathetic, whilst at the same time pitting him against some truly heinous adversaries. The Following hasn’t got anything on the number of depraved, nasty pieces of work Dexter Morgan wrapped in cling film, all to the delight of the legions of fans the show earned over eight seasons.

Dexter actor David Zayas will portray Gotham mob boss Salvatore Maroni...
Those anticipating the upcoming Gotham TV series, which will focus on the rise of criminality in the city before Batman turned up, may appreciate this nugget of casting news.
David Zayas, who you may recognise as Angel Batista from Dexter, is joining the show as significant mob boss Salvatore Maroni.
Maroni was played in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight by Eric Roberts, and has also featured heavily in loads of iconic comics, including The Long Halloween (which we deemed movie-worthy many moons ago).
Generally attributed as having a large part in turning Harvey Dent into Two-Face, Maroni is a man comprehensively capable of causing headaches for The World’s Greatest Detective, so should be an interesting addition to a world which doesn’t yet have his help.
Rival mob boss Carmine Falcone will be played by John Doman of The Wire fame,...

Last weekend, I had the opportunity to watch the pilot for Fox’s Batman prequel, Gotham. It was one of the best pilot episodes I’ve seen in recent memory. They really have created a rich, expansive world that begs to be explored further. Every member of the cast remained faithful and familiar to those beloved and infamous characters while, at the same time, bringing something new and exciting. Even though the many unknown actors were most entrancing (Robin Lord Taylor as Oswald Cobblepot is a revelation!), the more well-known actors also disappeared into their new roles.
The casting choices have been perfect so far, so I fully trust they’ll make good use of Dexter’s David Zayas, who has been cast as mafia boss Salvatore Maroni. The character was previously featured in The Dark Knight, and was played by Eric Roberts.

David Zayas is crossing the thin blue line in his next role. The actor, best known for playing a homicide detective on “Dexter,” will join Fox's freshman series “Gotham” in a recurring villainous role, a show representative told TheWrap. Zayas will play Salvatore Maroni, who should be familiar to comic-book fans as a notorious mobster trying to control the drug trade and corrupt unions. On “Gotham,” he will battle for supremacy against his rival, Falcone (John Doman). David Zayas, best know as Lt. Angel Batista on Showtime's "Dexter" and as Enrique Morales on "Oz," has joined the cast of Fox‘s Batman prequel series "Gotham".
Zayas will play the recurring role of mob boss Salvatore Maroni, a dangerous gangster and a violent rival to the city's biggest crime kingpin Carmine Falcone (John Doman). The pair are duking it out for control of the city, whilst Jada Pinkett Smith's Fish Mooney and Robin Taylor Lord's Oswald Cobblepot are wild cards who could disrupt the battle.
In the comics Maroni was infamous for disfiguring D.A. Harvey Dent, which lead to his transformation into Two-Face. Eric Roberts portrayed the role in "The Dark Knight".

What does the final season of Showtime’s Dexter hold for the intrepid Miami Metro team?
First, there’s a new “Big Bad” this season dubbed The Brain Surgeon (he removes little pieces of his victim’s brains, you see). Plus, there’s the matter of Capt. Maria Laguerta’s death in last season’s finale at the hands of Debra (Jennifer Carpenter). That storyline initially takes a backseat since Miami Metro thinks it’s a closed case and doesn’t realize Deb and Dex (Michael C. Hall) were involved. But somehow we suspect her case won’t remain shut all season.

It's been a busy week for Dexter! In anticipation for the upcoming 8th and final season, Showtime has unveiled two new teaser spots, one focusing on Deb, the other Dexter.
David Zayas (who plays Angel) gives us a peek behind-the-scenes and introduces us to his son and stand in.
But first, some casting news: Julian Sands has been brought in to play Miles Foster, a "wealthy international businessman." No further details are being revealed, which I imagine means that he is a major player in the season. Sands has an impressive list of genre credits to his name, including roles in Dario Argento's Phantom of the Opera, Warlock, Arachnophobia, Naked Lunch, Boxing Helena, Tale of the Vampire, and Turn of the Screw.
Dexter returns to Showtime for its eighth and final season on June 30th.

Somebody needs to call the Poe-Poe, because this show has broken every law of good television.
What started out as a fun, frothy, ghoulish melange of police procedural and serial killer fantasia has devolved into an absolute dumpster fire of a show. It's not fun, it's not clever, it's not compelling, and it's not remotely believable anymore - and this episode's stupidity put the final nail into the coffin of the show that should, in the words of Edgar Allen Poe, be "Buried Alive".
Still, because I am contractually obligated to cover this episode... and there may be a gay character tucked into a crawlspace somewhere, here we go:
Jacob (Nico Tortorella) wakes up to the sight of a supremely ripped, towel-clad (and somehow not-dead) Paul (Adan Canto) entering the room. Jacob then finds Emma (Valorie Curry) dead in the shower. Wait, is this Jacob's dream sequence or mine?...

