Hardie is in town to testify at the trial of a young man, Henry Lambert, for armed robbery. The delinquent won't reveal the name of his partner because he's convinced that his confederate will make sure Hardie doesn't testify by scaring the Wells Fargo agent out of town or having him killed. Lambert's sister, Mary, arrives and tries to convince Hardie to leave or change his testimony after hotel owner Sam Adams points out Hardie who is reluctant to talk to her. When Hardie refuses to run and then guns down the first outlaw sent to kill him, John Wesley Hardin arrives in town who Hardie suspects was hired to finish the job. Hardie refuses to take Hardin's bait but it signals to Hardie who the partner may be.
