Guitars and other instruments line the walls of the living room in the Nashville home that singer Kathy Mattea shares with husband-songwriter Jon Venzer. Alongside them are color-splashed works of art, many created by the couple’s close friends. On the fireplace mantel rests an oversized painting by Nashville artist Deborah Denson, a dramatic image that serves as the cover of Mattea’s new album Pretty Bird, released in September.

On September 7th, Cma Award-winning vocalist Kathy Mattea will release Pretty Bird, her first new album in six years. A sublime acoustic collection including a number of smartly chosen and heartfelt covers, the record marks something of a new era in Mattea’s 30-plus-year career. Over the past several years her deep, rich singing voice has experienced significant changes that could have put a permanent end to her performing, but after extensive vocal training she has emerged from what she refers to as her “dark night of the soul” with a duskier instrument.

Now that “Swiss Army Man” has considerably raised the collective cachet of Daniel Kwan & Daniel Scheinert (known together as Daniels), one of their earlier works is being brought to greater attention. “Possibilia” first premiered at Tribeca in 2014 before being spotlighted as part of Sundance’s New Frontiers the next year, and now the “interactive love story set in the multiverse” is set to be released online. Watch its trailer below.

The story of a hero battling evil has hit the screen time and time again and with varying degrees of success. With animated films, the villain isn't always so pronounced (Bambi - forest fire or hunter, you decide), but when they are, you can usually get a pretty solid song out of them. And isn't that all anyone ever wanted out of their villain? A song?
Today, Rio, the story of macaws Blu and Jewel in their quest to get home (wherever that may be), hits DVD. As if fully aware of the value added by a singing villain, Rio sees Jemaine Clement of Flight of the Conchords* cast as Nigel, a psychotic cockatoo and former television actor who hates exotic birds, after being replaced by a parakeet. The Rio soundtrack. It might not have seemed like it at the time, but Sacha Baron Cohen’s actually-quite-funny turn as a megalomaniacal ring-tailed lemur in Madagascar set a new paradigm. I refer not to the tactic of casting talented comedians in supporting roles in family-friendly anthropomorphic animations and letting them run wild, although this practice has become more common since then. I refer to the short sequence in the middle of that film (and the brain-poundingly long closing credits) when Sacha Baron Cohen’s king lemur repeatedly sings the I Like To Move It Move It chorus from Soul II Soul’s early 90s dancefloor classic. Those of you who do not have small children may have heard from those gape-eyed sleep-deprived friends of yours how the maniacal infant overlords of their newly toy-strewn homes took to this like repetitive quacking ducks to particularly annoying water. Strangely Soul II Soul...

We were right about Barney’s Version coming out only as a Blu-ray/DVD combo pack. Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has confirmed the details and set the release date for June 28.
Looks like Sony is trying out the Blu-ray/DVD combo-only release strategy with its smaller but acclaimed films. The studio is issuing Another Year only on Blu-ray/DVD on June 7. Lionsgate tried out the strategy with Buried back in January.
R-rated comedy drama Barney’s Version, which was nominated for an Oscar for best makeup, won a Golden Globe award for Paul Giamatti’s perfomance. Giamatti (Pretty Bird) plays a 65-year-old, politically incorrect, foulmouthed hockey fanatic and television producer who meets the love of his life at his wedding — and she’s not the bride. Throughout the film, Giamatti’s Barney reflects on his life and wives, including Minnie Driver (Conviction), Rosamund Pike (An Education) and Rachelle Lefevre (Twilight Saga: New Moon...

Rio
Directed by: Carlos Saldanha
Cast: Jesse Eisenberg, Anne Hathaway, Jemaine Clement, George Lopez
Running Time: 1 hr 36 mins
Rating: PG
Release Date: April 15, 2011
Plot: Blue Macaw, Blu (Eisenberg) lives a quiet life with his owner in Minnesota. Until a Brazilian scientist brings them to Rio in an effort to save Blu’s species, it seems he and Jewel (Hathaway) are the last of their kind. Then things really come unglued when Blu and Jewel are birdnapped by an smuggler and his nefarious cockatoo, Nigel (Clement).
Who’S It For? The film is going for a general audience of adults and children.
Expectations: I thought the trailers looked cute, but I’ve been kind of hit or miss with Blue Sky Studios. The first few Ice Age films were great, but I haven’t really enjoyed anything else.