Apparently, we're going to learn new things about Dexter, who might be investigating Laguerta's murder case, and more. To start off with, Scott explained that Deb's kill was different because it was done out love, stating, "What’s so different about this kill, as opposed to anything that Dexter does, is that it was done of out love; it was done to protect someone she cared about." Next, he revealed that Deb and Dexter will be bonded even more by this experience, stating, "It certainly bonds them, but some of the things that can bond people together are not positive. Showtime’s re-energized seventh season of Dexter delivered a finale twist that’s arguably the most disturbing moment of the series: Debra Morgan (Jennifer Carpenter) murdered Miami Metro police captain María Laguerta (Lauren Velez) to protect her serial killer brother (Michael C. Below, showrunner Scott Buck takes our burning questions.

“Born in blood, both of us. Harry was right. I thought I could change what I am, keep my family safe. But it doesn’t matter what I do, what I choose. I’m what’s wrong. This is fate.”
Dexter Morgan first uttered that sad sentiment during Dexter‘s Season 4 finale, when, in his mind, they applied only to himself and the Showtime saga’s now-infamous Big Bad, Arthur “Trinity” Mitchell. In retrospect, however, said musings represented so much more, foreshadowing the tragic future ahead for the Dark Passenger and his sister Deb.

We’ve crossed the halfway point in Dexter Season 7. Here’s the current rundown on key characters and relationships, ranked by grade.
The Villain – Isaak Sirko (Ray Stevenson)
Starting with the Ice Truck Killer in Season 1, Dexter became known for its remarkable villains. However, that all came to an end after John Lithgow stole the show as Trinity in Season 4. Season 5 featured Jordan Chase (Jonny Lee Miller), a motivational speaker by day and sexual deviant by night. He was bland to say the least. Then, Season 6 hit us with the Doomsday curve ball – mark it just plain bad.
Season 7 finally takes us back to a villain we can truly fear. Not only is Isaak Sirko Russian mafia, he’s also wicked awesome in a fight. He’s the kind of boss who has no problems with getting his hands dirty. In Episode 7.5, Dexter (Michael C. Hall) put him behind bars.

Chicago – Did “Dexter” die when The Trinity Killer murdered Rita? It was such a daring, brilliant move for what was one of TV’s greatest shows at the time. But that was three seasons ago now, and while I personally liked the 5th season quite a bit, audiences seemed to turn off a bit. The sound of frustration turned deafening with the 6th season, easily the worst in the show’s history, and now the award-winning drama is starting its 7th chapter amidst questions of whether or not its jumped the shark. The first few episodes of the new season do little to alleviate this longtime fan’s feelings that the show should have ended its run before now.

“Leave It To Beavers” Air Date: 4/27/2012
We begin, as with every Grimm episode, with an excerpt from The Brothers Grimm in Microsoft Word’s papyrus font that previews the plot. This week it concerns the toll to be paid for passing the troll’s bridge. From there, we open on our titular hero Nick, who gathers weapons from his Aunt’s armory and then heads to the woods, where, within moments, he’s tackled by a blutbaden, but not just any blutbaden, our favorite sidekick, Monroe himself. The pair are actually engaged in training, and this is the first instance we’ve seen Nick actually learning how to fight these monsters he’s tracking down. While it’s short, it’s necessary, because I was wondering how Nick could defend himself against all these beasts in hand to hand combat, and this makes it a tad more believable (of course,...

While there, Nick and Monroe need to pretend like they barely know each other, and the weirdness oozes out of the screen.

What is it with "Grimm" and hiring people who have worked on creepy shows? The latest person to follow this trend is "Dexter" star David Zayas as he will guest on an upcoming episode of the haunted procedural.
Zayas, who is best known for playing Angel Batista on the Showtime series, will play a giant troll-like creature called a Hasslich. TVLine is reporting that Zayas's character is a building inspector who runs a racketeering scam. But he starts to face problems when some people, the beaver-like Eisbibers, reject his demands.
Past "Grimm" guest stars have come from shows like "The Vampire Diaries," "Lost," "True Blood" and "American Horror Story."

In the Fall of 2012, Dexter will return for Season 7 and fans will be wondering how Dexter (Michael C. Hall) will deal with his latest debacle. Here is a rundown of what fans can look forward to.
Note: This article contains Season 6 finale Spoilers
The Dexter Season 7 Premiere
Instead of a time jump between seasons, expect Season 7 to begin right in the Church where the Season 6 finale left off. This will be similar to the shift between the Season 4 Trinity finale and the Season 5 premiere. Fans would be upset with any sort of time jump, especially after such a major cliffhanger. Unlike other shows with longer seasons that go on 2-month hiatuses, fans have to wait a full nine months until Dexter returns for its seventh run.

