After graduating from Emory University, top student and athlete Christopher McCandless abandons his possessions, gives his entire $24,000 savings account to charity and hitchhikes to Alaska to live in the wilderness. Along the way, Christopher encounters a series of characters that shape his life.
Jim Gallien, the Alaskan who gave Chris the rubber boots in the opening scene, plays himself.
Mom! Mom! Help me.
After Chris leaves Slab City there is a Union Pacific locomotive that runs beside the highway. That locomotive has an American flag painted on the side. Union Pacific did not paint American Flags on their locomotives until the 2000s.
The opening title is shown as part of Chris's journal's writings.