We've been begging and pleading with our girlfriends to let us go to Rio de Janeiro, but something about the bounty of thongs and beaches has always thwarted our travel attempts. C'est la vie.
In lieu of a spontaneous vacation, though, the best we could get is the soundtrack to Blue Sky's "Rio," the upcoming animated film about a rare macaw (voiced by Jesse Eisenberg) who travels to South America to find his female counterpart and revitalize his dying species. Man, even the birds think about sex down there.
As you'd expect, the soundtrack leans heavy on the Brazilian theme, melding updated versions of classic songs with new tracks by R&B and pop superstars. Jamie Foxx and will.i.am's "Hot Wings (I Wanna Party)" should – intentionally or not – please any 8-year-old, with Foxx singing "I wanna fly just like a bird" before being reminded, "But you are a bird.

Hollywoodnews.com: How is it possible the upcoming “Rio” soundtrack doesn’t feature Duran Duran singing their smash hit?
Well, there’s still plenty of talent on deck for the “Rio” record, which will arrive in stores April 5 on Fox Music/Interscope Records. Will.i.am of The Black Eyed Peas, Jamie Foxx, Bebel Gilberto, Taio Cruz, Ester Dean, Siedah Garrett, Jemaine Clement (of Flight of the Conchords), and Brazilian sensation Carlinhos Brown collaborate with film composer John Powell to juice up the song track for the anticipated animated hit.
From the release:
From the makers of the hit Ice Age series comes Rio, a comedy adventure about taking a walk on the wild side. Blu (Jesse Eisenberg) is a domesticated Macaw who never learned to fly, living a comfortable life with his owner and best friend Linda (Leslie Mann) in the small town of Moose Lake, Minnesota.

Pretty Bird is a hard film to get a handle on, and it’s hard to say exactly why. At it’s base, the story is sound (and it’s clear that, despite its ‘inspired by actual events’ tag, it was more than willing to make the necessary adjustments to make itself entertaining), and its leads are well-cast (particularly Paul Giamatti). But in some nebulous film ozone, some open space between story and character, the film has failed to engage the mysterious x factor that creative people like to think that they understand, but is really the professional equivalent of the golden goose that could start laying rotten eggs at any moment. It doesn't work, but there's no single facet that can be pointed to on which to blame its failure, which is a slightly longer way of saying that you're never sure why you're not entertained.

The Farrelly brother's Three Stooges project has seemed doomed from the start. Originally getting Jim Carrey, Sean Penn and Benicio Del Toro to play the roles of Larry, Moe and Curly, the casting process has seen more dropouts than an inner-city high school. One spot of good luck the production seemed to have temporarily was after Sean Penn announced he was taking a hiatus from acting, it was announced that Paul Giamatti had taken his place in the role of Larry. While the news had come directly from the mouth of co-director Peter Farrelly, it was apparently all bull. MTV recently caught up with Giamatti, who is currently promoting the DVD for his film Pretty Bird, and asked him about the rumor. Turns out that it all started as a joke: "My involvement in that was some completely flukey thing...I was never supposed to be doing that movie." "Somebody...

A couple of years ago, I saw a film at Sundance that I really enjoyed: "Pretty Bird." The movie stars Paul Giamatti, Billy Crudup and David Hornsby as a trio of mismatched business partners who set out together to build and market a rocket belt. Hornsby is the group's moneyman, a successful mattress store owner who uses his earning to invest in the project. Crudup is the one with the ideas; or, more specifically, the guy with the stolen set of incomplete plans. And Giamatti, he's the brains, an engineer rocket scientist with a nasty temperament and a not-unwarranted distrust when it comes to dealing with business-folk.
Together, the three men slowly come to realize their dream of creating this rocket belt... only to have everything fall apart when lies and mistrust paved the way for a much darker turn to occur. It's all actually based on a true story,...

