In the 17th century, two Portuguese Jesuit priests travel to Japan in an attempt to locate their mentor, who is rumored to have committed apostasy, and to propagate Catholicism.
In October 2016, Producer Irwin Winkler said that he personally believes this film is the best that Martin Scorsese has ever made. Winkler produced Scorsese's films New York, New York (1977), Raging Bull (1980), and Goodfellas (1990), and was an Executive Producer on The Wolf of Wall Street (2013).
