Gen X are a funny lot. Generally acknowledged to be made up of folks born between 1965 and 1980. This means Gen Xers were teenagers between the ’80s and the late ’90s. Crucially this also means it’s a generation that grew up without any meaningful internet and no mobile phones, who were used to relying on cinema trips to watch trailers, Blockbuster Video for our weekend viewing and highlighting the TV guide at Christmas.
Streaming services, of course, did not exist so movies we watched at the cinema, recorded off the telly and even potentially owned on VHS (if you were the Queen) became very precious in a way that something you caught on Netflix while you were looking at your phone are not. Every generation has movies that are iconic to them – here’s to the ones that shaped today’s 40-somethings+.

It’s been an eventful summer for Disney, and not under ideal circumstances. After his wife’s death because of food allergies at a Disney park, a man struggled to pursue legal action against the company due to his Disney+ subscription. Then, “X-Men: 97” showrunner Beau DeMayo shared a series of posts elaborating on his termination, and his attorneys told IndieWire that he’s preparing to sue.
The headlines have people considering whether to keep subscribing this month — but if you’re a parent, there’s no real replacement. The kids can tune in to “Lego Pixar: Bricktoons,” “Chibi Tiny Tales,” “Disney Jr.’s Ariel,” and more, as well as new episodes of the K-pop series “Are You Sure?” There’s also a big Marvel premiere, but more on that below. Hulu gets a ton of new movies including the “Die Hard” franchise, “Freaky Friday” (which has a sequel in the...

George Clooney is lamenting conglomerates taking over Hollywood. The actor told GQ UK that studio Paramount, which has long been on the market, is akin to a “mom-and-pop shop” nowadays.
“Paramount’s one of the great original studios,” Clooney said when asked about how Hollywood has changed. “But some of it you just have no say in. Because the business, it’s all getting eaten up. It’s like everything — it’s all getting eaten up by big Walmarts and Amazons around the world. Our version of mom-and-pop shops in a small town is Paramount.”
Of course, Amazon bought out MGM Studios (and has its own Amazon Studios) and also has streamer Prime Video. Walmart, meanwhile, has not quite gotten into the filmmaking realm yet, aside from a pitch-perfect faux “Mean Girls” sequel featuring most of the 2004 cast in a commercial. (Walmart’s free-shipping subscriber program Walmart+ does include access to Paramount+.

Friends actor and everyone’s favorite, Chandler Bing, aka Matthew Perry, was someone who faced a lot of ups and downs in his life. Even after achieving much fame during the 90s, he dealt with his own demons of addiction and health issues. Before his passing, the actor had written his memoir, mentioning unknown details of his life.
In his 2022 book, Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing, he divulged quite a lot of secrets and personal moments. One such experience was related to his relationship with an ex-girlfriend, his almost-engagement, and his biggest heartbreak. This was his ‘Chandler Bing’ moment, as in, he managed to fumble and ruin a good thing because of panic and insecurities.
A relationship marked by turmoil: Lizzy Caplan
Before his failed engagement to Molly Hurwitz, Matthew Perry had almost proposed to another woman way back around 2012. The Friends alum met Lizzy Caplan in 2006, and...

In 2002, author Rosalind Wiseman published a self-help book entitled “Queen Bees and Wannabes,” aimed at helping parents of high school-aged girls deal with the vicious effects of bullying on their daughters. Wiseman could not have possibly predicted what came next: that Tina Fey would a) read the book, b) see some of her own high school experience reflected back to her, and c) call up Lorne Michaels and suggest the non-fiction book would make a banger of a high school comedy. Some people have all the luck, don’t they?
What Fey saw in Wiseman’s relatively dry book was timeless — there have always been instances of “girl on girl crime,” and they sure as hell weren’t stopping — but when the comedic icon turned Wiseman’s work into the enduring early aughts offering “Mean Girls,...

In a hazy, smoke-filled theater, dozens of red strings dangle from the ceiling. They’re connected to the backs and hands of reporters, all slumped over in their seats, notebooks in hand. There’s a man in the spotlight, with what appears to be a marionette doll over his knee and another journalist, this one conspiratorially close on his other shoulder. As a chorus begins to sing, the strings move, revealing the crowd of press to be puppets, voices orchestrated toward one common belief: “Oh yes, they both reached for the gun.