Wow! There's not too much coming out on DVD this week but I grabbed a few to highlight for you all. There may only be a few but they are good ones in my opinion.
Hot Tub Time Machine
Fueled by energy drinks, vodka and nostalgia for their younger, wilder days, a group of aging best friends travels back in time to 1987, where they get the chance to relive the best year of their lives. And their time machine? Well, it's a hot tub. John Cusack, Rob Corddry, Craig Robinson, Clark Duke, Crispin Glover and Sebastian Stan co-star in this out-of-the-box comedy that takes time travel to a whole new level.
Starring: John Cusack, Craig Robinson
Director: Steve Pink
This movie is awesome! To be fair I think the older you are the more awesome it becomes. There's so many great flashbacks to the 80's and the soundtrack is amazing!

I saw "Pretty Bird" a couple of years ago at Sundance Film Festival. Funny movie. Billy Crudup stars as a flim-flam man with some big ideas. Really, one big idea: he wants to build a rocket belt. So he hires Paul Giamatti, who plays a brilliant engineer, to help him on the technical side. Hilarity and a little bit of calamity ensues. Even better, it's all based on a true story!
In the clip below, Giamatti is pretty pissed off. He's discovered some truths about his business partner, and he's done negotiating. It's time for action. Unfortunately for his poor wife, he doesn't really know how to handle a gun. Remember that calamity I mentioned? Here's some of it ensuing.

There are 5 clips up from Paramount Home Entertainment's "Pretty Bird" starring Billy Crudup, Paul Giamatti, Kristen Wiig, David Hornsby and Anna Camp. The film was directed by actor/filmmaker Paul Schneider (“Parks and Recreation”, Lars and the Real Girl) and was adapted from the book The Rocketball Caper: A True Tale of Invention, Obsession and Murder by Paul Brown. You probably know Paul Schneider from such films as Lars and the Real Girl and The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford in addition to his role as Mark Brendanawicz on Parks and Recreation, but did you know that he is also a director? I had been looking forward to Schneider's directorial debut Pretty Bird for a year or two now, but after it premiered at Sundance in 2008, it was never heard from again. Usually that is not a good sign, and yet, the movie stars Billy Crudup, Paul Giamatti and Kristen Wiig, so it can't be all bad, can it? We'll finally get the chance to judge for ourselves later this month when Paramount releases it direct-to-dvd. Based on the book The Rocketbelt Caper: A True Tale of Invention, Obsession and Murder by Paul Brown, Pretty Bird is about a clever entrepreneur who recruits his friends...

Unfortunately, with the state of the economy and the reliance of Hollywood on big budget blockbuster features, smaller independent flicks often get left behind. Last year it happened to a relatively well received Sundance film, The Vicious Kind which had the star power of Brittany Snow, Adam Scott, and Jk Simmons. Despite those names, the movie went straight to DVD. This year, we’ve got another.

Check out the trailer for Paramount Home Entertainment's "Pretty Bird." The comedy sees DVD release on June 29th and stars Billy Crudup, Paul Giamatti, Kristen Wiig, David Hornsby and Anna Camp. Actor Paul Schneider makes his directorial debut on the film, writing alongside Zene Baker. The film premiered at the 2008 Sundance Film Festival and was hominated for the Grand Jury Prize (dramatic). Was adapted from the book The Rocketball Caper: A True Tale of Invention, Obsession and Murder by Paul Brown. At once a humorous look at the folly of human ambition and a parable about the dark side of the American Dream. Featuring an outstanding ensemble cast including Billy Crudup (Public Enemies), Paul Giamatti (Sideways), Kristen Wiig (Knocked Up), David Hornsby (“It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia”) and Anna Camp (“True Blood”), Pretty Bird is based on the outrageous true story of three would-be entrepreneurs who set out...

At Sundance a few years ago I caught a film called Pretty Bird, directed by actor Paul Schneider, that was about a group of misfit scientists and businessmen who decide to build a working rocket-powered belt, like the one seen in James Bond (or Kick-Ass). It was a comedy starring Paul Giamatti, Billy Crudup, and Kristen Wiig, and was actually pretty damn good, despite the otherwise scathing reviews it got during the fest. I never heard a single thing about it again for nearly two years, but a trailer has finally appeared online. Sadly, it's only going straight-to-dvd, but now you can finally get a glimpse of what Pretty Bird is all about. Watch the official DVD trailer for Paul Schneider's Pretty Bird: A sweet-natured guy (Billy Crudup) enlists his pals to help him create and market his idea for a rocket-powered belt. When they unexpectedly find success,...

