Weak, undernourished episode
Even though it clocks in at a full 30 minutes (about 20% longer than a typical segment), "Heart's Desire" is low on content. Fans of the popular cable series will have to look elsewhere for stimulation.
I blame director Gary Orona, a pretentious pornographer (see SANATORIUM as prime example of his excesses) who didn't give it the old college try. Sharing the guilt is writer Dwight Brown, a colleague of mine (we were both members of the NY Film Critics Circle in the '80s and '90s) who definitely had an off-day.
Dull storyline concerns a Latina singing star Desire (Ananda St. James, trying a lousy Rosie Perez imitation before settling into the role in later reels) who's stranded at Lauren Hays' title hotel without her entourage for the weekend. She's so dependent upon them that when the restaurant won't let her put lunch on her room tab she can't figure out how to pay for it.
Not to worry, her next door neighbor Rob (Daryl Cleveland, with soul patch and tattoos, ridiculously miscast as a Wall St. whiz) at the resort happens to be dining at the next table and picks up the check for her. She reciprocates teasingly by asking him to let her use his shower, as her's is on the blink. When he doesn't make a play for her (pretty hard to believe given we're watching cable porn), she's angry as all get out.
Corny resolution comes when kindly masseuse Sandy (Ander Page) turns matchmaker and makes sure the two guests end up together at the hotel's Blue Spa, with Rob acting as her masseur -cue the "true love" ending.
This boring scenario is equaled by weak casting and not enough sex. Cleveland, not surprisingly a 1-shot actor per IMDb, is involved in both of the humping scenes and is a drag throughout, while leading lady St. James has her best moments in the shower. Unfortunately for late-night fans, her shower and a very innocent massage applied by Page (no lesbian overtones whatsoever) constitute other sexual content by default. The other girl humped is blonde Emily Webster, bored with it all and delivering her lines as if under protest.
Scripter Brown puts in his two cents with several clunky movie celeb references, pointlessly namedropping Jennifer Lopez, Nicole Kidman, Benjamin Bratt and Julia Roberts along the way. As I always like to say in cliché-speak, Dwight: don't quit your day job.
Oddest touch is that Page is credited below an actress Sacha Peralta whose role is merely "Waitress". Page is a hardcore porn star, yet Orona has her prim & proper throughout the half-hour junker -not very bright move on his part.
