Channing Dungey, the first African American to lead a U.S. broadcast network, has departed her role as president, ABC Entertainment. Karey Burke, head of original programming for cable channel Freeform, has been tapped to replace her.
Dungey’s departure comes as corporate parent Disney prepares for a massive overhaul of its television business units tied to the pending acquisition of 21st Century Fox. Last month, Disney announced that Fox executive Peter Rice would take over the entirety of Disney’s non-sports TV operations, with fellow Fox veteran Dana Walden tapped to oversee ABC, Freeform, and Disney’s television-studio operations. The arrangement would have seen Dungey report to Walden, who had been co-head of Fox Broadcasting and 20th Century Fox Television.
“I’m grateful to Channing for her significant contributions and unwavering dedication to the success of ABC over the past 14 years,” said Disney CEO Bob Iger. “I’ve thoroughly...

Nick Searcy’s “Gosnell: The Trial of America’s Biggest Serial Killer” doesn’t so much play like a movie as it does an oversized episode of “Law & Order.” The events have been ripped from horrifying headlines. The first half is all about catching a killer. The second half is about prosecuting him. And when its done, you can’t help but feel you didn’t get the whole story.
Unlike “Law & Order,” Searcy’s film isn’t just inspired by reality. “Gosnell” tells the story of Kermit Gosnell, a doctor who ran a Pennsylvania abortion clinic which, for many years, operated in unsafe, unclean and unprofessional conditions. His staff was untrained. His methods were monstrous. Gosnell was directly responsible for the death of at least one patient, and gave illegal, late-term “abortions” by killing living infants outside of the womb.

Every new TV show is a gamble. That’s especially true in the crowded fall season, when the networks roll out an array of new shows. Many of them won’t make it to a second season – and even if they do, it takes years for a TV show to turn a profit. There are ways to mitigate the risk, of course. You cast a recognizable actor. You work with a successful producer – look, there’s Ryan Murphy doing his Ryan Murphy thing with The New Normal! And even in the modern era of DVR and downloading, a good timeslot is still essential.

You may recall that we told you back at the end of February that True Blood showrunner Alan Ball will be stepping down from that position at the conclusion of Season 5, which premieres June 10. According to HBO, Ball will take a “supervisory role” on the show and no longer have daily responsibilities for any subsequent seasons, if there are going to be any future seasons, leaving Ball free to develop new shows for HBO and Cinemax per their agreement.
Truebie fever is raging on, though, and HBO has taken note, as EW is reporting that HBO has lined up Mr. Ball’s Season 6 replacement. He is co-executive producer Mark Hudis, who has been working with Ball in the writers’ room since last year’s Season 4, and whose previous credits include Nurse Jackie and Miss Guided.

(Season five premieres June 10.) It’s most certainly not a surprise to see Judy Greer in yet another movie, as the actress tends to keep particularly busy, but Alexander Payne’s The Descendants? As my fondest memories of Greer include here iconic comedic performances in films like Jawbreaker and 13 Going on 30 as well as her TV show Miss Guided, which left us far too soon, seeing her pull the reigns on what comes so naturally to her and amp up the drama wasn’t just a nice surprise, but a notably successful effort, too. It's a 'Miss Guided' reunion on 'Two and a Half Men' this season as it's been announced that star Judy Greer has signed on for a recurring role on the comedy.
According to TV Guide, Greer will appear in several episodes playing Bridget, the soon-to-be ex-wife of Ashton Kutcher's character, Internet billionaire Walden Schmidt.
Greer previously guest-starred in Season 4 of 'Two and a Half Men' back in 2007. She played Herb's sister Myra, who memorably hooked up with Charlie Harper when Herb married Alan's ex-wife Judith.
She and Kutcher worked together on 2008's 'Miss Guided,' which was executive produced by his Katalyst Films production company, and he also guest-starred on an episode.

And now we know the source of Walden Schmidt's heartache.
Judy Greer will join "Two and a Half Men" as Bridget, Walden Schmidt's (Ashton Kutcher) future ex-wife according to TV Guide. Kutcher has previously stated that it's this break up with Bridget that sends his character into a nearly suicidal state and leads him to end up with Alan and Jake.
Greer is no stranger to the "Two and a Half Men" set. In 2007 she played one of Charlie's many love interests, Myra.
This is not the first time Greer and Kutcher have teamed up either. Kutcher served as executive producer of the short-lived TV comedy "Miss Guided" in which Greer played the main character, guidance counselor Becky Freeley.

Ok, so if not Hugh Grant, how about Ashton Kutcher?
Kutcher is the latest star to come up as a possible Charlie Sheen replacement on "Two and a Half Men." Broadcasting & Cable reports that he's "under consideration" to join the CBS sitcom for its ninth season.
On Wednesday it was reported that Grant came very close to signing a deal to replace Sheen before backing out. Kutcher is a markedly different actor than Grant, but they both presumably have enough star power to bring viewers back to the show next season (at least initially).
Finding someone to replace Sheen is a big-money issue for both CBS, which wants to keep its highest-rated comedy going, and producer Warner Bros., which stands to make (or lose) piles of money in syndication if the show continues on strong footing. The way the show's syndication deal is structured gives stations the right not to...