Unlike other shows with longer seasons that go on 2-month hiatuses, fans have to wait a full nine months until Dexter returns for its seventh run.

The killer (or killers as only Dexter knows) has now been named. Miami Metro is on the hunt for its latest serial killer and he’s been dubbed the Doomsday Killer. Unlike past seasons, Miami’s finest has already narrowed down the suspect list to Professor Gellar (Edward James Olmos), or ex-professor as the case may be. After some stoned detective work by Angel (David Zayas) and Quinn (Desmond Harrington), Miami Metro learned that Professor Gellar used to preach about the end of the world. He was fired from the University three years ago after he was accused of stealing an artifact – the sword of John the Revelator (according to popular belief the Apostle John wrote the Book of Revelations). The story matched Masuka’s (C.S. Lee) discovery of iron rust found in the wounds of each victim – pointing to a possible pre-Middle Ages artifact. Geller also had a website...

One... two... Dexter's coming for you. We're only a few short weeks off from the Dexter Season 5 premiere and the anticipation continues to rise. Will Quinn (Desmond Harrington) fill the void left by Doakes (Erik King) after Season 2? How will Dexter (Michael C. Hall) cope with single-dad-angry-tween drama? What's next for Lt. Laguerta (Lauren Vélez) and Angel Batista (David Zayas)? David Zayas has his own ideas on that relationship. How will Dexter Season 5 ever top Season 4 without a scare-you-psycho Trinity killer played by the incomparable John Lithgow? And, will this finally be the season when Deb (Jennifer Carpenter) learns the truth about Dexter's dark passenger? We can only hope. Check out the new poster art for Dexter Season 5. It says it all. At the TV.com Now awards, we got the chance to speak with David Zayas, who stars as Angel Batista on Showtime's Dexter. We, of course, wanted to get the low down on what's going to happen in Season 5, but also got to know a little bit about what makes Mr. Zayas geek out at an event like Comic-Con. And, while he's just as in the dark about what will happen next season as we are, he does share some musings on what the aftermath of the Season 4 finale is going to be and what he thinks Batista and new wife Maria Laguerta (Lauren Velez) will go through. Other than that we found out that he's an extremely cool guy and a New York Jets fan. [jambovideo id="229185" wide="yes" /]...

Like most fellow Shock readers out there, I myself am a huge fan of Showtime's original series Dexter . So, while visiting the set of the Strause brothers new alien sci-fi thriller Skyline , this writer couldn't help but be excited to suddenly be sharing balcony space with actor David Zayas, who portrays Angel Batista on the hit cable series. The view we're sharing overlooks all of Marina Del Ray and provides for the perfect backdrop to our conversation, which covers his entire career including his humble beginnings as a stage actor in New York where he also served as a New York City cop (!) for 15 years. While the majority of our chat revolved around his role in Skyline , we couldn't help but eventually steer the talk towards Dexter , which enters its fifth season this fall....

Though he shares a name with his character on Showtime's hit "Weeds," actor Guillermo Diaz is nothing like a shady, menacing drug dealer. In real life, he's closer to his other current television character: the sweet and funny Angel on NBC's drama "Mercy." Diaz has a long résumé, respect from indie-film fans as well as comedy lovers (including this writer, who often quotes his character's lines from "Half Baked"), and a villain role in Kevin Smith's upcoming film "Cop Out" with Bruce Willis and Tracy Morgan. For Diaz, it all began by picking up a copy of Back Stage. Growing up in Washington Heights, N.Y., Diaz didn't know he wanted to be an actor until he was 17. During a high school talent show, he lip-synched to a medley of Beastie Boys songs as rapper Mike D. The performing bug bit and never went away. He started buying Back Stage...

Skyline, the next feature to be directed by brothers Colin and Greg Strause, has added another new cast member: Crystal Reed, who will also be seen in MTV's upcoming "Teen Wolf" reboot.
Per Variety Reed joins the previously announced Kate Mara, Eric Balfour, and Laz Alonso on the project.
Update: Per Styd, David Zayas, better known as Dexter's Angel Batista, has also signed on and will play a character named "Oliver".
Skyline goes into production in early February; here's the basic plot outline:
"After a late night party, a group of friends are awoken in the dead of the night by an eerie light beaming through the window. Like moths to a flame, the light source is drawing people outside before they suddenly vanish into the air. They soon discover an otherwordly force is swallowing the entire human population off the face of the earth. Now our band of...

