Pulp heroes shaped modern superheroes, with Flash Gordon, Doc Savage, and The Shadow leading the way through thrilling adventures. Filmmaking over the past 100 years has seen mixed results with pulp hero adaptations, from box office flops to hidden gems waiting to be discovered. From Tarzan to Zorro to Buck Rogers, iconic pulp heroes like Conan the Barbarian and The Rocketeer brought thrilling adventures to the big screen.
While the pulp heroes of the past may not be as recognizable as the most popular superheroes of today, they still have plenty of great movie adaptations that viewers should be sure to check out. From masked vigilantes to over-the-top musclemen, pulp heroes acted as the forerunners to modern-day superheroes and originated through inexpensive fiction magazines that provided readers with disposable adventures and peaked in popularity between the 1920s and 1940s. Although the comics industry has become the home of superheroes like Batman and Spider-Man, the earliest comics were dominated by pulp fiction. Known for cheap paper and emphasis on action and adventure, comics like Doc Savage, Zorro, and the Lone Ranger captivated young readers throughout the 1930s. Despite the drop-off pulp experienced as time passed, Hollywood has attempted to revive many of these heroes in the last decade. Unfortunately, it didn't work out.

After eight years, Gore Verbinski’s back with a thriller called Good Luck, Have Fun, Don’t Die. And it now has a cast, with Sam Rockwell, Michael Peña and Zazie Beetz among the large names.
It’s almost exactly eight years since director Gore Verbinski released a film – that being the 2016 horror, A Cure For Wellness. Now, though, the Pirates Of The Caribbean filmmaker appears to have gotten a new project together, with Deadline reporting that a cast has been announced for a genre mash-up called Good Luck, Have Fun, Don’t Die.
Among the major names you’ll find Sam Rockwell (most recently seen in Argylle), Haley Lu Richardson, Juno Temple, Zazie Beetz and Michael Peña.
According to Deadline’s plot summary, the film’s about a “man from the future” – who’ll be played by Rockwell – whose mission is to assemble a group of “disgruntled patrons” (played...

After directing the first three “Pirates of the Caribbean” films (2003–2007) and the animated movie “Rango” (2011), which won the Academy Award and BAFTA for Best Animated Film, things have been relatively quiet for director Gore Verbinski. “The Lone Ranger” was an expensive disappointment at the box office, and the back-to-basic “A Cure for Wellness” was well-respected but kind of came and went.

Believe it or not, but it’s been nearly eight years since the release of Gore Verbinski’s last movie — the underrated A Cure for Wellness — but the director finally has a new project in the works. Deadline reports that Verbinski has assembled a fantastic ensemble of actors for his action-adventure movie titled Good Luck, Have Fun, Don’t Die.
Sam Rockwell, one of my all-time favourite actors, will be leading the cast, which includes Haley Lu Richardson (The White Lotus), Juno Temple (Fargo), Michael Peña (Ant-Man and the Wasp), and Zazie Beetz (Joker). Rockwell will star as a “man from the future” who arrives at a Los Angeles diner to recruit a “precise combination of disgruntled patrons to join him on a one-night-six-block quest to save the world from the terminal threat of a rogue artificial intelligence.“

As far as conspiracy theories go, very few have had as much of a life as the notion that NASA faked the Apollo moon landing. In some ways, one can understand why people felt this way, as it was one of the most critical events in human history, and the only witness was a TV camera. Back then, people distrusted anything they couldn’t see with their own eyes. In the seventies, conspiracy theories started to get famous, especially as far as the government went, with this the era of Watergate. People no longer trusted authority, and into this fraught environment came Capricorn One, a sci-fi-tinged conspiracy thriller that was one of the most popular films of 1977 but has since been largely forgotten – save for a small cult of devoted fans.

Since the dawn of Hollywood, the Western genre has been a vibrant and versatile source of entertainment for audiences around the world. Known for their great use of scenery, character development, and old-fashioned gun battles, these movies also house some of the best villains of cinema. Ranging from ruthless outlaws to scheming, greedy industrialists, the Old West has no shortage of great foes.
Western villains often stand out for their corruption and brutality, something required to fit the harsh conditions of the American Frontier. Making names for themselves looting gold, murdering innocent people, and terrorizing towns, these bad guys often earn a reputation as the worst characters around. The genre is a great setting for true justice — and it typically comes swiftly to these loathsome outlaws.