Chicago – After years of suffering through abysmal failures (“Rules of Engagement,” “Worst Week,” “Gary Unmarried”) and mediocre offerings (“Mike & Molly,” “The New Adventures of Old Christine”), it seems like CBS may have finally found a new relationship comedy worth a look on Monday nights in the very-promising “Mad Love,” debuting, of course, on Valentine’s Eve, Feb. 14, 2011.
TV Rating: 3.5/5.0
Critics often criticize programs for being too derivative of better comedies, but there’s also a bit of comfort factor when the comparison is meant positively. Just as the successful parts of NBC’s Thursday night lineup tap a similar comedic vein (the senses of humor of Joel McHale, Steve Carell, and Tina Fey are not that dissimilar), it’s nice when an evening of programming provides just enough variety to avoid getting stale while also not representing a rollercoaster in quality.

Blossom aka Mayim Bialik will guest star to play a possible love interest for Sheldon. The pair will be matched up via an eHarmony-eque site which could get really interesting as her character is described as a “female version of Jim Parson’s theoretical physicist”.
Word is that Bialik’s contract with “Big Bang” allows the show the option of bringing her back next season as well. What would a romance of this sort be like? Will the polarity of their characters cause human attraction? Check out this first look at the season finale with Sheldon and said love interest played by Mayim Bialik.
Leading up to the season finale, Sheldon will also spend the night with a girl! Who woulda thought? Sheldon isn’t asexual after all!

"Miss Guided" creator Caroline Williams has inked a sizable two-script deal with Warner Bros. Television.
Under the mid-six-figure pact, she will develop two comedy projects for the studio, including one with Wbtv-based J.J. Abrams.
After a string of drama efforts with "Felicity," "Alias," "Lost," "Fringe" and the NBC pilot "Undercovers," Abrams and his company Bad Robot have been looking to enter the half-hour arena. This development season, they fielded a medical comedy project at Fox.
Abrams has some experience in comedy; in 2007, he directed an episode of NBC's "The Office."
It was during the filming of that episode that Williams, then a writer on the Emmy-winning NBC comedy, met Abrams.
The two talked a few more times, and then in December, Abrams approached Williams about working together on a single-camera comedy pilot with a female protagonist.
"I hung up the phone and danced around my office," Williams said. "He's an incredible storyteller,...

Fox is doing just fine in the drama department. "Bones" and "Fringe" (as well as technically-a-comedy-but-filling-a-drama-timeslot "Glee") have all been picked up for next season, and barring some monumentally weird turn of events, "House" is all but certain to return as well.
Half-hour comedy, however, is a different story. The Sunday animation block still does fine, but the network's recent stabs at live-action laughs have fallen flat. "Sons of Tucson" has performed meagerly out of the gate, and both "Brothers" and "'Til Death" -- which has officially been given the ax -- are gone and soon to be forgotten.
So while Fox only has a handful of dramas in development for next season, it's loading up on comedy pilots this year. Here are a few (from both genres) that have caught our eye.
"Tax Man"
The IRS and comedy don't naturally go together, but we like the cast and creative team behind this show.

You don't have to be a genius to be psyched about this bit of casting news: Sources confirm to me exclusively that Judy Greer — perhaps the most endearing actress whose name you don't know — has been tapped to appear in a May sweeps episode of The Big Bang Theory. Oh, and did I mention that her character spends the night with Sheldon? 'Cause she does! The big-screen second banana (in everything from The Wedding Planner to 27 Dresses) and recent Modern Family guest will play a famous physicist. (Wait, there are famous ones?) Adds executive producer Bill Prady: "Sheldon invites...

Former "West Wing" star Jimmy Smits is returning to NBC for a drama pilot about a different branch of government, and Keri Russell may be coming back to television, thanks to some of the "Arrested Development" crew.
The day's other pilot casting news includes additions to The CW's "Nikita," Judy Greer joining Fox's "Tax Man," Jerry O'Connell doing his second pilot this season and Jason Biggs seeking "True Love" at CBS.
Smits will star in an untitled legal drama from writer John Eisendrath ("Alias," "My Own Worst Enemy") as a Supreme Court justice who makes the unusual move of leaving the bench to return to private practice, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The multiple Emmy nominee (and one-time winner, for "L.A. Law") last starred in the third season of "Dexter"; his TV credits also include "NYPD Blue" and "Cane."
Russell hasn't done regular TV series work since "Felicity" ended in 2002, but that could change soon.

