Exclusive: There was more buzz than usual around the Edinburgh Fringe this year as the Baby Reindeer effect took hold and Netflix may have just landed on the next play-to-tv hit.
In a competitive situation, Deadline is told that the streamer has secured the rights to Weather Girl, an apocalyptic one-woman play about a Californian weather girl in meltdown that staged sold out shows throughout August to rave reviews. We understand there were several U.S. buyers interested in Weather Girl and Netflix has just won out.
The play’s writer Brian Watkins (Outer Range) and star Julia McDermott (Women of the Movement) are both attached to the TV version, we are told. The project is in early stage development and may not make it to greenlight.
Intriguingly, Deadline understands A24 was also in town for Edinburgh and is interested in staging a U.S. version of the play at...

In Fear Street: Prom Queen, “Welcome back to Shadyside. In this next installment of the blood-soaked Fear Street franchise, prom season at Shadyside High is underway, and the school’s wolfpack of It Girls is busy with its usual sweet and vicious campaigns for the crown. Gotham is expanding in “The Penguin” and that means a lot of familiar names, but new faces. In some cases, it means new names too.
Premiering on HBO on Thursday, September 19, “The Penguin” takes place just a few weeks after the events of “The Batman,” but centers on crime boss Oz Cobb — better known as the Penguin. With Gotham effectively in ruins, it’s a race to see who can control the streets, and he thinks his time has come.
That becomes a bit harder, though, when Sofia Falcone, daughter of Carmine Falcone, unexpectedly returns from Arkham Asylum.
We won’t spoil anything, but here are the major players you’ll need to keep up with.

Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power season 2 has finally arrived, and we couldn't be more excited! The intricate fantasy series and franchise overall have built such an expansive world, and it's fun to see it all come to life in a new way with this prequel series.
The first three episodes are now streaming, and going forward one new installment will be released weekly. I'm sure we're in for a wild ride! I mean, this trio definitely got things moving right away. There's no argument that Rings of Power is one of the best shows streaming on Prime Video right now. And there's a bunch of others that join it. And, well, some that aren't worth your time.
There's the obvious shows that really are good, but you'll find on every list like this. Those include The Boys, Fallout, The Summer I Turned Pretty, The Wheel of Time,...

My Lady Jane, a British period drama, has been cancelled after just one season at Prime Video. More on the news below.
Another promising series has met its end. Prime Video has cancelled its new British fantasy drama after just one season, as detailed here by The Hollywood Reporter.
The series reimagined the life of Lady Jane Grey, portrayed by Emily Bader in the series. In My Lady Jane’s universe, humans coexist with shapeshifters, who have been driven outside of society by the humans. Jane sympathises with the so-called Ethians, but as she rises to power, she becomes a threat to the humans.
The first – and as of now, the only – season garnered strongly positive reviews from critics. My Lady Jane currently holds a 94% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes and a very respectable 81% audience score, but that wasn’t enough to warrant another season at Prime Video.

Lewis Pullman was about halfway through shooting the second episode of the Apple TV+ limited series “Lessons in Chemistry” when he got some unexpected news: Showrunner Lee Eisenberg and the rest of the production team were so impressed with his performance as Calvin Evans, the brilliant, socially awkward chemist who falls in love with Brie Larson’s equally brilliant and socially awkward chemist Elizabeth Zott, that they decided to write more episodes for him.
Originally, Calvin’s story arc was supposed to end after tragedy strikes him down in Episode 2, but now, he’d be making intermittent return appearances and getting his own stand-alone episode explaining his character’s backstory.
“It was such an honor,” Pullman, 31, said during a recent Zoom interview. “It was such a good working experience. I didn’t come home feeling like I was dragging any sort of demons with me. It was a very warm...

Hey, did you know "Deadpool & Wolverine" has cameos? Of course you did, because this movie is so stuffed with guest appearances that it is, as /Film's Chris Evangelista put it, a disappointing cameo-fest. Whether you were actually disappointed by the sheer level of cameo-ism on display in the movie will depend on several factors, such as how much of a Marvel fan you are and how seriously you take the film. Viewed as a light-hearted piece of box office entertainment, the constant guest spots can actually make "Deadpool & Wolverine" a grand old time at the movies, especially if you're a fan of the erstwhile 20th Century Fox Marvel films.
Part-way through the movie, it essentially becomes an homage to the now defunct universe established by Fox, which was subsumed by Disney back in 2019. That means we got cameos from an impressive array of Fox Marvel stars, including Jennifer Garner's Elektra,...

Though no other show can match the brilliance of Yellowstone's writing and loyal fanbase, there have been many attempts to recreate it on other platforms after the triumph of Taylor Sheridan's neo-western story. However, it seems that none of them have been quite as successful.
Prime Video's drama Outer Range, which aired for two seasons beginning in 2022, must have been one of the most intriguing stories in the genre. And yet again, even with the mysterious elements of sci-fi balanced out, the show didn't live to see another season.