Walt Disney Studios has had a pretty abysmal year at the international box office in 2023. Between Ant-Man: Quantumania, The Little Mermaid, Elemental, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, and perhaps most disappointing, The Marvels, the typically successful movie studio has lost an ungodly amount of money by producing overly expensive feature films that failed to resonate among the masses and earn back their financial investments. If the studio isn’t careful and the trend continues, Disney could break another record for the all-time biggest box-office bomb on record.
Speaking of which, what would your answer be if you had to guess Disney’s most notorious financial flop of all time? Well, up until recently, the correct response would have been John Carter, the disastrous 2012 adaptation of Edgar Rice Boroughs’ A Princes of Mars. However, after tallying up the receipts in 2023, Disney’s most infamous box office failure now belongs to The Lone Ranger,...

The Western genre has been around since the Golden Age of Hollywood, with many actors starting their prolific careers within the film industry in this genre. For example, stars like John Wayne, Clint Eastwood, and Sam Elliott have proven themselves especially suited to the genre. In 1993, after a lull in Westerns, Tombstone helped revitalize the genre, thanks to some career-best performances from Kurt Russell and Val Kilmer.
While many fans cite Clint Eastwood's heyday as the genre's zenith, Hollywood has produced some of the greatest Westerns more recently. Although Tombstone very much became the benchmark for the modern Western movie, there's no shortage of solid competition in the years since. Everything from adaptations of classic stories to new, fresh takes on the genre has made for some brilliant stories.

We have some very sad news to close out 2023, folks. Tom Wilkinson, one of the finest and most beloved character actors of this (or any other) generation, has died suddenly at 75. Deadline was the first to report the news. The twice Oscar-nominated co-star of Michael Clayton, Batman Begins, In the Bedroom, and many more films last appeared in Disney Plus’s sequel series to his breakout role in The Full Monty.
Between 1998 and 2018, Wilkinson was one of his generation’s most prolific character actors, with his output putting him up there with Brian Cox and Brendan Gleeson. He made over 65 movies and TV series in that twenty-year period, starring in everything from high-profile arthouse fare like Todd Field’s In the Bedroom to his role as Carmine Falcone in Batman Begins. He often played villains, such as in The Lone Ranger, but had the range to take on pretty much any part.

There are several popular social media accounts that graph weekly cable network schedules, and it’s always stunning to see how many schedulers have just given up. Nearly every cable network, large and small, now mostly program marathons of their most popular shows.
You know about “Ridiculousness” on MTV, of course. But did you know how much time Disney Channel runs “Big City Greens,” Nick Jr. airs “Paw Patrol,” Adult Swim telecasts “Bob’s Burgers” and “American Dad,” and Nick at Nite runs “Friends”? A lot.
As basic cable gets zombified, the double-digit declines continue. Live sports, of course, is saving the broadcast networks and some cable networks still in that game. And then there’s the interesting case of the diginets, which have managed to keep their declines small as they program a wider range of nostalgia fare to aging adults. And the networks with a very loyal, specialized audience — bravo,...

Few Western characters are as famous as the original Lone Ranger. Played primarily by Clayton Moore, the Lone Ranger and his partner Tonto traveled across the American Old West to bring in the criminals that the law couldn't seem to catch. The best-known version of Tonto comes from The Lone Ranger television series that debuted in 1949. This sidekick was played by none other than Jay Silverheels, a Mohawk-Seneca actor who would become one of the most prolific (albeit uncredited) faces in the Western genre. Even if you haven't seen a single episode of The Lone Ranger, you've probably seen Silverheels before, even if you didn't know it. As far as the ultimate Western sidekicks go, look no further than the original Tonto himself.

Axelrod showed up in Woody Allen’s Bananas (1971) in one of his first onscreen roles, and his big-screen résumé also included Hancock (2008), Winged Creatures (2008), Little Fockers (2010), Super 8 (2011), J. Edgar (2011) and The Lone Ranger (2013).
Axelrod portrayed mobster Victor Jerome on the ABC soap General Hospital from 1987-89 and the “Electrolarynx Guy” on the NBC comedy My Name Is Earl in 2005-08.
And on the ABC drama Grey’s Anatomy in 2006-07, he stole scenes as the patient Charlie Yost, who spent a long time in a semi-conscious state at Seattle Grace before dying — just as he was about to get in a wheelchair to leave.

