During the Iraq War, a Sergeant recently assigned to an army bomb squad is put at odds with his squad mates due to his maverick way of handling his work.
Kathryn Bigelow became the first woman to win the Academy Award, the BAFTA, and the DGA for Best Director, with this film. This is also the first film to win Best Picture that was directed by a woman.
Sergeant JT Sanborn:

Sgt. Matt Thompson: I can't.
Sergeant JT Sanborn: What do you mean you can't? Pretend it's your dick, man.
Sgt. Matt Thompson: How about I pretend it's your dick?

The flags worn on the right sleeves of the soldiers are not correct. The flags have the canton (field with the stars) on the upper left, as is the 'usual' custom, yet Army regulations stipulate that flags worn on the right shoulder should have the canton on the upper right, as if the flag is affixed to a staff at the front of the soldier and the flag is blowing in the wind as the soldier moves forward.
There are no opening credits, not even a title.
