The tale of “Jack Ryan” has come to an end. For now, at least.
With the launch of “Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan” Season 4, John Krasinski’s time as an espionage hero is over, but he goes out with a bang in the six-episode final season. Krasinski and Co. shot the final season back-to-back with Season 3 of the globe-trotting series, knocking out the international shoot in one big go.
For his final adventure, Jack Ryan roots out corruption within the CIA, but as he starts digging he finds an even darker secret. His final mission puts him in contact with Michael Peña’s Ding Chavez and reunites him with familiar faces like Jim Greer (Wendell Pierce) and Mike November (Michael Kelly) – and one shocking return as well.
But in contrast to previous seasons that dropped all their episodes at once, “Jack Ryan” Season 4 is getting a weekly rollout – with a twist.

On paper, Rodney Crowell and Jeff Tweedy seem like an almost too-perfect pairing. Crowell once positioned himself as an alternative to the Nashville machine but, over the last 50 years, has become one of the town’s most accomplished and revered songwriters, while Tweedy is the consummate music nerd with a predilection for outsiders and a longstanding reverence for the classic country-rock of the 1960s and ’70s. Both share instincts for emotionally earnest lyrics and expanding the sonic terrain of traditional folk and blues.
On The Chicago Sessions, named after the Wilco Loft in the Windy City where the album was produced by Tweedy, Crowell’s delight and comfort in working with a kindred spirit is readily apparent. His recent efforts, including 2017’s Close Ties and 2021’s Triage, trend darker than his earlier work, showcasing the deepening crags of his weathered voice on songs about mortality and societal ills. An epic love story will not be taking flight at ABC.
The network has officially scrapped its fairytale drama from Once Upon a Time creators Adam Horowitz and Eddy Kitsis.
The cast of the potential series was set to be led by Brittany O’Grady (Little Voice), who played cynical princess Luna, and Eleanor Fanyinka (Holby City), who played a mysterious character known as The Seer.
Modern Family's Sarah Hyland was also set to appear in the project as a princess named Rose.
O'Grady was set to be the lead as Luna, with it being revealed that the character is changed by a broken heart.
She does not believe in love stories, but “she is about to find herself caught in the most epic one of all — her own.”
Epic was described as “a romantic anthology series set in the fairytale universe of Disney… taking place in a Disney-like Enchanted Forest.

ABC has made decisions on three of its five outstanding drama pilots, passing on Triage, Dark Horse and the Kevin Costner-executive produced National Parks Investigation. Meanwhile, Epic and Promised Land, whose final cuts are still being locked in, remain in consideration for midseason. They come from ABC Signature, has options on the casts until September I hear.
Dark Horse, which was not produced, and National Parks Investigation will be shopped by their lead studios, Universal Television and A+E Studios, respectively. Triage, from 20th Century TV, also may be shopped.
Second-cycle medical drama pilot Triage had a rollercoaster ride. The project, told in three different time frames, did not fare well with the first cut, did significantly better with the second cut, which had promising testing results, then cooled off during screenings but had enough of a momentum to be kept in contention back in May.

It’s been a busy day at ABC.
The network has handed series pickups to pilots The Wonder Years, Queens, Maggie and Abbott Elementary and passed on pilots including Sam Esmail’s Acts of Crime and comedies Black Don’t Crack and Bucktown.
But there are five pilots that are still in consideration for the 2021-22 broadcast season, including Kevin Costner’s National Parks Investigation, that will be considered for midseason.
These also include Dark Horse, Epic, Promised Land and Triage.
Dark Hose, Epic and Promised Land have yet to be filmed and will be considered after the upfronts, while the off-cycle Triage pilot was produced and went through a rollercoaster ride of a poorly received first cut, highly testing second cut and so-so screening response. National Parks Investigation was considered a wildcard for fall consideration but a final, broadcast-length cut of the pilot, was not delivered in time.

