Two completely different movies just spurred a huge streaming weekend for Paramount+.
The first thing to know: “Transformers: Rise of the Beasts” was the most-streamed movie in the U.S. last weekend, according to Whip Media’s weekly movie ranker. Whip Media’s ranker is based on viewership data from TV Time, its TV and movie tracking app with more than 26 million global registered users.
“Beasts” took the top spot immediately after making its Paramount+ debut on July 25. But its streaming success wasn’t necessarily a sure thing.
The new “Transformers” movie, directed by Steven Caple Jr. and starring Anthony Ramos and Dominique Fishback, pulled in about $430 million at the box office. That’s a lot of money, to be sure, but it’s also the smallest amount made out of any of the franchise’s seven installments. Its finish atop Whip Media’s ranker marked the first time since...

After The Flash’s disastrous opening last weekend, the big question this week is: what type of tumble will it take? Recent Dceu entries such as Shazam! Fury of the Gods and Black Adam saw substantial declines in their second weekend (69% and 59% respectively). With the front loaded nature of super hero movies, and the general public saying no thank you to Ezra Miller’s presence on the big screen, I think this one will have a second weekend drop more in line with Shazam! and finish the weekend around the $17 million mark.
If there is one film that could potentially take over the top spot this weekend it would be Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse in its fourth weekend as that film has remained neck and neck with Flash throughout the week and has seen relatively small drops week to week. I give the edge to Flash as it is only the second weekend,...

Brooklyn, New York – June 05: Ron Perlman attends the US Premiere of Paramount Pictures’ “Transformers: Rise of the Beasts” at Kings Theatre on June 05, 2023, in Brooklyn, New York. (Photo by Bryan Bedder/Getty Images for Paramount Pictures) Transformers: Rise of the Beasts marks the seventh film in the franchise, which dates back to 2007. Of course, with each new film, new characters have been introduced, bringing new actors into the series. It’s ironic that Ron Perlman is joining for Rise of the Beasts — after all, one of his most-loved roles was in the TV series Beauty and the Beast. And in the new Transformers movie, he’s giving his voice to an actual beast: a bot that can transform into a gorilla. Irony aside, Perlman says he’s ecstatic to have been asked to participate in a franchise that has so many fans all over the world. (Click on the...

Transformers: Rise of the Beasts triggers a frisson not uncommon to happily mindless franchise movies. It exudes the energy of talented filmmakers trying to wring something creative, unique, or, heaven forbid, human, from a generic template, or trying to sneak just a little bit of flavor into the boxed mix. This palpable effort makes Beasts watchable on a moment-to-moment basis. It has talented actors, Dominique Fishback and Anthony Ramos, doing their best to interact with green-screen concoctions. It has a sense of humor. It has a Nineties hip-hop soundtrack put...

Summer’s tentpole rumble continues this weekend with Paramount’s seventh Transformers movie, Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, which is heat-seeking $155 million at the worldwide box office for its opening frame, $100M of that offshore.
The movie reps a concentrated reboot by the studio of the long-in-tooth robots-in-disguise franchise, which has suffered in latter installments from declining ticket sales. This is the second Transformers movie not directed by Michael Bay after 2018’s Bumblebee (though Bay still produces), and looks to distinguish itself from the fray with its introduction of the robotic animals from the Hasbro franchise. Creed II director Steven Caple Jr. is at the helm and the movie stars In the Heights’ Anthony Ramos and The Deuce and Judas and the Black Messiah’s Dominique Fishback. The pic cost a net $195M co-financed by Skydance.

Part three of the Harry Potter prequel series had better have some good tricks up its sleeve or the future of this tarnished franchise will be in doubt
The news this week that the latest instalment in the Fantastic Beasts saga will be titled The Secrets of Dumbledore has been met with a chorus of meh across the geekosphere. The general consensus seems to be that after 2018’s misfiring sequel, The Crimes of Grindelwald, these magical mysteries better be up there with the recipe for KFC if Warner Bros want fans to tune back in for part three.
It’s a pity, because Jk Rowling’s venture into fantasy screenwriting promised so much. Freed from the structures of her Harry Potter novels, with their Malory Towers on magical Kool-Aid veneer, she wrote an opener, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, that offered an enticing vision of the wizarding world’s recent history.

“Beasts of No Nation” marked a historic moment for Netflix as the streaming giant’s first original narrative film production. The film launched in competition at the 2015 Venice Film Festival and then opened October 16, 2015 day-and-date in theaters and on Netflix. Many industry figures wondered if “Beasts” would bring Netflix into the Oscar race for the first time, but the Academy shut the film out despite Idris Elba’s SAG Award win for Best Supporting Actor (he was also nominated at the Golden Globes and the BAFTAs) and the film’s SAG nominee for outstanding cast. Elba recently told THR that awards bodies wouldn’t ignore the film had it been released in 2021.
“I think the reception from an audience perspective would be very similar [if it was released today],” Elba said. “But considering the social climate now, ‘Beasts of No Nation’ would certainly make a real impact in terms of awards and accolades, and not...

The fall festival season took off with a rash of big awards titles at Venice, which opened Wednesday with rapturous reviews for Pedro Almodovar’s “Parallel Mothers” (which will also close the New York Film Festival), and Telluride, which launched on Thursday with a mix of Cannes hits and world premieres.
While Venice went forward with a live festival last year, Telluride 2020 was shut down by the pandemic, and fest director Julie Huntsinger said at Thursday’s opening day press conference that putting on this year’s festival was “a miracle,” as many stars and filmmakers, including Will Smith and Joaquin Phoenix — the stars of the Thursday night world premieres “King Richard” and “C’mon, C’mon,” respectively — were unable to attend due to constantly changing local Covid restrictions.
Venice day two brought more raves for Jane Campion’s “The Power of the Dog” (Netflix); the director, Kirsten Dunst, and...
