In 2017, actor Mukesh Rishi revealed that he felt ashamed while saying his character Bulla's dialogues. There was a mixed feeling of shame and guilt, and he constantly questioned himself why he was doing this in the first place.
The original title of the film was Goondagiri but later changed to Gunda.
Upon its release in 1998, the film was withdrawn from theaters because the CBFC (Central Board of Film Certification) received complaints from college girls who felt offended by the violence and vulgarity in the film.
According to Deepak Shirke, who played politician Bachubhai, the film was shot without a script. The director Kanti Shah visited him and narrated the story in one line, following which he instantly agreed to do the film.
Based on Ishrat Ali's dialogues, it can be safely assumed that his character Lambu Atta and Mukesh Rishi's character Bulla were previously in a homosexual relationship and their fallout might have been one of the key factors for both holding extreme animosity towards each other.