Is The CW's new drama "Life Unexpected" the show that puts Kristoffer Polaha in America's living rooms for the long haul? The "North Shore" and "Miss Guided" and "Valentine" star has kept busy with guest starring roles on shows as diverse as "Dollhouse," "Better Off Ted" and "Mad Men" and with "Life Unexpected," he has what is probably his best and most interesting character. Polaha plays Nate "Baze" Bazile, a young man who peaked in high school and now drinks his life away as the owner of a grungy bar. Stuck in a perpetual state of adolescence, Baze gets a shock...

Modern Family's outstanding guest star line-up just added a new name.
We've already been treated to Fred Willard as Phil's father; and Chazz Palminteri appears on next week's episode.
Now, we can confirm that Judy Greer is joining the funniest family on TV for on episode.
The actress has previously guest-starred on House and Arrested Development and even anchored ABC's short-lived 2008 sitcom Miss Guided.
Greer will portray Denise, an ex-girlfriend of family man Phil that reconnects with him on (what else?) Facebook. Despite Claire's initial hesitation, she's invited over for dinner to meet the Dunphys.
We can only imagine - with a huge smile on our faces - how awkward Phil will make this meal.

Judy Greer blew me away during the incredibly short run of her 2008 ABC series Miss/Guided. She brought the perfect blend of earnest geekiness, slapstick and petty jealousy to the role of former nerd turned high school guidance counselor. The show was way better than the treatment it got from ABC, which aired all seven episodes in four weeks, but that was so long ago.
In 2008, ABC didn't care about comedy. But now, ABC has this Wednesday night lineup that is doing great (except for Hank). All the shows are critical darlings (except for Hank), and they've already been renewed for the full season (except for Hank). So now's the perfect time to bring Greer back into the fold.
The new ABC project for Judy Greer is I'm With Stupid. The premise is that Greer has a fling with a "perfect" park ranger while on safari, only to have him...

ABC is developing "I'm With Stupid," a multicamera comedy series starring Judy Greer and executive produced by feature scribe Allan Loeb.
Based on Elaine Szewczyk's novel, "Stupid" centers on Manhattan-born and -bred Kas Sienkiewicz (Greer), who has a fling with a seemingly perfect park ranger while on safari in South Africa. When she returns home, she wonders whether she'll ever hear from him again, only to have him arrive unannounced at her doorstep. She quickly realizes her new roommate has limited intellectual capabilities and learns that what happens on safari should stay on safari.
Szewczyk is writing the TV adaptation and co-executive producing. ABC Studios is producing the project, originally developed at Lionsgate TV. Loeb, Steven Pearl and Richard Lewis are exec producing "Stupid," which has a script commitment.
"Stupid" marks Greer's return to ABC, where she toplined the single-camera comedy "Miss Guided."

Actors weathered a number of storms in 2008, several of which won't pass anytime soon. The biggest is the financial crisis that has made it more difficult to get credit, which every sector of the entertainment industry relies on, particularly movies and theatre. Beyond that, there was ongoing friction within organized labor, injuries on stage, and a reduction of scripted content on television.Depressing RecessionThe entertainment industry turned out not to be recession-proof soon after Lehman Brothers filed for bankruptcy Sept. 15 — the largest filing in U.S. history — and helped usher in the biggest economic crisis since the Depression. Share prices of major media companies such as Time Warner, Sony, and Disney tumbled, and subsequent months brought massive layoffs at NBC Universal and Viacom, among others. Economic conditions and the possibility of a Screen Actors Guild strike in early 2009 also caused studios to put several productions on hold.Broadway was particularly hard hit.

Fox has lined up actress Brooke Burns and TV personality Mark Thompson to host its Japanese-inspired game show "Hole in the Wall."
Burns previously hosted the game show "Dog Eat Dog" and has acting credits that include roles in the comedy "Miss Guided" and "North Shore." Thompson is a weather anchor for Fox's Los Angeles affiliate Kttv-tv, and provides voiceover for such Fox series as "Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader?"
"Hole in the Wall," from American Idol producers FremantleMedia North America, starts production this week in Los Angeles. The show was often described as "human Tetris" after videos of the hit Japanese version became popular on YouTube. Contestants work as teams to try to fit through oncoming cut-out shapes or else they're pushed off a platform. Fremantle is producing versions of the show in several countries.

The alphabet network has dropped two of its unsuccessful midseason replacement series, Miss Guided and Cashmere Mafia. Based on their ratings, neither comes as much of a surprise.
Miss Guided centers around Becky Freeley (Judy Greer) as she starts working as a guidance counselor at her old high school. The single-camera sitcom debuted in March and ran for seven episodes. The premiere attracted less than 10 million viewers and dropped week after week. The final episode attracted just 4.3 million, ranking fourth in its timeslot. Though the series seemed an obvious choice for cancellation, the sitcom was reportedly being considered for renewal up until earlier today.
Mafia comes from Darren Starr's production company and was compared with Sex in the City, though usually not kindly. The series focuses on four successful women who support each other in their business careers and personal lives. Critical reaction to the show wasn't enthusiastic. The premiere...