As we head into the first broadcast upfront presentations on Monday, the two networks that are going up first, NBC and Fox, have made the decisions on their outstanding pilots. This leaves ABC and CBS, which also are presenting next week, as well as the CW, which has some leeway as it is not unveiling its fall 2021 schedule until the week after. Things have never been murkier so close to showtime but here is what I have heard since publishing the initial 2021 Pilot Buzz last week.
No major changes at the front of the ABC echelon, with The Wonder Years reboot, from Saladin Patterson, the original series’ Fred Savage and Lee Daniels, and drama Queens, headlined by Brandy, Eve, Naturi Naughton, Nadine Velazquez and Pepi Sonuga, staying hot through the screenings and still looking good.
Comedy pilot Maggie lived up to the “dark horse” moniker I gave it in the original handicap.

A fairytale drama of epic proportions is brewing at ABC.
Brittany O'Grady has landed the lead role of Luna in the network's pilot, Epic, which comes from Adam Horowitz and Eddy Kitsis (Once Upon a Time).
Deadline first reported the news, revealing that Luna is a princess changed by a broken heart.
She does not believe in love stories, but “she is about to find herself caught in the most epic one of all — her own.”
It's an intriguing hook, but we should make one thing clear:
This is not a Once Upon a Time spinoff. It's a standalone series that will put a new spin on classic Disney fairytales.
The cast also includes Eleanor Fanyinka, who is set to play a character named The Seer.
Epic is described as “a romantic anthology series set in the fairytale universe of Disney… taking place in a Disney-like Enchanted Forest.”

The news was announced by Fred Savage, the lead of the original 1988-93 TV series.

ABC has handed a pilot order to National Parks, a drama written by Yellowstone star Kevin Costner, The Flash’s Aaron Helbing and author Jon Baird.
The one-hour drama comes from Costner’s Territory Pictures Entertainment, along with 20th Television and A+E Studios.
It marks the latest drama pilot order from the Disney-owned network for one of last year’s projects that was rolled into second-cycle development following a similar move for medical drama Triage. Last week, the network also handed out pilot orders for Queens, a drama about a ’90s hip hop group from Zahir McGhee, and Epic, from the team behind Once Upon A Time.

ABC has ordered two drama series to pilot in some of its first pilot pickups of the 2021 pilot season.
The broadcaster has given out pilot orders to the one-hour shows “Queens” and “Epic.” Both will be produced by ABC Signature. They join the previously announced ABC drama pilot “Acts of Crime,” which hails from Sam Esmail.
“Queens” is written and executive produced by Zahir McGhee and executive produced by Sabrina Wind. In the show, four estranged and out-of-touch women in their 40s reunite for a chance to recapture their fame and regain the swagger they had as the Nasty Bitches – their ’90s group that made them legends in the hip-hop world.
“Epic” hails from writer and executive producer Brigitte Hales and executive producers Adam Horowitz and Edward Kitsis. Horowitz and Kitsis previously created the ABC series “Once Upon a Time,” with Hales having served as a writer on that show.

It is January, which marks the start of the broadcast pilot season when networks begin to pick up their crop of pilots for next season. Not this year. In January 2021, most broadcast networks are still getting ready to film some of their 2020 pilots and the country is going through a deadly Covid-19 surge, with California as the epicenter.
The coronavirus pandemic blew up the 2020 pilot season by grounding almost all pilots just as they were heading into production. The shakeup led to nets embracing straight-to-series orders in a bigger way, relying on extra backup scripts to make their decisions. Fox, which already had started a transition to year-round development, over the summer adjusted its approach to development and will be commissioning a mix of traditional pilots, lower-cost presentations, writers rooms as well as outright straight-to-series orders going forward. ABC also has stepped up its plans to move development to off-cycle...

On-location film permits for the Los Angeles area slowed by 7.6% from October to November as production activity eased amid the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, the FilmLA agency reported Tuesday.
The industry, which was mostly shuttered from March to June, has received approximately 3,552 film permit applications spanning 2,514 unique projects over the past 20 weeks for location shooting in the Los Angeles area. For the first time since production resumed, month-over-month permit volume decreased in November as application intake declined to 813 permits from 880 in October.
The agency said the slowing stemmed from the 2020 election, the Thanksgiving holiday and the pandemic. FilmLA’s daily intake is now averaging around 39 new applications per business day.
“The November decrease in production reflects the ongoing complexity of the moment,” said FilmLA President Paul Audley. “At this point, progress for production rests, like so many things, on effective community control of Covid-19. The Greater Los Angeles filmmaking community, so...

