  • There's no doubt about it, staying up late in middle and high school to listen to Dr. Demento's radio program was one of a number of factors making me the weirdo I am today. That he had at least two television specials was great, the shame being that he didn't have more. He seemed perhaps a little uncomfortable on camera, perhaps being more used to only being heard - although he had previous been in Fish Heads and I believe he lectures as well.

Once upon a time, MTV actually played music videos, and actually embraced weirdness. Hard to imagine these days!

Some of the videos were visually weird, some were somewhat more conventional videos accompanying weird songs or weird bands. I used to watch the tapes I'd made more often than I do now - pulled them out of the closet not sure if I even had them any more. It would be great if MTV could return to its roots and rebroadcast these, perhaps with new Demented specials, or at least release them on DVD.