The Western genre has, since the dawn of American cinema, provided some of the greatest stories the film industry has ever told. With many of these movies being based on novels and other media, the genre often combines themes of old-school justice, retribution, the morality of its era, and adventure. When combined, it makes for one of the most versatile genres there is, and has formed the subtle basis for some of the most successful projects in Hollywood today.
Westerns continue to captivate audiences, both through the modernized neo-western and classic, Old West tales. The 2010s had an especially strong showing for the genre as a combination of experimental westerns, remakes of classics, and genre-bending stories were created. The genre's strength shows no sign of abating, and many of the best entries were made in the last decade.

Cinema has produced a range of powerful stories throughout Hollywood's century-long existence that have captivated audiences around the world. Having raked in hundreds of billions of dollars across the decades, the industry has no shortage of iconic stories and smashing box office successes. However, the film industry also has a long line of flops, some of which saw great ideas go down in flames.
A box office flop doesn't always mean the story is bad, but can suggest other problems, such as format, structure, or pacing. For others, exorbitant budgets can make it almost impossible for a studio to make their money back, which can even lead to an entire world of IP being written off by the industry. Some of these movies were fighting an uphill battle at the box office from the word go, and opting for something simpler for TV could have redeemed them — while sparing their studios a loss.

As Indigenous woman filmmakers, we knew that our path through the industry would be narrow and that our film, Fancy Dance, would have a small window for success based on the abysmal record of representation for Indigenous folx in Hollywood. As such, we channeled our collective wills as granddaughters of Dust Bowl survivors, descendants of genocide and avowed followers of the indomitable Merata Mita to give this film the best shot possible.

Johnny Depp's next project, Modì, is not his directorial debut, but rather his second film as a director after the poorly received The Brave. Modì will tell the story of Italian artist Amedeo Modigliani and focus on two chaotic days in his life while he was in Paris and on the run from the police. The Brave faced controversy not only for its negative reviews but also due to behind-the-scenes tragedies and Depp casting himself as an indigenous person, similar to his later role in The Lone Ranger.
Johnny Depp is set to direct the biographical drama Modì, but contrary to popular belief, Modì isn’t Depp’s directorial debut, but his first movie is pretty difficult to find. For his next project, Johnny Depp is leaving acting behind and focusing only on directing and producing the movie titled Modì, based on the play Modigliani by Dennis McIntyre.

William Shatner. Leonard Nimoy. Nichelle Nichols. These names belong to some of the most influential actors in television history, but they are almost interchangeable with the names James T. Kirk, Mr. Spock, and Uhura. For better or for worse, these names and faces are inextricably tied to the characters they played.
That said, anyone who only knows the cast of Star Trek’s original series as the command crew of the USS Enterprise is missing out on some pretty fantastic acting work elsewhere. Every member of the cast had credits before the first season in 1966, and they all went on to other projects after the show’s cancelation in 1969, even as they reconvened for the feature films. If you don’t want to sift through hours of Westerns and police procedurals, here is a cheat sheet to the best non-Trek performances from the stars of The Original Series.

The Pirates of the Caribbean series has been one of the most successful movie franchises of the 21st century so far. With five feature films released between 2003 and 2017, the franchise has grossed an incredible $4.5 billion at the global box office, and it has also translated that success into massive merchandising and additional media sales as well. These movies connected with audiences in a way that most other series can only dream of. However, since the release of the fifth film, Dead Men Tell No Tales, in 2017, the franchise has been largely dormant.
Just because we haven’t seen any new Pirates of the Caribbean films doesn’t mean that the series isn’t a priority for Disney, though. There have been a handful of different Pirates projects that have entered development over the last few years. These projects have ranged from a sixth film that would continue to follow Johnny Depp...

Twilight was released on November 21, 2008, and even with how popular the book series was, no one expected the craze that it would bring to the film industry and fandom culture. The film kicked off not only one of the biggest franchises in movie history but also took a cast of relatively unknown actors and made them some of the biggest stars in the world.
Update November 9, 2023: With Twilight's 15th anniversary approaching, this article has been updated with the actor's most recent projects.

It still somehow feels new, as the franchise saw a resurgence in 2021 when it arrived on Netflix, and an entirely new generation who missed the film phenomenon discovered it for the first time. While some may snark at it, Twilight has remained a classic for many people that they look back fondly on. With...

In the ever-expanding universe of Taylor Sheridan’s Western sagas, Lawmen: Bass Reeves stands out with its riveting historical perspective. David Oyelowo brings the formidable Bass Reeves to life, promising a series that intertwines Sheridan’s rugged storytelling with a nuanced exploration of a real-life hero’s journey.
Straddling the line between myth and history, Lawmen: Bass Reeves aims to dissect the legendary figure of the Old West with a poignant authenticity. It’s a show that not only expands Sheridan’s already impressive body of Western narratives but also deepens the cultural conversation.