Despite the pandemic, some 40 feature films began shooting on-location in Greater Los Angeles last month, and 27 unique TV show titles either resumed or started on-location filming in town, pulling their first permits since June.
Overall, however, on-location production of films, TV shows and commercials was down in November compared with October, according FilmLA, the City and County’s film permit office. It’s the first time since production resumed that month-over-month permit volume has decreased.
“The November decrease in production reflects the ongoing complexity of the moment,” said FilmLA president Paul Audley. “At this point, progress for production rests, like so many things, on effective community control of Covid-19. ABC Scraps ‘Thirtysomething’ Sequel Pilot, Vampire Drama ‘The Brides’ as Remaining Slate Takes Shape
ABC has made a range of decisions on its remaining pilots this season, which were all shutdown due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Firstly, the network is scrapping its pilots for the dramas “The Brides” and “Thirtysomething(else)” and the comedy “Valley Trash.” The news is surprising for “The Brides” — a female-led vampire soap opera with “Riverdale’s” Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa writing — and “Thirtysometing(else) — a sequel series to the classic dramedy “Thirtysomething” with the original creators and multiple original cast members returnin. Both shows were pegged as early frontrunners for series pickups prior to the pandemic. According to sources, both shows were on the pricier side to produce, which may have contributed to ABC cutting them loose.
Elsewhere on the slate, ABC will be picking up actor options with intent to shoot the following pilots once production can safely begin: drama “Rebel” starring Katey Sagal and based on the life of Erin Brockovich; “Harlem’s Kitchen,...

TheWrap has also learned that three pilots are not moving forward, including “Riverdale” creator Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa’s sexy Dracula pilot “The Brides” and the “Thirtysomething” sequel series featuring the original cast. The Jason Lee-led comedy “Valley Trash” is also being scrapped.

ABC has handed a late pilot order to Kids Matter Now, a multi-camera comedy from Better with You creator Shana Goldberg-Meehan, CBS Television Studios and 20th Century Fox TV.
Written and executive produced by Goldberg-Meehan and to be directed by Christine Gernon (Speechless), Kids Matter Now centers on a diva boss with no patience for working parents who adopts a baby and has a change of heart, casting her mother-of-three assistant as an unlikely mentor and upending the office dynamics.
The pilot order for Kids Matter Now is for the regular pilot season despite coming after ABC recently gave a second-cycle pilot order to drama Triage.
ABC delayed pilot order confirmations for several comedies this season as it employed a different strategy. Four comedy scripts quietly received informal cast-contingent orders by the network early on. The other three — Home Economics, Untitled Emily Kapnek/Dean Holland (aka Wild Child) and Valley Trash...

Gina Torres is returning to the small screen for her next TV role, and it may be one of her best yet.
The Suits alum has been attached to lead the cast of ABC's soapy drama The Brides.
Torres is on board as Cleo Phillips, the leader of the three brides, who some would call a queen.
Cleo was actually a queen in her former life after being turned by Dracula following the untimely death of her husband.
However, times change, and when the series picks up, Cleo will be a successful New York City real estate tycoon who finds herself challenged professionally by a newcomer who upends her life.
There will be tense family drama thanks to the other two brides, but the series is a "sexy contemporary reimagining" of the Dracula story.
It's certainly a unique concept, and ABC will probably be the best home for it when...

Criminal Minds showrunner Erica Messer and Crazy Rich Asians director Jon M. Chu are teaming on a medical drama at ABC.
The duo will executive produce Triage, which has landed a pilot order at the network. Colin Farrell has set Irish crime drama “The Ruin” as the first production for his new production banner Chapel Place Productions. The project will re-team Farrell with his “The Lobster” producer Lee Magiday.
The newly formed Chapel Place was set up by Farrell with his sister and manager Claudine Farrell. The pair will team with Magiday’s, also newly founded, Sleeper Films as well as Australia’s Hopscotch Features for the feature adaptation. Troy Lum and Andrew Mason will produce for Hopscotch.
Written by Dervla McTiernan, ‘The Ruin’ tells the story of police officer Cormac Reilly who discovers two neglected children in a crumbling house in Galway, their mother dead upstairs from an overdose. Twenty years later, when another body is found, Reilly is drawn back to the cold case that has haunted his career, uncovering shocking secrets about police corruption and abuses of the church, and questioning who among his colleagues he can trust.