We won’t be returning to the Abbott ranch anytime soon. Prime Video has cancelled Outer Range, its ambitious sci-fi western series, after two seasons. Season two was released in May.
The series followed Josh Brolin’s Royal Abbott and his family, who discovered a strange void at the edge of their property which had the power to send them through time. The Abbotts were also on a warpath with the neighbouring Tillerson family who were trying to take over Royal’s land.
The series’ large cast also included Imogen Poots, Lewis Pullman, Tom Pelphrey and Tamara Podemski. Brolin also made his directorial debut as he took the reins of the penultimate episode of season two, titled ‘Do-Si-Do’.

Amazon Studios has officially canceled “Outer Range,” the mind-bending sci-fi Western starring Josh Brolin, after just two seasons. The series, which blended elements of paranormal mystery with rugged rural drama, will not return for a third season on Prime Video, as confirmed by an individual close to the decision.
Created by Brian Watkins and executive produced by a team including Brad Pitt, the show followed Royal Abbott (Brolin), a Wyoming rancher fighting for his land and family after discovering a mysterious dark void on his property. The second season, which premiered on May 16, delved deeper into the Abbott family’s struggles following the disappearance of their granddaughter, raising the stakes and intensifying the enigma surrounding them.
Despite boasting a star-studded cast including Imogen Poots, Lili Taylor, and Will Patton, “Outer Range” struggled to capture widespread audience attention. While it did appear on Nielsen’s streaming charts for several weeks, it...

Outer Range, the sci-fi drama series our own Alex Maidy called the weirdest show you’re not watching, has been cancelled after two seasons. With so many TV shows out there, it’s always a shame when a good show slips through the cracks, which feels like what has happened with Outer Range.
The series stars Josh Brolin as Royal Abbott, a rancher fighting for his territory and family at the edge of Wyoming’s wilderness who must grapple with the unknown after discovering an unfathomable mystery on his land in the form of a dark void. The mystery deepens in the second season as Royal and his wife Cecelia struggle to keep their family together in the aftermath of their granddaughter’s sudden disappearance. The stakes have never been higher for the Abbotts, who now face threats on multiple fronts.

Is there anything worse than a show you love being canceled?
Just give a hearty "no" your best rebel yell. We all agree.
Today, Amazon has decided there will be no more Outer Range.
Outer Range is one of the last remaining unique shows on TV.

One by one, the shows that challenge expectations and entertain beyond lame drama are taking their leave, and we don't like it one bit.
Outer Range Season 1 was released episodically, which allowed fans to ponder the mystery, discuss theories, and enjoy the slow reveal of its many layers.
For Outer Range Season 2, Prime Video chose the drop-all-at-once route.
While that's great for binge-watchers, it does nothing for those who love chatting and theorizing about their favorite shows.
It also fails to keep viewers around for the longer term.

Prime Video has opted not to renew sci-fi/neo-western drama Outer Range, starring Josh Brolin, for a third season. The news comes almost two months after the seven-episode second season of the series from showrunner Charles Murray was released May 16.

The rule of Bridgerton — and Shonda Rhimes — on the streaming charts continued into the first two days of June.
Bridgerton declined about 37 percent in viewing time from a week earlier, but the Regency-era drama still ranked No. 1 overall on Nielsen’s charts for May 27-June 2 with 1.38 billion minutes of watch time on Netflix. The series has claimed the top spot for three straight weeks since its May 16 premiere, with another surge likely coming when results for the second half of the season (which debuted June 13) begin to arrive.
Rhimes’ Shondaland also had two other entries on the charts: Grey’s Anatomy came in third overall with 1.2 billion minutes on Hulu and Netflix. Bridgerton prequel Queen Charlotte also edged back into the top 10 original series list, scoring 274 million minutes of viewing.
Jennifer Lopez’s sci-fi film Atlas grew by 36 percent in its second week on the charts, taking fourth place overall and...

Season three of Bridgerton ruled the streaming charts for a second straight week, holding onto most of its premiere week audience and racking up more than 2 billion minutes of viewing.
A pair of sci-fi films, Jennifer Lopez’s Atlas and Dune: Part Two, also had pretty strong showings in the week of May 20-26, and Max’s Hacks and Hulu’s Under the Bridge entered the rankings as they neared the end of their seasons.
Bridgerton had 2.19 billion minutes of viewing for the week, down just 21 percent from 2.76 billion for the previous seven days. The period drama had almost double the viewing time of the second-place show, Grey’s Anatomy (1.1 billion) — which, like Bridgerton, comes from mega-producer Shonda Rhimes’ Shondaland. Kids’ favorite Bluey (1.07 billion minutes) crossed the billion-minute threshold for the 20th time in 21 measured weeks so far this year.

