• Mr. Coombs : [reading from Marcel Proust's "In Search of Lost Time"]  We believe we can change things in accordance with our desires. We believe it because otherwise we'd see no favorable outcome. We don't think of the outcome which generally comes to pass that we do not succeed in changing things in accordance with our desires, but gradually our desires change. The situation we hoped to change becomes unimportant to us. We've failed to surmount to the obstacle but life took us around it, led us beyond it, and if we turn to gaze into the past, we can barely see it, so imperceptible has it become.
