Chico is a young piano player with big dreams. Rita is a beautiful singer with an extraordinary voice. Music and romantic desire unites them, but their journey - in the tradition of the Latin ballad, the bolero - brings heartache and torment.
Fernando Trueba and Javier Mariscal's collaboration dates back 10 years when Trueba asked the designer Mariscal to create a poster for his Latin jazz documentary Calle 54 (2000). The two would go on to work together frequently, even to the point of co-owning a jazz restaurant in Madrid.
Have you thought about your career? About your future?
Rita: Future, what future? The future never gave me anything! All my hopes are set on the past.
The kitchen in which Chico and Rita eat kidney-bean soup is in the United States. However, a European-style electrical outlet can be seen clearly on one of the walls.