I think there are a couple of new episodes of Dexter before the holiday hiatus and the newest one appears to be airing on December 6th. Showtime has released a synopsis and several promo photos for the episode, which we have for you below.
Dexter's worst fears have been realized. Because of Debra's unrelenting pursuit, Miami Metro is just one step away from discovering the identity of the Trinity Killer. And Dexter can't let that happen.
Arthur's arrest would not only deprive Dexter of a satisfying kill, it would also expose the secret life Dexter's been leading in his pursuit of this monster. Dexter must take drastic action to buy himself time to deal with Trinity in his own fashion. Meanwhile, Rita decides to confide in Dexter, which doesn't go as well as she'd hoped.
Laguerta and Batista's breach of ethics paints them into a very tight corner.

A new episode of Dexter will be airing on November 8 and Debra starts digging into her father's past, which, of course, starts to concern Dexter. Thanks to Showtime, we have a promo, photos, a synopsis and a sneak peek to share with you
Dexter finds himself enjoying a brief moment of tranquility. He’s finally managed to strike a balance between work, family… and other pursuits. But he’s keenly aware that times like these aren’t meant to last. When Miami Metro discovers a string of murders connected to a prominent photographer, Dexter sees an opportunity for a clean kill.
However, his plans seem to be thwarted every step of the way. Quinn has taken a renewed interest in Dexter’s nightlife. Dexter’s plans to keep Astor and Cody distracted with new activities soon backfire.

Thinking outside the box when it comes to naming babies goes part and parcel with being a celebrity, and in their search to come up with the perfect moniker some have clearly pushed that envelope more than others. According to nameberry.com co-founder Linda Rosenkrantz, word names are an increasingly popular way to do just that.
“When looking for a really unusual baby name, many celebrities have started to search the dictionary for a noun or adjective that will define their child, choosing words that have rarely, if ever been used before as people-names,” she explains.

One of the things that makes Showtime’s hit series Dexter so enjoyable is the fact that the titular serial killer (played by Michael C. Hall) isn’t the only person worth watching. The show sports a cast of supporting characters who aren’t only utilized for good one-liners, but have deeply personal stories that make them real and relatable amidst all the mayhem. Among the employees of the show’s fictional Miami police force, Angel Batista, played by David Zayas, is a highlight, and a guy audiences can genuinely care about.
While this is partially due to the series’ strong writing, it also has a lot to do with the actor who plays Batista, David Zayas. A New York City native and longtime Fango fan, Zayas has been doing solid work in character roles for some time now, and the coming year seems likely to be his biggest yet.

Based on a handful of Dexter spoilers, we already know that the show's main character will have his season four hands full with a new baby and a new serial killer in town.
But what about everyone's favorite sergeant, Angel Batista? TV Guide Magazine spoke to David Zayas about what lies ahead for his character:
“They're going to explore a lot of different things with Angel Batista. Work challenges. New romances. It's going to be really interesting for him this season.”
Yes, multiple romances, Zayas confirmed. Various reports have actually linked him romantically with Maria Laguerta.
“I think it's the kind of season that just goes full force, straight ahead, everything happening. It's really fun,” the actor said. “We have John Lithgow as our guest star this season... I think he brings a lot of class. He brings a lot of great work ethic. I've seen John Lithgow onstage, on...

Here I was thinking that The Expendables, Sly Stallone's mercenary movie, was just a boy's club. But Brittany Murphy apparently has the keys to get inside the inner circle, and has landed a part in the film as Mickey Rourke's girlfriend, a nightclub singer. I realize that Rourke is Oscar-nominated and on top of the world right now, but has the 56-year-old "ground up piece of meat" really earned a 30-year-old on-screen girlfriend? THR also isn't explaining where Murphy will fit into the story, given that most of the film takes place in Brazil, where Rourke, Stallone, Jason Statham, Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren and Randy Couture are all on a mission to overthrow a dictator. David Zayas, who plays Angel Batista on Dexter, has also joined the cast. But I think he can understand that, since he's not making out with Mickey Rourke onscreen, we're paying a little less...

If you thought becoming a family man would soften the Bay Harbor Butcher's resolve, guess again.
The trades have announced that Showtime has picked up Dexter for an additional two seasons. Currently in its third year, Dexter is Showtime's top-rated drama series. The show averages 2.5 million viewers per week, and is likely to exceed three million viewers when DVR and on-demand numbers roll in.
"I thought at best we would attract a devoted cult audience but soon realized that, ironically, this show is so thematically rich and layered with humanity that audiences of all kinds have flocked to it," says Showtime president of entertainment Robert Greenblatt of Dexter's success.
Executive producer Clyde Phillips tells E! Online that he's elated by the news, especially considering that he and his co-workers were not convinced that this season would enjoy the success of previous years.