The Grammys’ visual media field honors the best in music made for film, television and other formats. This year’s contenders range from blockbuster soundtracks to more under-the-radar but important material from critically beloved artists.
For Best Song for Visual Media, the race is full of plausible winners. Olivia Rodrigo could take home another Grammy this year here for “Can’t Catch Me Now,” the lead single from the “Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes” soundtrack. There’s precedent for Rodrigo, as Taylor Swift previously won here for a song from the same franchise, “Safe and Sound” from the original “Hunger Games”; both, however, were snubbed by the Oscars.
Speaking of Oscars, one Academy Award-nominated song that could be a contender here is “It Never Went Away” performed and co-written by Grammy favorite Jon Batiste for his documentary “American Symphony.” Batiste doesn’t always win at these awards,...

Below Deck alum, Kate Chastain has come in hot to share her thoughts on Below Deck Med Season 9.
As Monsters and Critics previously reported, Kate is participating in the Below Deck Med Season 9 After Show.
The first clips were released following the latest episode of the hit yachting show, and Kate did not disappoint.
Kate was brutally honest when discussing the drama going down between Bri Muller and Elena “Ellie” Dubaich.
The former chief stew addressed Bri’s laundry log or, as some think, burn book, which literally has us feeling nostalgic for Mean Girls.
In true Kate fashion she was witty, while also shady as she took a side and expressed her feelings to Chief Stew Aesha Scott.

It may be less than two weeks into its theatrical run, but it's fair to say that "Longlegs" is, without a doubt, the horror surprise of the year. The latest from director Oz Perkins was released by Neon in theaters on July 12 and, with two weekends under its belt at the box office, this buzzy genre flick only becomes more impressive by the moment. To that end, despite facing down heavy competition from "Twisters," which opened to $80.5 million, as well as holdovers like "Despicable Me 4" and "Inside Out 2," Perkins' twisted serial killer tale more than held its own on its second weekend.
"Longlegs" pulled in $11.7 million in its second frame, landing at number four on the charts. More importantly, this represents a mere 48% drop compared to the film's downright shocking opening weekend north of $22 million, which was, without exaggeration, one of the most impressive openings in recent memory.

Hollywood just keeps greenlighting follow-ups to comedies from the 2000s, including the recent Mean Girls musical remake, the upcoming Legally Blonde prequel series, and of course, The Bear, which is basically just a more stressful, pest-free Ratatouille.

Despite having Emmy-nominated shows like “The Morning Show,” “Ted Lasso,” and recent standout “Presumed Innocent,” and even some Oscars love for “Killers of the Flower Moon” and “Coda,” Apple TV+ still lags when it comes to getting viewers to stick around.
Nielsen’s recent The Gauge report, which tracks American viewership over multiple formats, had Apple TV+ with a share of less than 1 percent of all TV viewership, behind even platforms like Pluto TV, Tubi, Peacock, and Paramount+. So far, Apple’s strategy has been to almost exclusively build its own library. It didn’t go out and buy a studio like Amazon did with MGM, and it doesn’t generate new hits from other studios’ old shows and movies the way Netflix does. They’ve held firm on their strategy since launching in 2019.
All that may be changing. Bloomberg is reporting Apple is in talks with major Hollywood studios...

Back in 1968, George A. Romero made his feature directorial debut with one of the greatest horror movies ever made, Night of the Living Dead – and while doing so, he also introduced the world to flesh-eating ghouls that became a new definition for the world “zombie.” Romero, who passed away in 2017, went on to make several more zombie movies over the decades… and last month, his daughter Tina Romero revealed that she will be making her own feature directorial debut with a zombie movie called Queens of the Dead. Now Deadline is reporting that Katy O’Brian (Love Lies Bleeding), Brigette Lundy-Paine (Bill & Ted Face the Music), Margaret Cho (Fire Island), Cheyenne Jackson (American Horror Story), Nina West (Rupaul’s Drag Race), Jaquel Spivey (Mean Girls), Tomas Matos (Fire Island), Quincy Dunn-Baker (No Hard Feelings), Becca Blackwell (Bros), Shaunette Renée Wilson (Black Panther), Dominique Jackson (Pose), Riki Lindhome (Knives Out), and Eve Lindley...

When it comes to the golden age of horror films—hell, the golden age of films in general, I will die on the hill arguing that it is the late 1990s into the early 2000s. Sure, you might have incredibly valid reasons to argue against that, but this was a time of peak cinema when it comes to my personal media consumption. I consider it a source of pride that my strongest trivia category, were I to encounter it, would easily be Teen Movies of the late ‘90s into the early ‘00s. You see, I was at the perfect age for those movies to make an impact—a nerdy preteen with no siblings who was often glued to the TV. While everyone can easily recall gems like 10 Things I Hate About You, She’s All That, Bring it On, and Mean Girls, there are an equally large amount of teen...

