Chico is a young piano player with big dreams. Rita is a beautiful singer with an extraordinary voice. Music and romantic desire unites them, but their journey - in the tradition of the Latin ballad, the bolero - brings heartache and torment.
Fernando Trueba and Javier Mariscal's collaboration dates back 10 years when Trueba asked the designer Mariscal to create a poster for his Latin jazz documentary Calle 54 (2000). The two would go on to work together frequently, even to the point of co-owning a jazz restaurant in Madrid.