Ah, Emmy season. Does it ever end? The answer is a decisive “no” when it comes to 2024, considering we’ve already held one ceremony and are gamely preparing for a second. So many shows, so many artists, so many choices.
Fear not TV Academy voter. Yes, Emmy ballots are overwhelming. No, it’s not possible to lay discerning eyes on every candidate. But your trusty TV critic is here to help. At the cost of my friendships, physical health, and basic sanity, I’ve spent untold hours watching as much current television as humanly possible, from the highest achievements of imagination to the lowest embarrassments of our middling TV era. Now, I pass that experience onto you, via IndieWire’s 2024 Emmy Nominations Dream Ballot — a guide for voters (and reminder for casual viewers) as to what’s worth honoring among the thinning but still dense TV landscape.

The webs of romance in Bridgerton easily captured the top spot among all streaming titles for the show’s return. Theatrical flop Madame Web, meanwhile, found a promising start to its streaming life.
Bridgerton drew 2.76 billion minutes of viewing time in the United States for the week of May 13-19. The first half of season three premiered on May 16, and Nielsen says those four episodes accounted for 70 percent of the total, or about 1.93 billion minutes — which would still have ranked No. 1 by a wide margin. The remaining 827 million minutes came from the first two seasons.
Madame Web — whose mom was in the Amazon researching spiders right before she died — premiered May 14 on Netflix and racked up 1.16 billion minutes of viewing for the week. That’s equivalent to about 10 million complete showings of the movie, which is part of Sony’s Spider-Man universe and was derided by both critics and audiences...

Finally, Jason1 and Amanda were getting somewhere.
Sadly, that ended up being two separate locations on Dark Matter (2024) Season 1 Episode 7.
It was rewarding to watch how Amanda came to find herself a new home.
She finally heeded Blair2's advice on Dark Matter (2024) Season 1 Episode 5, which told her to find a world of her own.
FBI Season 7: Cast and Character Guide
Amanda burned bridges with her dimension when she helped Jason1 to escape from Velocity Lab.
So she needed to land someplace new.
That likely explained why she kept checking on her namesakes in every world on which they landed.
Amanda certainly deserved better from life than she had gotten.
Her Jason (Jason2) was more in love with his research than he was with her.
Then, when he decided he required domestic bliss, he found a Jason who had married a Daniela rather than starting a family with Amanda.

Storyline aside, the strangeness encapsulating Outer Range Season 2 (and the previous season) is mind-bending.
While some questions from the previous season are answered, even more are left on the table, along with a suggestion of trouble surrounding the timeline of events.
Outer Range dives headlong into the concept of time travel, a science fiction genre that often derails movies and shows that embrace it.
While time travel will always be an exciting and intriguing topic to the audience, it also means that a resolute ending point in the season finale is nothing more than a pipe dream.
The Status of the Mysterious Hole
The hinge point from which Outer Range's bizarrely shaped door swings is the gigantic, dark hole in the middle of the Abbott family's western pasture.
Though there are indications that the hole is not the catalyst for time travel, at least not by physically throwing someone in it,...

Oh, snap. Josh Brolin has joined the all-star cast of the new Knives Out mystery movie.
Rian Johnson is furiously casting up Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery, which, like the other installments, is being headlined by Daniel Craig
The Netflix feature is heading toward an early June production start in the U.K. and already has a sizeable list of suspects (and maybe a murder victim or two) in the form of Challengers’ Josh O’Connor, Civil War actress Cailee Spaeny, Ripley star Andrew Scott, Scandal alum Kerry Washington, screen and stage veteran Glenn Close, Hawkeye straight shooter Jeremy Renner, and Mila Kunis, who starred in thriller Luckiest Girl Alive for Netflix.
Plot details and character information are being kept in the bodybag, but the thriller is expected to follow the same deliciously elliptical path as Johnson’s previous Knives Out mysteries. Eccentric, Southern-fried detective Benoit Blanc (Craig...

The Regency era dominated TV screens during the week of May 17-23, as “Bridgerton” took not one, not two, but three top spots on Luminate’s weekly streaming ranking charts.
In its first full week of availability, Season 3 Part 1 of the Shonda Rhimes-produced Netflix series hit 2.3 billion minutes watched, the No. 1 title by far. Season 1 took second place with 498.6 million minutes watched, followed by Season 2 with 434 million minutes watched. It’s clear that “Bridgerton” will continue to dominate streaming rankings for weeks to come, not only because of the show’s obvious popularity, but because Season 3 still has four episodes yet to come on June 13.
Two titles tied as the next-most-watched of the week: Season 2 of Amazon Prime Video's "Outer Range," which was the No. 4 TV series, and Netflix's "Mother of the Bride," the top movie. Both were watched for 256.4 million minutes in their first full weeks of availability.