Is it any wonder that Bass Reeves was the inspiration for The Lone Ranger?
We meet Bass in the middle of an ongoing battle Civil War, where he’s fighting side-by-side with his “owner,” Confederate Army Commander George Reeves.
Bass promises George he will follow him into battle and fire when necessary, and he does just that, shooting with laser-sharp precision, never missing his mark.
Like all wars, it’s a disgusting scene, and this one culminates in white men masquerading as Native Americans, scalping their opponents after their victory.
On Lawmen: Bass Reeves Season 1 Episode 1, we learn quickly that the brightest, most well-adjusted man in any room is Bass himself. Despite his circumstances, he’s a moral man who is fearless in the face of moral ambiguity or outright absence.

Paramount+’s Lawmen: Bass Reeves episode one introduces David Oyelowo as the legendary lawman whose life was dedicated to protecting the peace in the Old West. Reeves was credited with arresting over 3,000 criminals while serving as a Deputy U.S. Marshal, and it’s not a stretch to believe he might have been one of the inspirations for The Lone Ranger.
Lawmen: Bass Reeves was created and written by Chad Feehan, based on the books Follow the Angels, Follow the Doves: The Bass Reeves Trilogy, Book One and Hell on the Border: The Bass Reeves Trilogy, Book Two by Sidney Thompson. Episode one focuses on the last days of Bass Reeves’ enslavement and the time he spent with the Seminoles, with David Oyelowo delivering a powerful performance as the runaway slave turned gunslinging lawman.

Judy Nugent, the former ’50s child actor who co-starred with Jane Wyman in Magnificent Obsession, Annette Funicello in the popular Annette serial on ABC’s The Mickey Mouse Club and flew in the arms of George Reeves’ Superman in a 1954 episode of The Adventures of Superman, died of October 26 cancer, surrounded by family at her ranch in Montana. She was 83.
Her death was announced in a family statement released by daughter-in-law Anne Lockhart, the Chicago Fire actor and daughter of Lost in Space star June Lockhart.
A Los Angeles native – she was the daughter of MGM prop man Carl Nugent – Nugent had already appeared in a handful of uncredited roles, including in the 1951 film Angels in the Outfield, when she landed her breakthrough role as Donna Ruggles in the 1949-52 TV series The Ruggles, an early family sitcom starring comic actor Charles Ruggles (Bringing Up Baby). Lawmen: Bass Reeves is not a spinoff of 1883, but it had the chance to be. The Paramount+ anthology series, premiering Sunday, November 5, stars David Oyelowo as the legendary Bass Reeves, the first Black deputy marshal in the United States who’s said to have inspired The Lone Ranger. The eight-episode season is set from “roughly 1862 to 1877,” creator, executive producer, and showrunner Chad Feehan tells TV Insider. Feehan was “given the opportunity” to connect Bass Reeves to Taylor Sheridan‘s Yellowstone universe but chose not to. Here, Feehan explains why. Viewers will see lots of similarities between Bass Reeves and Sheridan’s hit western shows. In addition to having Sheridan as an executive producer, the Bass Reeves title sequence looks a lot like 1883 and 1923‘s and they have Yellowstone actor Mo Brings Plenty in the cast and as a cultural consultant (he ...

Phyllis Coates, the first actress to play Daily Planet reporter Lois Lane on television, only to leave the Adventures of Superman after just one season, has died. She was 96.
Coates, who also appeared in Republic Pictures serials and in such films as I Was a Teenage Frankenstein, died Wednesday of natural causes at the Motion Picture & Television Country House and Hospital in Woodland Hills, her daughter Laura Press told The Hollywood Reporter.

Johnny Depp provides a unique and subdued performance as Victor, the nervous and kind-hearted protagonist of Corpse Bride. Helena Bonham Carter brings depth and complexity to the character of Emily, the tragic corpse bride who falls in love with Victor. Emily Watson gives Victoria, Victor's wife-to-be, a quiet strength and determination as she navigates the chaos caused by Victor's accidental marriage to Emily.
Tim Burton has been the mastermind behind some truly incredible movies, and Corpse Bride is just one of a wide array of classic Halloween films, but who else was involved in bringing this haunting story to life? Although Corpse Bride is stop-motion, therefore the cast are all voice actors, that does not diminish their importance to the film at all. In fact, the level of the movie's spookiness would not be nearly the same without these performers and their voices, which bring both dialogue and music to eerie perfection.