"So...Andrei Tarkovsky!" Paul Schneider said when I sat down to talk with him. I wasn't really prepared to discuss the merits of the Russian auteur, but then neither was he -- it was the just the kind of disarming introduction you'd expect from Schneider, who's made a career of playing guys you'd want to have a beer with in films like "All the Real Girls" and "Elizabethtown." Schneider can currently be seen working his low-key charms on the Amy Poehler sitcom "Parks and Recreation," and serving as a much-needed leavening agent in Jane Campion's period romance "Bright Star."
In the film, Schneider plays once again, the best friend -- Charles Armitage Brown, the colleague and confidant of poet John Keats (Ben Whishaw) and unlikely rival to seamstress Fanny Brawne (Abbie Cornish) for Keats' attention. While Whishaw and Cornish tug at the heart, Schneider's turn as the sharp-tongued Scot...

Paul Schneider is one of those actors who regularly spins gold from what could be utterly thankless roles. While he's currently appearing on NBC's Amy Poehler comedy Parks and Recreation, he's carved out a lovely niche on screen as a supporting actor in films like The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford (where he plays a character that's particularly...randy, providing laughs amongst all the levity), Lars and the Real Girl (where he's Ryan Gosling's brother), and this year's Away We Go. He first drew notice with a starring role and co-writer credit for the romantic indie All the Real Girls (2003), directed by his fellow North Carolina School for the Arts alum David Gordon Green. Over the years, Schneider has continued to develop as an actor and writer, and he made his directing debut with the 2008 Sundance flick Pretty Bird, which he also wrote. ...

Jenny Lewis' last two releases—her solo debut, Rabbit Fur Coat, and Rilo Kiley's Under The Blacklight—have earned her the most attention of her career, and also the most scrutiny from longtime Rilo Kiley fans wary of the new directions the band's frontwoman has been exploring. Unfortunately for those still hoping for an old-school Rilo Kiley redux, Lewis' new Acid Tongue is the sonic midpoint of those two releases, matching Blacklight's freewheeling, schizophrenic vibe with Fur Coat's alt-country foundations. For those ready to move with Lewis down those paths, however, the new one is a confident amalgam of tracks that sparkle, stew, and storm. The element binding sparse, prettily forlorn tracks ("Bad Man's World," "Pretty Bird") with rollicking, gospel-tinged larks like "Jack Killed Mom" is the live-tracked, all-analog recording, which gives the album the warm, communal appeal of a no-pressure, see-what-sticks jam session. And Lewis invites plenty.

- With Sundance cometh and goith, there remains a ton of high profile titles that have yet to be picked up (The Great Buck Howard, Sunshine Cleaning, Pretty Bird, Phoebe in Wonderland and What Just Happened?), but with today's buy, I expect that many of these titles will slowly be picked up as prices go down, few parties are intrested and producers fight hard to get them to sign on the line that is dotted. Today, Variety reports that IFC Films have picked up the comedy Diminished Capacity. Based on his novel of the same name, Broderick plays a man who suffers memory loss after getting hit on the head. He then takes a trip with his Alzheimer's-addled uncle (Alda) and his high school sweetheart (Madsen) to a memorabilia show as the group concocts a scheme to sell a rare baseball card. This sounds like a goofy recipe and perhaps

- High profile indie pics and your usual list of complete unknown titles are the make up of this year's Dramatic comp. Among the more anticipated selections we find Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck's sophomore feature to their Sundance profiled Half Nelson. Their new film Sugar is star-less tale that looks at the broken dreams of a Dominican baseball prospect plucked from his native country to play in the U.S. minor-league system. Story is a fictional tale based on Miguel "Sugar" Santos, a teenager who ends up far from home playing for a team in the Midwest after showing baseball aptitude in his native country. Groundswell Productions' The Mysteries of Pittsburgh (see pic above) and Big Beach Film's Sunshine Cleaning are the two premiere titles of the section that will have buyers in a frenzy. Christine Jeffs directs Amy Adams and Emily Blunt in Sunshine Cleaning, while Rawson Thurber