Space Cadet, which stars Emma Roberts as Florida party girl Rex, who finds herself unexpectedly becoming an astronaut candidate, comes from director by Liz W. Garcia, who brings a refreshing spin to the beloved “fish out of water” trope,
infused with a female-centric narrative that reminded me very much of classics such as the 80s Goldie Hawn-led duo of Protocol and Private Benjamin – which itself inspired a similar “fish out of water” military comedy in 2002s Cadet Kelly; along with the likes of Miss Congeniality (2000) and Legally Blonde, released a year later in 2001.
Garcia’s film very much echoes Legally Blonde and Miss Congeniality thematically, both of which featured strong, independent women – played by Reese Witherspoon and Sandra Bullock respectively – who...

Coming later this month from Archie Comics is the one-shot Chilling Adventures Presents: Truth or Dare, billed as an homage to the late ’90s/early ’00s teen horror wave.
This brand new tale is part of Archie’s “Chilling Adventures Presents” anthology series, dedicated to standalone one-shots with the vibe of Creepshow and Tales from the Crypt.
In Truth or Dare, “When new student Trula Twyst comes to Riverdale, her mysterious and quiet nature doesn’t mix well with the squeaky-clean façade of Riverdale High. Tormented by her past and with a keen interest in Behavioral Psychology, she sets her sights on dismantling the traditional high school hierarchy from within. How? By a simple game of Truth or Dare.”
The Archie Comics team tells Bloody Disgusting this week, “This horror one shot is smart, sexy, and for fans of movies like Escape Room, Saw, and Girl, Interrupted.”

It’s the film that has made many a woman swoon, and solidified Rachel McAdams and Ryan Gosling as romantic leads. “The Notebook” made its national debut on June 25, 2004, and has become a favorite love story for many movie fans. On this 20th anniversary, let’s look back two decades to see how Nicholas Sparks‘ novel came to the big screen.
Sparks was inspired by the six-decade marriage of his wife’s grandparents, and wanted to write a book capturing a longtime romance. “The Notebook” is a tender story of young forbidden love, heartbreaking separation and passionate reunion, mostly set in 1940s South Carolina, as told by Noah to his beloved Allie, who has been robbed of her memories by Alzheimer’s disease. The best-selling novel was published in 1996, and the film rights were sold not long after, but it would be nearly a decade before the production came together,...

In a stunning reversal, David Ellison’s Skydance Media and Paramount Global controlling shareholder Shari Redstone have returned to the M&a altar.
The companies have reached terms on a revised merger agreement for Redstone’s National Amusements Inc. just three weeks after Redstone abruptly pulled out of a planned combination, multiple people familiar with the talks told Deadline. Nai controls almost 80% of voting shares in Paramount.
A special committee of Paramount’s board of directors, which was formed to evaluate strategic options for the troubled media company, is currently reviewing the updated deal terms, according to sources. The Wall Street Journal earlier Tuesday reported on the revived discussions.

Undoubtedly, Emma Stone is now one of the most demanded actresses in the industry, and we bet you have seen more than one of her films. These include Birdman (2014), La La Land (2016), The Favourite (2018) and, of course, last year’s banger Poor Things.
Few people know that Spider Man’s Gwen Stacy started her career as a comedy performer with small appearances in Superbad (2007) and Zombieland (2009). In 2010 the actress finally took the lead role in a must-see comedy that has just landed on Netflix.
Its plot revolves around Stone’s Olive, a high schooler who decides to spill the tea to her best friend by pretending she has lost her virginity. However, their conversation gets overheard by the school’s main busybody, and Olive becomes the target of slut-shaming.

There’s no telling when and how on-screen chemistry could end up morphing into reality. Just look at what The Notebook did to Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams. In classic enemies-to-lovers fashion, the pair went from wanting to strangle each other to falling head over heels in love.

After making a splash last fall with her debut album Snow Angel, Reneé Rapp has revealed that she’s back to work on a new album.
“Are you currently working on a new album?” actress Rachel Sennott asks Rapp in a new installment of Instagram’s Close Friends Only podcast. Rapp, who recently graced the big-screen in the musical adaptation of Mean Girls, confirms that she is in the studio working on new material and goes on to explain the inspiration.
“[Age] 23 to 24 has been a massive difference for me,” Rapp tells the actress, star of such films as Shiva Baby, Bottoms and I Used to Be Funny. “It’s also about, like, a reflection on my, like, 23rd year specifically.”
Sennott then jumps in to offer her experience on her early 20s as someone who is now 28. “23 is fucking crazy,” she says. “It was like the most insane year of my life.
