It is easy to forget that the National Servicemen are in the RAF.

In the first episode of the second series. The lads get an opportunity to fly on a plane.

Corporal Marsh notes just how lucky they are to fly, never mind be inside a plane.

The lads are very excited as they will be flying in a plane for the first time. Not Marsh when he finds out that he will be in the plane with them.

Marsh is afraid of flying and is a nervous wreck. The lads realise about his fear of flying and mock him.

Meanwhile earlier in the rifle range. Corporal Marsh had another scare when Matthew Lilley had a mishap with his rifle. He ended up pointing his loaded rifle to all and sundry until Marsh could calm him down.

The episode started with Marsh showing his more human side in the rifle range to ensure the safety of the lads.

A strong first episode to the second series with a guest appearance by George Baker and some location filming.

The second season of 'In' saw the return of producer/director Michael Mills ( Robert 'The Upchat Line' Reed stood in for him on the Christmas Special ).

The 'erks' ( particularly Jakey ) are thrilled to learn that their training will soon involve target practice ( and with live ammo ). Next up is what the lads have been waiting for - an aeroplane trip. Marsh does not plan on going. But then his orders are changed and he has to accompany 'C' Flight. The result is a nightmarish ordeal for the otherwise tough-as-nails Corporal...

Excellent start to the season, with the late George Baker putting in a guest appearance as 'Wing Commander Birch'. The braying laugh he uses here would be put to good use two decades later in the Penelope Keith sitcom 'No Job For A Lady'. Marsh's phobia about flying had been previously mentioned in the '36 Hour Pass' episode, and 'Flight Lieutenant Grant' ( David Quilter ) refers back to the nailing-down of Matthew Lilley.

Funniest moment - Marsh tricks Grant into thinking his cowardice was deliberate, to show the 'erks' how not to behave during a flight. Grant is taken in. But there is bad news for the Corporal; Grant wants him to go up in the air again! The lads get their own back by covering the floor of the barracks with little paper boats ( mocking Marsh's madness ).

Second funniest moment - on the target range, Matthew lags behind as he struggles to get comfortable on the ground. When he finally stands up, he is casually pointing the gun at Marsh, who then tells them to slowly turn around. Lilley does so, only to turn round 360 degrees. He winds up pointing the rifle at Marsh again!
